Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.

Then Abraham answered and said: Indeed now, I who am only dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to Jehovah:

I am less than nothing in comparison with all your love and your faithfulness to me your servant. I only had a stick in my hand when I traveled across Jordan. Now I have become two armies.

After David had everyone counted, he felt guilty and told Jehovah: What I did was stupid and terribly wrong. Jehovah, please forgive me.

Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down under a broom plant and wished he would die. It is just too much, Jehovah, he prayed. Take away my life. I could just as well be dead.

I said, O my God, shame keeps me from lifting up my face (praying) to you (being in your presence), my God: for our sins have increased higher than our heads and our evil-doing has come up to heaven.

You have been in the right in everything that happened to us. You have been true to us, but we have done evil!

I have sinned against you, especially you. I have done what you consider evil in your sight. So you hand down justice when you speak, and you are blameless when you judge.

Woe to me! I cried. I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips (a sinner) and I live among a people of unclean (filthy) lips (speech) (language). My eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of Hosts.

We are all like sheep. We have gone astray! Each of us has turned to his own way. Jehovah has caused the iniquity (sin) of all of us to be laid on him.

All of us have become unclean, and all our righteous acts are like permanently stained rags. All of us wither like leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind.

We have sinned. We have dealt perversely. We have acted wickedly and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances.

When Simon Peter saw this he fell down at Jesus' knees. He said: Depart from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

I will go to my father and say: 'Father I have sinned against God and against you.

But the tax collector stood far away and would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven. He beat his breast, saying: God, be merciful to me a sinner.

Faithful is the saying, and worthy of acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am foremost.

What

Yet you will plunge me into the pit, and my own clothes will abhor me.

O that a man might plead with God As a man with his neighbor!

I would present my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

I would give him an account of all my steps. Like a prince I would approach him.

Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

The nobles refrained from talking, and laid their hands on their mouths.

They told him: Be quiet. Do not say a word. Come with us and be our priest and adviser. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?

I remained speechless. I did not open my mouth because you have done this.

If you foolishly exalted yourself, or if you thought evil, lay your hand upon your mouth.

The nations will see and be ashamed of all their might! They will cover their mouth with their hand and their ears will be deaf.

Jehovah is in his Holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.

Be silent, all flesh, before Jehovah, for he is aroused out of his holy dwelling.

Abraham then said: Do not be angry, and let me speak. Suppose thirty should be found there? God replied: I will not do it if I find thirty there.

If it remains unchanged and does not spread, it is only the scar left from the boil. The priest will pronounce you ritually clean.

How I wish that God would speak, that he would open his lips against you

I know what you know. I am not inferior to you!
