Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;
When Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they
fled and went out of the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the gate between the two walls; and he went out toward the Arabah.
2 Kings 25:4
Then the city was broken into, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls beside the king’s garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And they went by way of the Arabah.
But some of the
poorest people who had nothing, Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard left behind in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at that time.
“Son of man, they who
live in these waste places in the land of Israel are saying, ‘ Abraham was only one, yet he possessed the land; so to us who are many the land has been given as a possession.’
All the people of the land shall give to this offering for the prince in Israel.
