Prelude To The Flood

1 Now it happened, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

1 Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

1 When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them,

1 Now after the population of human beings had increased throughout the earth, and daughters had been born to them,

2 that the (a)sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and desirable; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose and desired.

2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were (a)beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

2 the sons of God(A) saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives(a) for themselves.(B)

2 some divine beings noticed how attractive human women were, so they took wives for themselves from a selection that pleased them.

3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive and remain with man forever, because he is indeed flesh [sinful, corrupt—given over to sensual appetites]; nevertheless his days shall yet be (b)a hundred and twenty years.”

3 Then the Lord said, “(A)My Spirit shall not (b)strive with man forever, (c)(B)because he also is flesh; (d)nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain(b) with(c) mankind forever,(C) because they are corrupt.(d)(D) Their days will be 120 years.”

3 So the LORD said, "My Spirit won't remain with human beings forever, because they're truly mortal. Their lifespan will be 120 years."

4 There were Nephilim (men of stature, notorious men) on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they gave birth to their children. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown (great reputation, fame).(A)

4 The (C)Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

4 The Nephilim(e) were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.

4 The Nephilim were on the earth at that time (and also immediately afterward), when those divine beings were having sexual relations with those human women, who gave birth to children for them. These children became the heroes and legendary figures of ancient times.

Judgment Decreed

5 The Lord saw that the wickedness (depravity) of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination or intent of the thoughts of his heart were only evil continually.

5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that (D)every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

5 When the Lord saw that man’s wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every scheme his mind thought of was nothing but evil all the time,(E)

5 The LORD saw that human evil was growing more and more throughout the earth, with every inclination of people's thoughts becoming only evil on a continuous basis.

6 The Lord (c)regretted that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was [deeply] grieved in His heart.

6 (E)The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was (F)grieved (e)in His heart.

6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

6 the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth,(F) and He was grieved in His heart.

6 Then the LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and he was deeply grieved about that.

7 So the Lord said, “I will destroy (annihilate) mankind whom I have created from the surface of the earth—not only man, but the animals and the crawling things and the birds of the air—because it [deeply] grieves Me [to see mankind’s sin] and I regret that I have made them.”

7 The Lord said, “(G)I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the (f)sky; for (H)I am sorry that I have made them.”

7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

7 Then the Lord said, “I will wipe off from the face of the earth mankind, whom I created, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.”

7 So the LORD said, "I will annihilate these human beings whom I've created from the earth, including people, animals, crawling things, and flying creatures, because I'm grieving that I made them."

8 But Noah found favor and grace in the eyes of the Lord.

8 But (I)Noah (J)found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

8 Noah, however, found favor in the sight of the Lord.(G)

8 However, the LORD was pleased with Noah.

God Warns Noah

9 These are the records of the generations (family history) of Noah. Noah was a righteous man [one who was just and had right standing with God], blameless in his [evil] generation; Noah walked (lived) [in habitual fellowship] with God.

9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a (K)righteous man, (g)(L)blameless in his (h)time; Noah (M)walked with God.

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

9 These are the family records(H) of Noah. Noah was a righteous man,(I) blameless among his contemporaries;(J) Noah walked with God.(K)

10 Now Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

10 Noah (i)became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

10 Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Noah

11 The [population of the] earth was corrupt [absolutely depraved—spiritually and morally putrid] in God’s sight, and the land was filled with violence [desecration, infringement, outrage, assault, and lust for power].

11 Now the earth was (N)corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was (O)filled with violence.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness.(f)

11 By this time, the earth had become ruined in God's opinion and filled with violence.

12 God looked on the earth and saw how debased and degenerate it was, for all humanity had corrupted their way on the earth and lost their true direction.

12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for (P)all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

12 God saw how corrupt the earth was, for every creature had corrupted its way on the earth.(L)

12 God looked at the earth, observing how corrupt its population had become, because the entire human race had corrupted itself.

13 God said to Noah, “I intend to make an end of all that lives, for through men the land is filled with violence; and behold, I am about to (d)destroy them together with the land.

13 Then God said to Noah, “(Q)The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to every creature, for the earth is filled with wickedness(g) because of them; therefore I am going to destroy them along with the earth.

13 So God announced to Noah, "I've decided to destroy every living thing on earth, because it has become filled with violence due to them. Look! I'm about to annihilate them, along with the earth.

14 Make yourself an (e)ark of (f)gopher wood; make in it rooms (stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, compartments) and (g)coat it inside and out with pitch (bitumen).

14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall (j)cover it inside and out with pitch.

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

14 “Make yourself an ark of gopher(h) wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and outside.

14 So make yourself an ark out of cedar, constructing compartments in it, and cover it inside and out with tar.

15 This is the way you are to make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits (450’ x 75’ x 45’).

15 This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred (k)cubits, its breadth fifty (l)cubits, and its height thirty (m)cubits.

15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

15 This is how you are to make it: The ark will be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.(i)

15 Make the ark like this: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

16 You shall make a (h)window [for light and ventilation] for the ark, and finish it to at least a cubit (eighteen inches) from the top—and set the [entry] door of the ark in its side; and you shall make it with lower, second and third decks.

16 You shall make a (n)window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from (o)the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

16 You are to make a roof,(j) finishing the sides of the ark to within 18 inches(k) of the roof. You are to put a door in the side of the ark. Make it with lower, middle, and upper decks.

16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish the walls to within one cubit from the top. Place the entrance in the side of the ark, and build a lower, a middle, and an upper deck.

17 For behold, I, even I, will bring a flood of waters on the earth, to destroy all life under the heavens in which there is the breath and spirit of life; everything that is on the land shall die.

17 Behold, (R)I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

17 “Understand that I am bringing a flood—floodwaters on the earth(M) to destroy every creature under heaven with the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will die.

17 "For my part, I'm about to flood the earth with water and destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.

18 But I will establish My covenant (solemn promise, formal agreement) with you; and you shall come into the ark—you and your [three] sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

18 But I will establish (S)My covenant with you; and (T)you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

18 But I will establish My covenant with you,(N) and you will enter the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives.

18 However, I will establish my own covenant with you, and you are to enter the ark you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives.

19 And of every living thing [found on land], you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

19 (U)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

19 You are also to bring into the ark two of all the living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.

19 You are to bring two of every living thing into the ark so they may remain alive with you. They are to be male and female.

20 Of fowls and birds according to their kind, of animals according to their kind, of every crawling thing of the ground according to its kind—two of every kind shall come to you to keep them alive.

20 (V)Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

20 Two of everything—from the birds according to their kinds, from the livestock according to their kinds, and from the animals that crawl on the ground according to their kinds—will come to you so that you can keep them alive.

20 From birds according to their species, from domestic animals according to their species, and from everything that crawls on the ground according to their species two of everything will come to you so they may remain alive.

21 Also take with you every kind of food that is edible, and you shall collect and store it; and it shall be food for you and for them.”

21 As for you, take for yourself some of all (W)food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

21 Take with you every kind of food that is eaten; gather it as food for you and for them.”

21 For your part, take some of the edible food and store it away these stores will be food for you and the animals."

22 So Noah did this; according to all that God commanded him, that is what he did.

22 (X)Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

22 And Noah did this. He did everything that God had commanded him.(O)

22 Noah did all of this, precisely as God had commanded.
