Yahweh Blesses Chosen Israel

1 So hear now, O Jacob my servant, and Israel whom I have chosen.

1 “But now listen, O Jacob, My (A)servant,And Israel, whom I have chosen:

1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

1 “And now listen, Jacob My servant,Israel whom I have chosen.(A)

1 "But now listen, Jacob my servant and Israel whom I have chosen:

2 For thus sayeth the LORD, that made thee, fashioned thee, and helped thee, even from thy mother's womb: Be not afraid, O Jacob my servant, thou righteous, whom I have chosen.

2 Thus says the Lord who made youAnd (B)formed you from the womb, who (C)will help you,(D)Do not fear, O Jacob My servant;And you (E)Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

2 This is the word of the Lordyour Maker who formed you from the womb;He(a) will help you:Do not fear; Jacob is My servant;I have chosen Jeshurun.(b)(B)

2 This what the LORD says, the one who made you, formed you from the womb, and who will help you: "Don't be afraid, Jacob my servant, and Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

3 For I shall pour water upon the dry ground, and rivers upon the thirsty. I shall pour my spirit upon thy seed, and mine increase upon thy stock.

3 ‘For (F)I will pour out water on (a)the thirsty landAnd streams on the dry ground;I will (G)pour out My Spirit on your (H)offspringAnd My blessing on your descendants;

3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

3 For I will pour water on the thirsty landand streams on the dry ground;I will pour out My Spirit(C) on your descendantsand My blessing on your offspring.

3 For I'll pour water upon thirsty ground and streams on parched land. So will I pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing upon your descendants.

4 They shall grow together, like as the grass, and as the Willows by the waterside.

4 And they will spring up (b)among the grassLike (I)poplars by streams of water.’

4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

4 They will sprout among(c) the grasslike poplars by flowing streams.

4 They'll spring up as among the green grass, like willows by flowing streams.

5 One will say, "I am the LORD's." Another will call under the name of Jacob. The third shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and give himself under the name of Israel.

5 “This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;And that one (c)will call on the name of Jacob;And another will (J)write (d)on his hand, ‘Belonging to the Lord,’And will name Israel’s name with honor.

5 One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

5 This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;another will call himself by the name of Jacob;still another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’and name himself by the name of Israel.”

5 One will say, "I belong to the LORD,' and another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will have written on his hand, "the LORD's,' and will adopt the name of Israel."

Yahweh The Only God

6 Moreover, thus hath the LORD spoken; even the King of Israel, and his avenger, the LORD of Hosts: I am the first and the last, and without me is there no God.

6 “Thus says the Lord, the (K)King of Israel and his (L)Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:‘I am the (M)first and I am the last,And there is no God (N)besides Me.

6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

6 This is what the Lord, the King of Israel and its Redeemer,(D) the Lord of Hosts, says:I am the first and I am the last.(E)There is no God but Me.(F)

6 This is what the LORD says, the King of Israel and its Redeemer the LORD of the Heavenly Armies is his name "I am the first and I am the last, and apart from me there is no God.

7 For what is he that ever was like me, which am from everlasting? Let him show his name, and do wherethrough he may be likened unto me. Let him tell you forth, plainly, things that are past, and for to come:

7 ‘Who is like Me? (O)Let him proclaim and declare it;Yes, let him recount it to Me in order,(e)From the time that I established the ancient (f)nation.And let them declare to them the things that are comingAnd the events that are going to take place.

7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.

7 Who, like Me, can announce the future?Let him say so and make a case before Me,(G)since I have established an ancient people.Let these gods declare(d) the coming things,and what will take place.

7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim and declare it, and lay it out for himself since he made an ancient people. And let him speak future events; let them tell him what will happen.

8 yea, and that without any fear or stop. For have not I ever told you hitherto, and warned you? Ye can bear me record yourselves. Is there any God except me? Or any maker, that I should not know him?

8 ‘Do not tremble and do not be afraid;(P)Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it?And (Q)you are My witnesses.Is there any God (R)besides Me,Or is there any other (S)Rock?I know of none.’”

8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

8 Do not be startled or afraid.Have I not told you and declared it long ago?You are my witnesses!(H)Is there any God but Me?(I)There is no other Rock;(J) I do not know any.

8 Don't tremble, and don't be afraid. Didn't I tell you and announce it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? There is no other Rock I don't know of any."

Idolatry Is Ridiculous

9 All carvers of Images are but vain, and the carved images that they love can do no good. They must bear record themselves, that seeing they can neither see nor understand they shall be confounded.

9 Those who fashion (g)a graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be (T)put to shame.

9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

9 All who make idols are nothing,and what they treasure does not profit.Their witnesses do not see or know anything,so they will be put to shame.(K)

9 Now, all the forming of images means nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Their own witnesses cannot see, and they know nothing. So they will be put to shame.

10 Who should now make a God, or fashion an Image, that is profitable for nothing?

10 Who has fashioned a god or cast (h)an idol to (U)no profit?

10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?

