Examples Of Faith In Action

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the sign that the things not seen are true.

1 Now faith is the (a)(A)assurance of things (b)(B)hoped for, the (c)conviction of (C)things not seen.

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

1 Now faith is the reality(a) of what is hoped for, the proof(b) of what is not seen.(A)

1 Now faith is the assurance that what we hope for will come about and the certainty that what we cannot see exists.

2 For by it our fathers had God's approval.

2 For by it the (D)men of old (d)(E)gained approval.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

2 For our ancestors won God’s approval by it.

2 By faith our ancestors won approval.

3 By faith it is clear to us that the order of events was fixed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made from things which only seem to be.

3 By faith we understand that the (e)(F)worlds were prepared (G)by the word of God, so that what is seen (H)was not made out of things which are visible.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

3 By faith we understand that the universe was(c) created by God’s command,(d)(B) so that what is seen has been made from things that are not visible.

3 By faith we understand that time was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are invisible.

4 By faith Abel made a better offering to God than Cain, and he had witness through it of his righteousness, God giving his approval of his offering: and his voice still comes to us through it though he is dead.

4 By faith (I)Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he (J)obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying (f)about his (K)gifts, and through (g)faith, though (L)he is dead, he still speaks.

4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts, and even though he is dead, he still speaks through his faith.(C)

4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did, and by faith he was declared to be righteous, since God himself accepted his offerings. And by faith he continues to speak, even though he is dead.

5 By faith Enoch was taken up to heaven so that he did not see death; he was seen no longer, for God took him away: for before he was taken, witness had been given that he was well-pleasing to God:

5 By faith (M)Enoch was taken up so that he would not (N)see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.

5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

5 By faith Enoch was taken away so he did not experience death, and he was not to be found because God took him away.(e) For prior to his removal he was approved, since he had pleased God.(D)

5 By faith Enoch was taken away without experiencing death. He could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he won approval as one who pleased God.

6 And without faith it is not possible to be well-pleasing to him, for it is necessary for anyone who comes to God to have the belief that God is, and that he is a rewarder of all those who make a serious search for him.

6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who (O)comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

6 Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.

6 Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him.

7 By faith Noah, being moved by the fear of God, made ready an ark for the salvation of his family, because God had given him news of things which were not seen at the time; and through it the world was judged by him, and he got for his heritage the righteousness which is by faith.

7 By faith (P)Noah, being (Q)warned by God about (R)things not yet seen, (h)(S)in reverence (T)prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of (U)the righteousness which is according to faith.

7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

7 By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.(E)

7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, reverently prepared an ark to save his family, and by faith he condemned the world and inherited the righteousness that comes by faith.

8 By faith Abraham did as God said when he was ordered to go out into a place which was to be given to him as a heritage, and went out without knowledge of where he was going.

8 By faith (V)Abraham, when he was called, obeyed (i)by going out to a place which he was to (W)receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and went out to a place he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he was going.(F)

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

9 By faith he was a wanderer in the land of the agreement, as in a strange land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who had a part with him in the same heritage:

9 By faith he lived as an alien in (X)the land of promise, as in a foreign land, (Y)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, (Z)fellow heirs of the same promise;

9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

9 By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, coheirs of the same promise.(G)

9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who also inherited the same promise,

10 For he was looking for the strong town, whose builder and maker is God.

10 for he was looking for (AA)the city which has (AB)foundations, (AC)whose architect and builder is God.

10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.(H)

10 because he was waiting for the city with permanent foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

11 And by faith Sarah herself had power to give birth, when she was very old, because she had faith in him who gave his word;

11 By faith even (AD)Sarah herself received (j)ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him (AE)faithful who had promised.

11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

11 By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she(f) considered that the One who had promised was faithful.(I)

11 By faith Sarah, even though she was old and barren, received the strength to conceive, because she was convinced that the one who had made the promise was faithful.

12 So that from one man, who was near to death, came children in number as the stars in heaven, or as the sand by the seaside, which may not be numbered.

12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and (AF)him as good as dead (k)at that, as many descendants (AG)as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

12 Therefore from one man—in fact, from one as good as dead—came offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as innumerable as the grains of sand by the seashore.(J)

12 Abraham was as good as dead, yet from this one man came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

13 All these came to their end in faith, not having had the heritage; but having seen it with delight far away, they gave witness that they were wanderers and not of the earth.

13 (AH)All these died in faith, (AI)without receiving the promises, but (AJ)having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and (AK)having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

13 These all died in faith without having received the promises, but they saw them from a distance,(K) greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.(L)

13 All these people died having faith. They did not receive the things that were promised, yet they saw them in the distant future and welcomed them, acknowledging that they were strangers and foreigners on earth.

14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are searching for a country for themselves.

14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.

14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

14 Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

14 For people who say such things make it clear that they are looking for a country of their own.

15 And truly if they had kept in mind the country from which they went out, they would have had chances of turning back.

15 And indeed if they had been (l)thinking of that country from which they went out, (AL)they would have had opportunity to return.

15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

15 If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return.

15 If they had been thinking about what they had left behind, they would have had an opportunity to go back.

16 But now their desire is for a better country, that is to say, for one in heaven; and so it is no shame to God to be named their God; for he has made ready a town for them.

16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a (AM)heavenly one. Therefore (AN)God is not (m)ashamed to be (AO)called their God; for (AP)He has prepared a city for them.

16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

16 But they now desire a better place—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.(M)

16 Instead, they were longing for a better country, that is, a heavenly one. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, because he has prepared a city for them.
