A Promise To Rebuild
1 On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came by (A)Haggai the prophet saying,
1 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,
1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(A) the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet:
1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, this message from the LORD came by Haggai the prophet:
2 “Speak now to (B)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, (C)governor of Judah, and to (D)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the (E)remnant of the people saying,
2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
2 “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people:
2 "Speak to Shealtiel's son Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, to Jehozadak's son Joshua, the high priest, and to the rest of the people, asking,
2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
3 ‘Who is (F)left among you who saw this (a)temple in its (G)former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not (b)seem to you like nothing (c)in comparison?
3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
3 Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing to you?(a)(B)
3 "Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And what does it look like now? From what you can see, it seems like nothing, doesn't it?
4 But now (d)(H)take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work; for (I)I am with you,’ declares the Lord of hosts.
4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
4 Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel”—this is the Lord’s declaration.(C) “Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “Work! For I am with you”(D)—the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
4 Now be strong, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, "and be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and be strong, all you people of the land,' declares the LORD. "Go to work, because I am with you,' declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
4 But now be courageous, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord, ‘be courageous also, Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and be courageous, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ declares the Lord of hosts.
5 ‘As for the (e)(J)promise which I (f)made you when you came out of Egypt, (g)My (K)Spirit is abiding in your midst; (L)do not fear!’
5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
5 “This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt,(E) and My Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.”
5 "My Spirit continues to dwell among you, according to the covenant I established when you came out from Egypt. Don't be afraid!'
5 ‘As for the promise which I made with you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit stands [firm and immovable] and continues with you; do not fear!’
6 For thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘(M)Once more (h)in a (N)little while, I am going to (O)shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
6 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
6 For the Lord of Hosts says this: “Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth,(F) the sea and the dry land.(G)
6 "For this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Once more, in a little while, I will make the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land to shake.
7 I will shake (P)all the nations; and (i)they will come with the (Q)wealth of all nations, and I will (R)fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts.
7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
7 I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,”(H) says the Lord of Hosts.
7 I will shake all nations, and the One desired by all nations will come. Then I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
8 “The silver and gold belong to Me”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
8 "The silver belongs to me, as does the gold," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
8 ‘The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,’ declares the Lord of hosts.
9 ‘The latter (T)glory of this house will be greater than the (U)former,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give (V)peace,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
9 “The final glory of this house(b) will be greater than the first,”(I) says the Lord of Hosts. “I will provide peace in this place”(J)—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
9 "The glory of this present house will be greater than was the former," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. "And in this place I will grant peace," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies."
From Deprivation To Blessing
10 On the (W)twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
10 In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet:
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of the second year of the reign of King Darius, this message from the LORD came to Haggai the prophet:
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month (Dec 18, 520 b.c.), in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
12 If a man carries (Y)holy meat in the (k)fold of his garment, and touches bread with (l)this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.”
12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
12 If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?”(L)The priests answered, “No.”
12 "If a man carries consecrated meat in the folds of his garment, and if his garment touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other edible thing, will these things become consecrated?"'" The priests answered, "No."
12 If a man carries meat that is holy [because it has been offered in sacrifice to God] in the fold of his garment, and he touches bread, or cooked food, or wine, or oil, or any [kind of] food with this fold, does what he touches become holy [dedicated exclusively to God’s service]?’” And the priests answered, “No!” [(d)Holiness is not transferrable.]
13 Then Haggai said, “(Z)If one who is unclean from a (m)corpse touches any of these, will the latter become unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will become unclean.”
13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
13 Then Haggai asked, “If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?”(M)The priests answered, “It becomes defiled.”
13 So Haggai responded, "If someone who is unclean because of contact with a dead body were to touch any of these things, would they become unclean?" The priests responded, "They would be unclean."
13 Then Haggai said, “If one who is [ceremonially] unclean because of [contact with] a corpse touches any of these [articles of food], will it be unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will be unclean.” [Ceremonial uncleanness, like sin, is infectious.]
14 Then Haggai said, “‘(AA)So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.
14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
14 Then Haggai replied, “So is this people, and so is this nation before Me”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled.
14 Then Haggai answered, ""That's how I look at this people and this nation,' declares the LORD. "And that's how it is with everything they undertake and with what they offer there it is unclean.
14 Then Haggai answered, “‘So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there [on the altar] is unclean [because they who offer it are unclean].
The Lord Promises His Blessing
15 But now, do (n)(AB)consider from this day (o)onward: before one (AC)stone was placed on another in the temple of the Lord,
15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:
15 “Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the Lord’s temple,
15 Pay attention from now on to how things used to be before one stone had been laid upon another in the Temple of the LORD.
15 But now, do consider [what will happen] from this day forward: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the Lord,
16 (p)from that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty (q)measures, there would be only twenty.
16 Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.
16 what state were you in?(c) When someone came to a grain heap of 20 measures, it only amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it only amounted to 20.
16 When someone came to a pile of grain to get 20 measures, there were only ten. Or when someone approached the wine press to siphon out 50 measures, there were only 20.
16 from that time when one came to a grain heap expecting twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures, there would be only twenty.
17 I smote you and every work of your hands with (AD)blasting wind, mildew and hail; (r)yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares the Lord.
17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.
17 I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew,(N) and hail,(O) but you didn’t turn to Me”—this is the Lord’s declaration.
17 I punished you and everything that you undertook with scorching wind, with mildew, and with hail, and you still did not return to me,' declares the LORD.
17 I struck you and the work of your hands with scorching wind, mildew, and hail; yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares the Lord.
18 ‘Do (s)(AE)consider from this day (t)onward, from the (AF)twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of the Lord was (AG)founded, (u)consider:
18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it.
18 “Consider carefully(P) from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid; consider it carefully.
18 "Pay attention from now on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, when the foundation of the LORD's Temple was laid. Pay attention!
18 ‘Do consider from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of the Lord was founded, consider:
19 Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from this day on I will (AH)bless you.’”
19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
19 Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you.”(Q)
19 Is there seed left in the granary? Up until now, neither the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, nor the olive tree has borne fruit, but from this very day I will bless you.'"
19 Is the seed still in the barn? As to the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree—they have not produced. Yet from this day on I will bless you [in the harvest of your crops].’”
The Coming Kingdom
20 Then the word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the (AI)twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
20 And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,
20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
20 This message from the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
20 And again the word of the Lord came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month (Dec 18, 520 b.c.), saying,
22 I will (AL)overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the (AM)power of the kingdoms of the (v)nations; and I will (AN)overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the (AO)horses and their riders will go down, (AP)everyone by the sword of another.’
22 And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
22 I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms.(S) I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother’s sword.
22 I will overthrow royal thrones. I will annihilate the strength of national governments. I will overthrow chariots along with those who drive them. Both horses and their riders will fall, each one by means of his comrade's weapon.
22 I will [in the distant future] overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the [ungodly] nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and those who ride in them, and the horses and their riders will go down, every one by the sword of his brother [annihilating one another].(D)
23 ‘On that day,’ declares the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like a (w)(AQ)signet ring, for (AR)I have chosen you,’” declares the Lord of hosts.
23 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
23 On that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts—“I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and make you like My signet ring,(T) for I have chosen you.”(U) This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
23 On that day,' declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,' declares the LORD, "and I will set you in place like a signet ring. For I have chosen you,' declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies."
23 On that day,’ declares the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you [through the Messiah, your descendant] like a (f)signet ring, for I have chosen you [as the one with whom to renew My covenant to David’s line],’” declares the Lord of hosts.(E)