10 Who makes a god or casts a metal imagefor no profit?(L)

10 Who would shape a god or cast an image that profits nothing?

11 Behold, all the fellowship of them must be brought to confusion. Let all the workmasters of them come and stand together from among men: they must be abashed and confounded one with another.

11 Behold, all his companions will be (V)put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them together be put to shame.

11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.

11 Look, all its worshipers will be put to shame,and the craftsmen are humans.They all will assemble and stand;they all will be startled and put to shame.

11 To be sure, all who associate with it will be put to shame; and as for the craftsmen, they are only human. Let them all gather together and take their stand. Then let them be terrified they will be humiliated together.

12 The smith taketh iron, and tempereth it with hot coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and maketh it with all the strength of his arms: yea, sometimes he is faint for very hunger, and so thirsty, that he hath no more power.

12 The (W)man shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, (i)fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and (j)his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary.

12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.

12 The ironworker labors over the coals,shapes the idol with hammers,and works it with his strong arm.Also he grows hungry and his strength fails;he doesn’t drink water and is faint.

12 The blacksmith prepares a tool and works in the coals, then fashions an idol with hammers, working by the strength of his arm. He even becomes hungry and loses his strength; he drinks no water and grows faint.

13 The carpenter or image carver taketh meat of the timber, and spreadeth forth his line; he marketh it with some colour; he planeth it, he ruleth it, and squareth it, and maketh it after the image of a man; and according to the beauty of a man that it may stand in the temple.

13 (X)Another shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk. He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of (Y)man, so that it may sit in a (Z)house.

13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

13 The woodworker stretches out a measuring line,he outlines it with a stylus;he shapes it with chiselsand outlines it with a compass.He makes it according to a human likeness,(M)like a beautiful person,to dwell in a temple.

13 The carpenter measures it with a line; he traces its shape with a stylus, then fashions it with planes and shapes it with a compass. He makes the idol like a human figure, with human beauty, to be at home in a shrine.

14 Moreover, he goeth out to hew down Cedar trees: He bringeth home Elms and Oaks, and other timber of the wood. Or else the Fir trees which he planted himself, and such as the rain hath swelled,

14 Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a (k)cypress or an oak and (l)raises it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow.

14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

14 He cuts down(e) cedars for his use,or he takes a cypress or an oak.He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest.He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.

14 He cuts down cedars, or chooses a cypress tree or an oak, and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. Or he plants a cedar, and the rain makes it grow.

15 which wood serveth for men to burn. Of this he taketh and warmeth himself withal: he maketh a fire of it to bake bread. And afterward maketh a god thereof, to honour it: and an Idol to kneel before it.

15 Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also (AA)makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and (AB)falls down before it.

15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

15 It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.

15 He divides it up for people to burn. Taking part of it, he warms himself, makes a fire, and bakes bread. Or perhaps he constructs a god and worships it. He makes it an idol and bows down to it.

16 One piece he burneth in the fire; with another he roasteth flesh, that he may eat roast his belly full; with the third he warmeth himself, and sayeth, "Aha, I am well warmed, I have been at the fire."

16 Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire.”

16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:

16 He burns half of it in a fire,and he roasts meat on that half.He eats the roast and is satisfied.He warms himself and says, “Ah!I am warm, I see the blaze.”

16 Half the wood he burns in the fire, and over that half he places meat so he can eat. He sits by its coals, warms himself, and says, "Ah! I am warm in front of the fire."

17 And of the residue he maketh him a god, and an Idol for himself. He kneeleth before it, he worshippeth it, he prayeth unto it, and sayeth, "Deliver me, for thou art my god!"

17 But the rest of it he (AC)makes into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also (AD)prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”

17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

17 He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.He bows down to it and worships;He prays to it,(N) “Save me, for you are my god.”

17 And the rest of it he makes into a god. To blocks of wood he bows down, worships, prays, and says, "Save me, since you are my god."

18 Yet men neither consider nor understand; because their eyes are stopped that they cannot see, and their hearts, that they can not perceive.

18 They do not (AE)know, nor do they understand, for He has (AF)smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend.

18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.

18 Such people(f) do not comprehendand cannot understand,for He has shut their eyes(g) so they cannot see,and their minds so they cannot understand.

18 They don't realize; they don't understand, because their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds, too, so they cannot understand.

19 They ponder not in their minds, for they have neither knowledge nor understanding, to think thus, "I have burnt one piece in the fire; I have baked bread with the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh withal, and eaten it: shall I now of the residue make an abomination, and fall down before a rotten piece of wood?"

19 No one (m)recalls, nor is there (AG)knowledge or understanding to say, “I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then (n)I make the rest of it into an (AH)abomination, (o)I fall down before a block of wood!”

19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

19 No one reflects,no one has the perception or insight to say,“I burned half of it in the fire,I also baked bread on its coals,I roasted meat and ate.I will make something detestable(O) with the rest of it,and I will bow down to a block of wood.”

