New Light: The Birth Of A King

1 In earlier times he made the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali of small value, but after that he gave it glory, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

1 (a)But there will be no more (A)gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He (B)treated the (C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the (b)Gentiles.

1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

1 (a)Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.(A) But in the future He will bring honor to the Way of the Sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations.

1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in distress. Formerly, he brought contempt to the region of Zebulun and the region of Naphtali, but in the future he will have made glorious the way of the sea, the territory beyond the Jordan Galilee of the nations.

2 The people who went in the dark have seen a great light, and for those who were living in the land of the deepest night, the light is shining.

2 (c)(D)The people who walk in darknessWill see a great light; Those who live in a dark land,The light will shine on them.

2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

2 (b)The people walking in darknesshave seen a great light;(B)a light has dawnedon those living in the land of darkness.(C)

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; for those living in a land of deep darkness, a light has shined upon them.

3 You have made them very glad, increasing their joy. They are glad before you as men are glad in the time of getting in the grain, or when they make division of the goods taken in war.

3 (E)You shall multiply the nation,You (F)shall (d)increase (e)their gladness; They will be glad in Your presenceAs with the gladness (f)of harvest,As (g)(G)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

3 You have enlarged the nationand increased its joy.(c)(D)The people have rejoiced before Youas they rejoice at harvest timeand as they rejoice when dividing spoils.(E)

3 You have increased the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice in your presence as they rejoice at the harvest, as they are glad when they're dividing the spoils of war.

4 For by your hand the yoke on his neck and the rod on his back, even the rod of his cruel master, have been broken, as in the day of Midian.

4 For (H)You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,The rod of their (I)oppressor, as (h)at the battle of (J)Midian.

4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

4 For You have shattered their oppressive yoke(F)and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as You did on the day of Midian.(G)

4 Now as to the yoke that has been his burden, and the bar laid on his shoulder the rod of his oppressor you have broken it as on the day of Midian.

5 For every boot of the man of war with his sounding step, and the clothing rolled in blood, will be for burning, food for the fire.

5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

5 For the trampling boot of battleand the bloodied garments of warwill be burned as fuel for the fire.

5 For every boot of the tramping soldier in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be used for burning as fuel for a fire.

6 For to us a child has come, to us a son is given; and the government has been placed in his hands; and he has been named Wise Guide, Strong God, Father for ever, Prince of Peace.

6 For a (K)child will be born to us, a (L)son will be given to us;And the (M)government will (i)rest (N)on His shoulders;And His name will be called (O)Wonderful Counselor, (P)Mighty God,Eternal (Q)Father, Prince of (R)Peace.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

6 For a child will be born for us,a son will be given to us,(H)and the government will be on His shoulders.(I)He will be namedWonderful Counselor,(J) Mighty God,(K)Eternal Father,(L) Prince of Peace.(M)

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his rule and of peace there will be no end, on the seat of David, and in his kingdom; to make it strong, supporting it with wise decision and righteousness, now and for ever. By the fixed purpose of the Lord of armies this will be done.

7 There will be (S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,On the (T)throne of David and over his kingdom,To establish it and to uphold it with (U)justice and righteousnessFrom then on and forevermore.(V)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

7 The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.(N)He will reign on the throne of Davidand over his kingdom,to establish and sustain itwith justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.(O)

7 Of the growth of his government and peace there will be no end. He will rule over his kingdom, sitting on the throne of David, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will accomplish this.

Yahweh's Anger Against Arrogance

8 The Lord has sent a word to Jacob, and it has come on Israel;

8 The Lord sends a (j)message against Jacob,And it falls on Israel.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

8 The Lord sent a message against Jacob;it came against Israel.

8 "The LORD has sent a plague against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel;

9 And all the people will have experience of it, even Ephraim and the men of Samaria, who say in the pride of their uplifted hearts,

9 And all the people know it,That is, (W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,Asserting in pride and in (X)arrogance of heart:

9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,

9 All the people—Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria(P)—will know it.They will say with pride and arrogance:

9 and all of the people were evil Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria saying proudly with arrogant hearts:

10 The bricks have come down, but we will put up buildings of cut stone in their place: the sycamores are cut down, but they will be changed to cedars.

10 “The bricks have fallen down,But we will (Y)rebuild with smooth stones; The sycamores have been cut down,But we will replace them with cedars.”

10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.

10 “The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with cut stones;the sycamores have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”

10 "The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamore trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.'

