1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.
1 "Arise, shine! For your light has come; the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
2 For look, darkness covers the earth,and total darkness the peoples;but the Lord will shine over you,and His glory will appear over you.
2 For look! Darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness is over the people, but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.
3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
3 Nations will come to your light, and kings before your dawn.
4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.
4 "Lift up your eyes and look around: They all gather together, they come to you; your sons will come from far away, and your daughters will be carried on the hip."
4 “Lift up your eyes around you and see;They all gather together, they come to you.Your sons will come from far away,And your daughters will be looked after at their side.
5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
5 Then you will look and be radiant; your heart will swell with joy, because the abundance of the seas will be diverted to you, and the riches of the nations will come to you.
6 The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the LORD.
6 “A multitude of camels will cover you,The young camels of Midian and (M)Ephah;All those from (N)Sheba will come;They will bring (O)gold and frankincense,And will (P)bear good news of the praises of the Lord.
6 Throngs of camels will blanket you: the young camels of Midian and Ephu; all those from Shebu will come. They'll carry gold and frankincense, and proclaim the praise of the LORD.
7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.
7 All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth will serve you. and they'll come up with acceptance upon my altar, and I'll glorify my glorious house."
7 “All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you [as the eastern pastoral tribes join the trading tribes],The rams of Nebaioth will serve you;They will go up with acceptance [as sacrifices] on My altar,And I will glorify the house of My honor and splendor.
8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
8 "Who are these that fly like clouds, and like doves to their windows?
8 “Who are these who fly like a cloudAnd like doves to their windows?
9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
9 “Surely the (U)coastlands will wait for Me;And the (V)ships of Tarshish will come first,To (W)bring your sons from afar,Their silver and their gold with them,For the name of the Lord your God,And for the Holy One of Israel because He has (f)(X)glorified you.
9 Yes, the islands will wait for Me(M)with the ships of Tarshish in the lead,(N)to bring your children from far away,(O)their silver and gold with them,for the honor of the Lord your God,the Holy One of Israel,(P)who has glorified you.(Q)
9 For the coastlands will look to me, with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring my children from far away, their silver and gold with them, to the name of the LORD your God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.
9 “The islands and coastlands will confidently wait for Me;And the ships of Tarshish will come first,To bring your sons from far away,Their silver and gold with them,For the name of the Lord your God,For the Holy One of Israel because He has glorified you.
10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
10 "Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Though in my anger I struck you down, in my favor I have shown you mercy.
10 “Foreigners will build up your walls,And their kings will serve you;For in My [righteous] wrath I struck you,But in My favor and grace I have had compassion on you.
11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
11 Your gates will always stand open by day or night, and they will not be shut, so that nations will bring you their wealth, with their kings led in procession.
12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; those nations will be utterly ruined.
12 “For the nation or the kingdom which will not serve you [Jerusalem] shall perish,And the nations [that refuse to serve] shall be utterly ruined.
13 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
13 "He has given you the glory of Lebanon, and it will come to you, the cypress, and the plane tree, and the pine, to adorn the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
14 “The (AI)sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,And all those who despised you will bow themselves at the soles of your feet;And they will call you the (AJ)city of the Lord,The (AK)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
14 "All the descendants of those who oppressed you will come bending low before you, and all those who despised you will bow down at your feet. They'll call you "The City of the LORD,' "Zion of the Holy One of Israel.'"
15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.
15 "Although you have been forsaken and despised, with no one traveling through, I will make you the everlasting pride, the joy of all generations.
15 “Whereas you [Jerusalem] have been abandoned and hatedWith no one passing through,I will make you an object of pride forever,A joy from generation to generation.
16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
16 You'll suck the milk of nations, You'll suck the breasts of kings. Then you will realize that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
16 “You will suck the milk of the [Gentile] nationsAnd suck the breast (abundance) of kings;Then you will recognize and know that I, the Lord, am your SaviorAnd your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,And instead of iron I will bring silver,And instead of wood, bronze,And instead of stones, iron.And I will make peace your administratorsAnd righteousness your overseers.
17 I will bring gold instead of bronze;I will bring silver instead of iron,bronze instead of wood,and iron instead of stones.I will appoint peace as your guardand righteousness as your ruler.
17 "Instead of bronze, I'll bring gold, and instead of iron, I'll bring silver; instead of wood, bronze, and instead of stones, iron. I'll appoint peace as your supervisor and righteousness as your taskmaster.
17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,And instead of iron I will bring silver,And instead of wood, bronze,And instead of stones, iron.And [instead of the tyranny of the present] I will appoint peace as your officers,And righteousness your rulers.
18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
18 Then violence will no longer be heard in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders; but you'll call your walls "Salvation', and your gates "Praise'.
18 “Violence will not be heard again in your land,Nor devastation or destruction within your borders;But you will call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise [to God].
19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
19 "The sun will no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness will the moon shine on you by night for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
20 Your sun won't set, nor will your moon withdraw itself for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning will end.
20 “Your sun will no longer set,Nor will your moon wane;For the Lord will be your everlasting light,And the days of your mourning will be over.
21 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
21 Then your people will all be righteous; They'll possess the land forever. They are the shoot that the LORD planted, the works of his hands, so that I might be glorified.
21 “Then all your people will be [uncompromisingly and consistently] righteous;They will possess the land forever,The branch of My planting,The work of My hands,That I may be glorified.
22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.
22 The least will become a thousand,the smallest a mighty nation.I am Yahweh;I will accomplish it quickly in its time.
22 The least of them will become a thousand, and the smallest one a mighty nation. "I am the LORD; When the time is right, I will do this swiftly."
22 “The smallest one will become a thousand (a clan),And the least one a mighty nation.I, the Lord, will quicken it in its [appointed] time.”
