but John made them this answer, a man can have no authority, but what he derives from heaven.

Jesus said to them, if you were blind, you would be excusable; but since you own that you see, you stand convicted.

if I had not appear'd, and inform'd them, they would have been innocent: but now they have no excuse for their sin.