11 For this cause the Lord has made strong the haters of Israel, driving them on to make war against him;

11 Therefore the Lord raises against them adversaries from (Z)RezinAnd spurs their enemies on,

11 Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;

11 The Lord has raised up Rezin’s adversaries against himand stirred up his enemies.

11 But the LORD has raised adversaries from Rezin against him, and he stirs up his enemies

12 Aram on the east, and the Philistines on the west, who have come against Israel with open mouths. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

12 The Arameans on the east and the (AA)Philistines on the west; And they (AB)devour Israel with (k)gaping jaws.(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.

12 The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

12 Aram from the east and Philistia from the westhave consumed Israel with open mouths. In all this, His anger is not removed, and His hand is still raised to strike.(Q)

12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west and they devour Israel with open mouths! "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike."

13 But the heart of the people was not turned to him who sent punishment on them, and they made no prayer to the Lord of armies.

13 Yet the people (AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,Nor do they (AE)seek the Lord of hosts.

13 For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.

13 The people did not turn to Him who struck them;they did not seek the Lord of Hosts.

13 "But the people have not returned to rely on him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

14 For this cause the Lord took away from Israel head and tail, high and low, in one day.

14 So the Lord cuts off (AF)head and tail from Israel,Both palm branch and bulrush (AG)in a single day.

14 Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

14 So the Lord cut off Israel’s head and tail,(R)palm branch and reed in a single day.

14 So the LORD has cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in a single day

15 The man who is honoured and responsible is the head, and the prophet who gives false teaching is the tail.

15 The head is (AH)the elder and honorable man,And the prophet who teaches (AI)falsehood is the tail.

15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

15 The head is the elder, the honored one;(S)the tail is the prophet, the lying teacher.(T)

15 the elder and the dignitary is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.

16 For the guides of this people are the cause of their wandering from the right way, and those who are guided by them come to destruction.

16 (AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray; And those who are guided by them are (l)brought to confusion.

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

16 The leaders of the people mislead them, and those they mislead are swallowed up.(d)

16 For those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.

17 For this cause the Lord will have no pleasure in their young men, and no pity on their widows and the children without fathers: for they are all haters of God and evil-doers, and foolish words come from every mouth. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

17 Therefore the Lord does (AK)not take pleasure in their young men,(AL)Nor does He have pity on their (m)orphans or their widows; For every one of them is (AM)godless and an (AN)evildoer,And every (AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.

17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

17 Therefore the Lord does not rejoiceover(e) Israel’s young menand has no compassionon its fatherless and widows, for everyone is a godless evildoer,(U)and every mouth speaks folly. In all this, His anger is not removed, and His hand is still raised to strike.

17 Therefore the Lord does not have pity on their young men, and has no compassion on their orphans and widows, because each of them was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth spoke folly. "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike.

18 For evil was burning like a fire; the blackberries and thorns were burned up; the thick woods took fire, rolling up in dark clouds of smoke.

18 (AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;It consumes briars and thorns; It even sets the thickets of the forest aflameAnd they roll upward in a column of smoke.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

18 For wickedness burns like a fire(V)that consumes thorns and briersand kindles the forest thicketsso that they go up in a column of smoke.

18 "For wickedness has burned like a blaze that consumes briers and thorns; it sets thickets of the forest on fire, and skyward they swirl in a column of smoke.

19 The land was dark with the wrath of the Lord of armies: the people were like those who take men's flesh for food.

19 By the (AR)fury of the Lord of hosts the (AS)land is burned up,And the (AT)people are like fuel for the fire;No (AU)man spares his brother.

19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

19 The land is scorchedby the wrath of the Lord of Hosts, and the people are like fuel for the fire.(W)No one has compassion on his brother.(X)

19 From the wrath of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies the land has been scorched, and the people have become like fuel for the fire; no one will spare his neighbor.

20 On the right a man was cutting off bits and was still in need; on the left a man took a meal but had not enough; no man had pity on his brother; every man was making a meal of the flesh of his neighbour.

20 (n)They slice off what is on the right hand but still are (AV)hungry,And (o)they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied; Each of them eats the (AW)flesh of his own arm.

20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

20 They carve meat on the right, but they are still hungry;(Y)they have eaten on the left, but they are still not satisfied. Each one eats the flesh of his own arm.(Z)

20 They cut meat on the right, but they're still hungry, and they devour also on the left, but they're not satisfied; each devours the flesh of his own children.

21 Manasseh was making a meal of Ephraim, and Ephraim of Manasseh; and together they were attacking Judah. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,(AX)And together they are against Judah.(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.

21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

21 Manasseh is with Ephraim, and Ephraim with Manasseh;together, both are against Judah.(AA)In all this, His anger is not removed, and His hand is still raised to strike.(AB) >

21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh; together they are against Judah. "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike."
