The Lord's Suffering Servant
2 For his growth was like that of a delicate plant before him, and like a root out of a dry place: he had no grace of form, to give us pleasure;
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
2 For He grew up before Him like a (B)tender (a)shoot,And like a root out of parched ground; He has (C)no stately form or majestyThat we should look upon Him,Nor appearance that we should (b)be attracted to Him.
2 He grew up before Him like a young plant(C)and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive formor majesty that we should look at Him,no appearance that we should desire Him.(D)
2 For he grew up before him like a tender plant, and like a root out of a dry ground; he had no form and he had no majesty that we should look at him, and there is no attractiveness that we should desire him.
3 Men made sport of him, turning away from him; he was a man of sorrows, marked by disease; and like one from whom men's faces are turned away, he was looked down on, and we put no value on him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
3 He was (D)despised and forsaken of men,A man of (c)sorrows and (E)acquainted with (d)grief; And like one from whom men hide their faceHe was (F)despised, and we did not (G)esteem Him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men,(E)a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.(F)He was like someone people turned away from;(b)He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.
3 "He was despised and rejected by others, and a man of sorrows, intimately familiar with suffering; and like one from whom people hide their faces; and we despised him and did not value him.
4 But it was our pain he took, and our diseases were put on him: while to us he seemed as one diseased, on whom God's punishment had come.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
4 Surely our (e)griefs He Himself (H)bore,And our (f)sorrows He carried;Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,(g)Smitten of (I)God, and afflicted.
4 Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains;(G)but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God,(H) and afflicted.
4 "Surely he has borne our sufferings and carried our sorrows; yet we considered him stricken, and struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But it was for our sins he was wounded, and for our evil doings he was crushed: he took the punishment by which we have peace, and by his wounds we are made well.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
5 But He was (h)pierced through for (J)our transgressions,He was crushed for (K)our iniquities; The (L)chastening for our (i)well-being fell upon Him,And by (M)His scourging we are healed.
5 But He was pierced because of our transgressions,(I)crushed because of our iniquities;(J)punishment(K) for our peace was on Him,and we are healed by His wounds.(L)
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, and he was crushed for our iniquities, and the punishment that made us whole was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed.
6 We all went wandering like sheep; going every one of us after his desire; and the Lord put on him the punishment of us all.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,Each of us has turned to his own way;But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us allTo (j)fall on Him.
6 We all went astray like sheep;(M)we all have turned to our own way;and the Lord has punished Himfor(c) the iniquity(N) of us all.(O)
6 All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned, each of us, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 Men were cruel to him, but he was gentle and quiet; as a lamb taken to its death, and as a sheep before those who take her wool makes no sound, so he said not a word.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,Yet He did not (N)open His mouth;(O)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,So He did not open His mouth.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth.Like a lamb led to the slaughterand like a sheep silent before her shearers,He did not open His mouth.(P)
7 He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he didn't open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
8 They took away from him help and right, and who gave a thought to his fate? for he was cut off from the land of the living: he came to his death for the sin of my people.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who consideredThat He was cut off out of the land of the (k)living(P)For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
8 He was taken away because of oppression and judgment;and who considered His fate?(d)For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was struck because of my people’s rebellion.
8 "From detention and judgment he was taken away and who can even think about his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living, he was stricken for the transgression of my people.
9 And they put his body into the earth with sinners, and his last resting-place was with the evil-doers, though he had done no wrong, and no deceit was in his mouth.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men,Yet He was with a (Q)rich man in His death,(R)Because He had (S)done no violence,Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
9 They(e) made His grave with the wickedand with a rich man at His death,(Q)although He had done no violenceand had not spoken deceitfully.(R)
9 Then they made his grave with the wicked, and with rich people in his death, although he had committed no violence, nor was there any deceit in his mouth."
10 And the Lord was pleased ... see a seed, long life, ... will do well in his hand. ...
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
10 But the Lord was pleasedTo (T)crush Him, (l)(U)putting Him to grief; If (m)He would render Himself as a guilt (V)offering,He will see (W)His (n)offspring,He will prolong His days,And the (o)good (X)pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
10 Yet the Lord was pleased(S) to crush Him severely.(f)(T)When(g) You make Him a restitution offering,(U)He will see His seed, He will prolong His days, and by His hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.(V)
10 "Yet the LORD was willing to crush him, and he made him suffer. Although you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring, and he will prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will triumph in his hand.
11 ... made clear his righteousness before men ... had taken their sins on himself.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
11 As a result of the (p)anguish of His soul,He will (Y)see (q)it and be satisfied;By His (Z)knowledge the Righteous One,My Servant, will justify the many,As He will (AA)bear their iniquities.
11 He will see it(h) out of His anguish, and He will be satisfied with His knowledge. My righteous(W) Servant(X) will justify many,(Y)and He will carry their iniquities.
11 Out of the suffering of his soul he will see light and find satisfaction. And through his knowledge his servant, the righteous one, will make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities.
12 For this cause he will have a heritage with the great, and he will have a part in the goods of war with the strong, because he gave up his life, and was numbered with the evil-doers; taking on himself the sins of the people, and making prayer for the wrongdoers.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a (AB)portion with the great,And He will divide the booty with the strong;Because He poured out (r)(AC)Himself to death,And was (AD)numbered with the transgressors;Yet He Himself (AE)bore the sin of many,And interceded for the transgressors.
12 Therefore I will give Him(i) the many as a portion, and He will receive(j) the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death,(Z)and was counted among the rebels;(AA)yet He bore the sin of many(AB)and interceded for the rebels.(AC)
12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong; because he poured out his life to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he carried the sins of many, and made intercession for their transgressions."
