The Temple Lies In Ruins

1 On the first day of the sixth month of the second year of the reign of King Darius, this message from the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Shealtiel's son Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, and to Jehozadak's son Joshua, the high priest:

1 In the (A)second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet (B)Haggai to (C)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, (D)governor of Judah, and to (E)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

1 In the second year of King Darius,(a)(A) on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through Haggai(B) the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,(C) the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:(D)

1 In the second year of (a)Darius the king [of Persia], on the first day of the sixth month (Aug 29, 520 b.c.), the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

2 "This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "These people keep saying, "No, the right time for rebuilding the LORD's Temple has not yet come."'"

2 “Thus says the Lord of (a)hosts, ‘This people says, “The time has not come, even the time for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.”’”

2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built.

2 “The Lord of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.”(E)

2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘These people say, “The time has not come that the Lord’s house (temple) should be (b)rebuilt.”’”(A)

3 Then this message from the LORD came by Haggai the prophet:

3 Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

3 The word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet:

3 Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4 "Is it the right time for all of you to live in your own paneled houses while this house remains in ruins?"

4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house (F)lies desolate?”

4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses,(F) while this house(b) lies in ruins?”

4 “Is it time for you yourselves to live in your [expensive] paneled houses while this house [of the Lord] lies in ruins?”

5 "Now this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, says: "Carefully consider your ways:

5 Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, “(b)Consider your ways!

5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

5 Now, the Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully(G) about(c) your ways:

5 Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, “Consider your ways and thoughtfully reflect on your conduct!

6 You have sowed much but have reaped little. You have eaten but don't have enough to become satisfied. You have drunk but don't have enough to become intoxicated. You have clothed yourself but don't have enough to keep warm. And the hired laborer deposits his salary in a bag full of holes!'"

6 You have (G)sown much, but (c)harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is (d)not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes.”

6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

6 You have planted muchbut harvested little. You eatbut never have enough to be satisfied. You drinkbut never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothesbut never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wagesinto a bag with a hole in it.”(H)

6 You have planted much, but you harvest little; you eat, but you do not have enough; you drink, but you do not have enough to be intoxicated; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns wages earns them just to put them in a bag with holes in it [because God has withheld His blessing].”

7 "This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Carefully consider your ways:

7 Thus says the Lord of hosts, “(e)Consider your ways!

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

7 The Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully about(d) your ways.

7 Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Consider your ways and thoughtfully reflect on your conduct!

8 Go up into the mountains, bring timber, and reconstruct my house. Then I will be pleased with it and I will be honored,' says the LORD.

8 Go up to the (f)mountains, bring wood and (H)rebuild the (g)temple, that I may be (I)pleased with it and be (J)glorified,” says the Lord.

8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord.

8 Go up to the hill country, bring lumber and rebuild My house (temple), that I may be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord [accepting it as done for My glory].

9 "You turned away in pursuit of abundance, but look at how little you found! What you did manage to bring home, I blew away! And why?' declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. "It's because of my house! It lies in ruins while each of you runs off to his own house!

9 (K)You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I (L)blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of hosts, “Because of My house which (M)lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.

9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

9 “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined(e) it. Why?” This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. “Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

9 You look for much [harvest], but it comes to little; and even when you bring that home, I blow it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house, which lies in ruins while each of you runs to his own house [eager to enjoy it].

10 That is why the heavens keep withholding dew from you, and the earth withholds her fruit.

10 Therefore, because of you the (N)sky has withheld (h)its dew and the earth has withheld its produce.

10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.

10 So on your account,(f)the skies have withheld the dewand the land its crops.(I)

10 Therefore, because of you [that is, your sin and disobedience] the heavens withhold the dew and the earth withholds its produce.

11 I sent a drought on the land, on the mountains, on your grain, on your new wines, on your oil on everything the ground produces on men, on livestock, and on everything you do!'"

11 I called for a (O)drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on (P)men, on cattle, and on (Q)all the labor of (i)your hands.”

11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

11 I have summoned a droughton the fields and the hills,on the grain, new wine, olive oil,and whatever the ground yields,on man and beast, and on all that your hands produce.”

11 I called for a drought on the land and the hill country, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands.”

The People Obey The Lord

12 Then Shealtiel's son Zerubbabel, Jehozadak's son Joshua the high priest, and all the rest of the people obeyed the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.

12 Then (R)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and (S)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, (T)obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people (j)(U)showed reverence for the Lord.

12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.

12 Then Zerubbabel(J) son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people(K) obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. So the people feared the Lord.(L)

12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people [who had returned from exile], listened carefully and obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, since the Lord their God had sent him. And the people [reverently] feared the Lord.

13 Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with a special commission from the LORD: ""I am with you,' declares the LORD."

13 Then Haggai, the (V)messenger of the Lord, spoke (k)by the commission of the Lord to the people saying, “‘(W)I am with you,’ declares the Lord.”

13 Then spake Haggai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.

13 Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, delivered the Lord’s message to the people, “I am with you”(M)—this is the Lord’s declaration.

13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people saying, “‘I am with you,’ declares the Lord.”

14 Then the LORD revitalized the spirit of Shealtiel's son Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, the spirit of Jehozadak's son Joshua the high priest, and the spirit of all the rest of the people, so they came and began to work on the house of their God, the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

14 So the Lord stirred up the spirit of (X)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, (Y)governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the (Z)remnant of the people; and they came and (AA)worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

14 The Lord stirred up the spirit(N) of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God,

14 So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,
