1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.
1 Now there was (A)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines.
1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
1 There was another famine in the land in addition to the one that had occurred in Abraham’s time.(A) And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.(B)
1 Later on, a famine swept through the land. This famine was different from the previous famine that had occurred earlier, during Abraham's lifetime. So Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.
2 The LORD appeared to him, and said, "Do not go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about.
2 The Lord (C)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; (a)(D)stay in the land of which I shall tell you.
2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
2 The Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land that I tell you about;
2 That's when the LORD appeared to Isaac. "You are not to go down to Egypt," he said. "Instead, you are to settle down in an area within this land where I'll tell you.
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For to you, and to your seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.
3 Sojourn in this land and (E)I will be with you and (F)bless you, for (G)to you and to your (b)descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham.
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
3 stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you and bless you.(C) For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring,(D) and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.(E)
3 Remain in this land, and I'll be with and bless you by giving all these lands to you and to your descendants in fulfillment of my solemn promise that I made to your father Abraham.
4 I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and will give to your seed all these lands. In your seed will all the nations of the earth be blessed,
4 (I)I will multiply your (c)descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your (d)descendants all these lands; and (J)by your (e)descendants all the nations of the earth (f)shall be blessed;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
4 I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky, I will give your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed(a) by your offspring,(F)
4 I'll cause you to have as many descendants as the stars of the heavens, and I'll certainly give all these lands to your descendants. Later on, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will bless one another.
5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my requirements, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
5 because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My mandate, My commands, My statutes, and My instructions.”(G)
5 I'm going to do this because Abraham did what I told him to do. He kept my instructions, commands, statutes, and laws."
7 The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "My wife," lest, he thought, "the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at."
7 When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “(L)She is my sister,” for he was (M)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “(i)the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is (N)beautiful.”
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
7 When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,”(H) for he was afraid to say “my wife,” thinking,(I) “The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman.”(J)
7 Later on, the men of that place asked about his wife, so he replied, "She's my sister," because he was afraid to call her "my wife." He kept thinking, ""otherwise, the men around here will kill me on account of Rebekah, since she's very beautiful."
8 It happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife.
8 It came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
8 When Isaac had been there for some time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see(b) Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.
8 After he had been there awhile, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out through a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.
9 Abimelech called Isaac, and said, "Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, 'She is my sister?'" Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die because of her.'"
9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, certainly she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘I might die on account of her.’”
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
9 Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
9 So Abimelech called Isaac and confronted him. "She is definitely your wife!" he accused him, "So why did you claim, "She's my sister?'" Isaac responded, "Because I had thought ""otherwise, I'll die on account of her.'"
10 Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us."
10 (O)Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
10 Then Abimelech said, “What is this you’ve done to us? One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.”(K)
10 "What have you done to us?" Abimelech asked. "Any minute now, one of the people could have had sex with your wife and you would have caused all of us to be guilty."
11 Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death."
11 So Abimelech charged all the people, saying, “He who (P)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
11 So Abimelech warned all the people with these words: “Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly die.”
11 So he issued this order to everyone: "Whoever touches this man or his wife is to be executed."
12 Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. The LORD blessed him.
12 Now Isaac sowed in that land and (j)reaped in the same year a hundredfold. And (Q)the Lord blessed him,

13 The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

13 He became very wealthy and lived a life of wealth, becoming more and more wealthy.
14 He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him.
14 for (S)he had possessions of flocks (m)and herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
14 He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him.

15 Now all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

17 Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which (q)had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he (r)gave them the same names which his father had (s)given them.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
18 Isaac reopened the water wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. He gave them the same names his father had given them.
18 Isaac re-excavated some wells that his father had first dug during his lifetime, because the Philistines had filled them with sand after Abraham's death. Isaac renamed those wells with the same names that his father had called them.
20 The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." He called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar (V)quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well (u)Esek, because they contended with him.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Quarrel(f) because they quarreled with him.(N)
20 But the herdsmen who lived in Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen. "The water is ours," they said. As a result, Isaac named the well Esek, for they had fiercely disputed with him about it.
21 They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. He called its name Sitnah.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
21 When his workers started digging another well, those herdsmen quarreled about that one, too, so Isaac named it Sitnah.
22 He left that place, and dug another well. They did not argue over that one. He called it Rehoboth. He said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land."
22 He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it (w)Rehoboth, for he said, “(x)(W)At last the Lord has made (y)room for us, and we will be (X)fruitful in the land.”
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
22 He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Open Spaces(h) and said, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
22 Then he left that area and dug still another well. Because they did not quarrel over that one, Isaac named it Rehoboth, because he used to say, "The LORD has enlarged the territory for us. We will prosper in the land."
24 The LORD appeared to him the same night, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Do not be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham's sake."
24 The Lord (Z)appeared to him the same night and said,“(AA)I am the God of your father Abraham;(AB)Do not fear, for I am with you.I (AC)will bless you, and multiply your (z)descendants,For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
24 and the Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(O) Do not be afraid, for I am with you.(P) I will bless you and multiply your offspring because of My servant Abraham.”
24 where one night the LORD appeared to him. "I am the God of your father Abraham," he told him. "Don't be afraid, because I'm with you. I'm going to bless you and multiply your descendants on account of my servant Abraham."
25 He built an altar there, and called on the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac's servants dug a well.

26 Later, Abimelech traveled from Gerar to visit Isaac. He arrived with Ahuzzath, his staff advisor, and Phicol, the commanding officer of his army.
27 Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?"
27 Isaac said to them, “(AF)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me? You hated me and sent me away from you.”
27 "Why have you come to see me," Isaac asked them, "since you hate me so much that you sent me away from you?"
28 They said, "We saw plainly that the LORD was with you. We said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,
28 They said, “We see plainly (AG)that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between (ab)you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
28 They replied, “We have clearly seen how the Lord has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties—between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you:
28 "We've seen that the LORD is with you," they responded, "so we're proposing an agreement between us between us and you. Allow us to make a treaty with you
29 that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.' You are now the blessed of the LORD."
29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you (ac)and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AH)blessed of the Lord.’”
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
29 You will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have only done what was good to you, sending you away in peace. You are now blessed by the Lord.”(T)
29 by which you'll agree not to do us any harm, just as we haven't harmed you, since we've done nothing but good for you after we sent you away in peace. As a result, you've been tremendously blessed by the LORD."
31 They rose up some time in the morning, and swore one to another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
31 In the morning they arose early and (ad)(AJ)exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
31 They got up early in the morning and swore an oath to each other.(i)(U) Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace.
31 They woke up early the next morning and made the treaty. After this, Isaac sent them off and they left on peaceful terms.
32 It happened the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."
32 Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”

34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