19 No one stops to think. No one has the knowledge or understanding to think yes to think! "Half of it I burned in the fire. I even baked bread on its coals, and I roasted meat and ate it. And am I about to make detestable things from what is left? Am I about to bow down to blocks of wood?"

20 The keeping of dust, and foolishness of heart hath turned them aside: so that none of them can have a free conscience to think, "Do not I err?"

20 He (p)(AI)feeds on ashes; a (AJ)deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver (q)himself, nor say, “(AK)Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

20 He feeds on(h) ashes.His deceived mind has led him astray,and he cannot deliver himself,or say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”(P)

20 He tends ashes. A deceived mind has lead him astray. It cannot be his life, nor can he say, "There's a lie in my right hand."

Yahweh Remembers Israel

21 Consider this, O Jacob and Israel, for thou art my servant. I have made thee, that thou mightest serve me. O Israel, forget me not.

22 As for thine offenses, I drive them away like the clouds, and thy sins as the mist. Turn ye again unto me, and I will deliver thee.

22 “I have (AO)wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloudAnd your sins like a (r)heavy mist.(AP)Return to Me, for I have (AQ)redeemed you.”

22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud,(R)and your sins like a mist.Return to Me,(S)for I have redeemed you.(T)

22 I've wiped away your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist. Return to me; because I've redeemed you.

23 Be glad ye heavens, whom the LORD hath made, let all that is here beneath upon the earth, be joyful. Rejoice ye mountains and woods, with all the trees that are in you: for the LORD shall redeem Jacob, and show his glory upon Israel.

23 (AR)Shout for joy, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!Shout joyfully, you lower parts of the earth;(AS)Break forth into a shout of joy, you mountains,O forest, and every tree in it;For (AT)the Lord has redeemed JacobAnd in Israel He (AU)shows forth His glory.

23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.

23 Rejoice, heavens,(U) for the Lord has acted;shout, depths of the earth.Break out into singing, mountains,forest, and every tree in it.For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,and glorifies Himself through Israel.(V)

23 "Shout for joy, you heavens, for the LORD has done it! Shout aloud, you depths of the earth! Burst out with singing, you mountains, you forest, and all your trees! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob and will display his glory in Israel.

Jerusalem Restored Through Cyrus

24 For thus sayeth the LORD thy redeemer, even he that fashioned thee from thy mother's womb: I am the LORD, which do all things myself alone. I only have spread out the heavens, and I only have laid the foundation of the earth.

24 Thus says the Lord, your (AV)Redeemer, and the one who (AW)formed you from the womb,“I, the Lord, am the maker of all things,(AX)Stretching out the heavens by MyselfAnd spreading out the earth (s)all alone,

24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

24 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer(W) who formed you from the womb,(X) says:I am Yahweh, who made everything;who stretched out the heavens by Myself;(Y)who alone spread out the earth;

24 "This is what the LORD says, your Redeemer and the one who formed you in the womb: "I am the LORD, who has made everything, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth Who was with me at that time?

25 I destroy the tokens of witches, and make the Soothsayers go wrong. As for the wise, I turn them backward, and make their cunning foolishness.

25 (AY)Causing the (t)omens of boasters to fail,(u)Making fools out of diviners,(AZ)Causing wise men to draw backAnd (v)turning their knowledge into foolishness,

25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

25 who destroys the omens of the false prophetsand makes fools of diviners;who confounds the wiseand makes their knowledge foolishness;(Z)

25 who frustrates the omens of idle talkers, and drives diviners mad, who turns back the wise, and makes their knowledge foolish;

26 But I set up the purpose of my servants, and fulfill the counsel of my messengers. I say unto Jerusalem, "Turn again," and to the cities of Judah, "Be ye builded again," and I repair their decayed places.

26 (BA)Confirming the word of His servantAnd (w)performing the purpose of His messengers.It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’And of the (BB)cities of Judah, ‘(BC)They shall be built.’And I will raise up her ruins again.

26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:

26 who confirms the message of His servantand fulfills the counsel of His messengers;who says to Jerusalem, “She will be inhabited,”and to the cities of Judah, “They will be rebuilt,”and I will restore her ruins;

26 who carries out the words of his servants, and fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, "It will be inhabited," and of Judah's cities, "They will be rebuilt," and of her ruins, "I'll raise them up";

27 I say to the ground, "Be dry," and I dry up thy water floods.

27 “It is I who says to the depth of the sea, ‘Be dried up!’And I will make your rivers (BD)dry.

27 That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:

27 who says to the depths of the sea, “Be dry,”and I will dry up your rivers;

27 who says to the watery deep, "Be dry I will dry up your rivers;"

28 I say to Cyrus, "Thou art mine herdsman," so that he shall fulfill all things after my will. I say unto Jerusalem, "Be thou builded," and to the temple, "Be thou fast grounded."

28 “It is I who says of (BE)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd!And he will perform all My desire.’And (x)he declares of Jerusalem, ‘(BF)She will be built,’And of the temple, ‘(y)Your foundation will be laid.’”

28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
