The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Moreover, the one who
blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.
But the prophet who speaks a word
presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’
For this reason therefore
the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
Jesus said to them,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
I and the Father are one.”
Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”
He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
