Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

but Peter denied this too, and immediately the cock crew.

soon after they that stood by coming up, said to Peter, certainly you are one of them, for thy speech bewrays thee.

as many as I love, I rebuke and chastise: be warm therefore with zeal, and repent.

Grieved

when Peter remembred what Jesus had said to him, "before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." and he went out, and wept bitterly.

and the cock crowed for the second time. then Peter calling to mind that expression of Jesus, "before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice," he cover'd his head and wept.

whereupon the Lord turned about, and look'd upon Peter. then Peter remembred what the Lord had said to him, "before the cock-crowing you shall deny me thrice."

for out of much affliction and anguish of heart, I wrote to you with many tears; not to make you uneasy, but to make you sensible of the overflowing tenderness which I have for you.

For tho' I was sorry my letter gave you some uneasiness, I do not repent of it, perceiving, that the uneasiness you had from that letter, did not dwell upon your minds.

grieve not the holy spirit of God, by whom you are sealed against the day of deliverance:

This it is that fills you with joy, notwithstanding the various tryals, which still necessarily afflict you,

but Jesus did not trust his person with them, because he knew them all.

now we are convinc'd that you know all our difficulties, and have no occasion that any man should propose them to you: by this we believe that you were sent from God.

but Jesus who knew every thing that should happen to him, advanc'd, and said to them, who do you look for?

saying, "thou Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show us which of these two thou hast chosen,

God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us:

I will strike her children dead; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searcheth the reins and the heart: and I will give to every one of you according to your works.

Thou knowest that

So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me more than these do? yes, Lord, said he, you know that I love you. Jesus reply'd, feed my lambs.

for this is to me matter of glorying, the testimony of my conscience, that without artifice, and with religious sincerity, not by worldly wisdom, but by God's favourable assistance I have behaved my self towards all men, but more particularly to you.
