Subject Yourselves To God

1 Whence come wars and whence come battles within you? are they not from thence, from your pleasures warring in your members?

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

1 (a)What is the source of quarrels and (A)conflicts among you? (b)Is not the source your pleasures that wage (B)war in your members?

1 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings(A) that are at war within you?(a)

1 Where do those fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your selfish desires that are at war in your bodies, don't they?

2 You lust, and you have not: you murder, and you strive, and you are not able to obtain: you fight and you war; and have not, because you do not ask:

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

2 You lust and do not have; so you (C)commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.

2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask.

2 You want something but do not get it, so you commit murder. You covet something but cannot obtain it, so you quarrel and fight. You do not get things because you do not ask for them!

3 you ask, and you receive not, because you ask wickedly, that you may expend it in your pleasures.

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

3 You ask and (D)do not receive, because you ask (c)with wrong motives, so that you may spend it (d)on your pleasures.

3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your evil desires.(B)

3 You ask for something but do not get it because you ask for it for the wrong reason for your own pleasure.

4 O adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity to God? Whosoever therefore may wish to be the friend of the world renders himself the enemy of God.

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

4 You (E)adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with (F)the world is (G)hostility toward God? (H)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

4 Adulteresses!(b)(c) Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.(C)

4 You adulterers! Don't you know that friendship with the world means hostility with God? So whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God.

5 Whether do you think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit who dwells in us fights against envy?

5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

5 Or do you think that the Scripture (I)speaks to no purpose: “(e)He (f)jealously desires (J)the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?

5 Or do you think it’s without reason the Scripture says that the Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously?(d)(D)

5 Or do you think the Scripture means nothing when it says that the Spirit that God caused to live in us jealously yearns for us?

6 and he gives more grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

6 But (K)He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “(L)God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

6 But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says:God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.(E)(e)

6 But he gives all the more grace. And so he says, "God opposes the arrogant but gives grace to the humble."

7 Therefore draw nigh unto God; and resist the devil, and he will flee from you:

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

7 (M)Submit therefore to God. (N)Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

7 Therefore, submit to God. But resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.(F)

7 Therefore, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you.

8 draw nigh unto God, and he draws nigh unto you. Purify your hands, ye sinners; and cleanse your hearts, ye double-minded.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

8 (O)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (P)Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and (Q)purify your hearts, you (R)double-minded.

8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people!(G)

8 Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

9 Weep, and mourn, lament: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.

9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

9 (S)Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.

9 Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow.(H)

9 Be miserable, mourn, and cry. Let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom.

10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will raise you up.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

10 (T)Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

10 Humble yourselves in the Lord's presence, and he will exalt you.

Warning Against Judging One Another

11 Do not calumniate one another, brethren: the one speaking against his brother, and judging his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law: if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

11 (U)Do not speak against one another, (V)brethren. He who speaks against a brother or (W)judges his brother, speaks against (X)the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not (Y)a doer of the law but a judge of it.

11 Don’t criticize one another, brothers. He who criticizes a brother or judges his brother criticizes the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.(I)

11 Do not criticize each other, brothers. Whoever makes it his habit to criticize his brother or to judge his brother is judging the Law and condemning the Law. But if you condemn the Law, you are not a practicer of the Law but its judge.

12 There is one lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy: but who are you, the one judging your neighbor.

12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

12 There is only one (Z)Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is (AA)able to save and to destroy; but (AB)who are you who judge your neighbor?

12 There is one lawgiver and judge(f) who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?(J)

12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge the one who can save and destroy. So who are you to judge your neighbor?

Arrogant Boasting About The Future

13 Come now, ye who are saying, To-day or to-morrow we will go into that city, and abide there a year, and trade and accumulate:

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

13 (AC)Come now, you who say, “(AD)Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”(K)

13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money."

14 whosoever do not know that which belongs to the morrow: for what is your life? For you are a vapor, appearing for a moment, and then vanishing away;

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

14 (g)Yet you do not know (h)what your life will be like tomorrow. (AE)You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

14 You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.(L)

14 You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

15 on the contrary you should say, If the Lord will, and we live, we will indeed do this, or that.

15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

15 (i)Instead, you ought to say, “(AF)If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

15 Instead you should say, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that."

16 But you are now boasting in your arrogances: all such boasting is wicked.

16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

16 But as it is, you boast in your (j)arrogance; (AG)all such boasting is evil.

16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.(M)

16 But you boast about your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil.

17 Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

17 Therefore, (AH)to one who knows the (k)right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

17 So it is a sin for the person who knows to do what is good and doesn’t do it.(N)

17 Therefore, anyone who knows what is right but fails to do it is guilty of sin.
