Jonah 3

² “Go to Nineveh the great city and declare to it the message which I am going to tell you.”

² “Arise, go to ^(A)Nineveh the great city and ^(B)proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”

² Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

² “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh^(B) and preach^(C) the message that I tell you.”

² "Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you."

⁴ Then on the first day’s walk, Jonah ^(b)began to go through the city, and he called out and said, “Forty days more [remain] and [then] Nineveh will be overthrown!”

⁴ Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he ^(D)cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”

⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

⁴ Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed,^(E) “In 40 days Nineveh will be demolished!”

⁴ Now Nineveh was a very large city, requiring a three-day journey to cross through it. As Jonah started into the city on the first day's journey, he proclaimed the message, "40 days more and Nineveh will be overthrown!"

⁶ When word reached the king of Nineveh [of Jonah’s message from God], he rose from his throne, took off his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in the dust [in repentance].

⁶ When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, ^(F)covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ^(b)ashes.

⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

⁶ When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth,^(G) and sat in ashes.

⁶ When the message reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, removed his royal garments, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat down in ashes.

⁸ But both man and animal must be covered with sackcloth; and every one is to call on God earnestly and forcefully that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence that is in his hands.

⁸ But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let ^(c)men ^(H)call on God earnestly that each may ^(I)turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in ^(d)his hands.

⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

⁸ Furthermore, both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God.^(I) Each must turn from his evil ways^(J) and from the violence^(d) he is doing.^(e)

⁸ No man or animal, herd or flock, is to taste anything, graze, or drink water. Instead, let both man and animal clothe themselves with sackcloth and cry out to God forcefully. Let every person turn from his evil ways and from his tendency to do violence.

¹⁰ When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God [had compassion and] relented concerning the disaster which He had declared that He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

¹⁰ When God saw their deeds, that they ^(K)turned from their wicked way, then ^(L)God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would ^(e)bring upon them. And He did not do it.

¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

¹⁰ Then God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways^(M)—so God relented from the disaster^(N) He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.

¹⁰ God took note of what they did that they turned from their evil ways. Because God relented concerning the trouble about which he had warned them, he did not carry it out.
