Unconquered Lands

1 When Joshua had grown old, having lived many years, the LORD told him, "You are old and have lived many years, but much of the land still remains to be possessed.

1 Now (A)Joshua was old and advanced in years when the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and very much of the land remains to be possessed.

1 Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

3 From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:

3 from the Shihor east of Egypt to the border of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as the Avvites

3 from the Shihor [waterway] which is east of Egypt [at the southern end of Canaan], northward to the border of Ekron (all of it regarded as Canaanite); the five rulers of the Philistines: the Gazite, Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, the Ekronite; and the (c)Avvite

4 "To the south, there remains to be conquered all the territory held by the Canaanites, Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites,

4 (b)to the south, all the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as (D)Aphek, to the border of the (E)Amorite;

4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:

4 in the south; all the land of the Canaanites: from Arah of the Sidonians to Aphek and as far as the border of the Amorites;

4 in the south, all the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorite;

5 including the territory of the Gebalites and all of Lebanon facing the east from Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon as far as Lebo-hamath,

5 and the land of the (F)Gebalite, and all of Lebanon, toward the (c)east, (G)from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon as far as (d)Lebo-hamath.

5 And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

5 the land of the Gebalites;(C) and all Lebanon east from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath(a)(D)

5 and the land of the Gebalite, and all Lebanon, toward (d)the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

6 and all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, including all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out in the presence of the Israelis.

6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon as far as (H)Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians, I will (e)drive them out from before the sons of Israel; (I)only allot it to Israel for an inheritance as I have commanded you.

6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

6 all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim,(E) all the Sidonians.I will drive them out before the Israelites, only distribute the land as an inheritance for Israel, as I have commanded you.

6 As for all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians, I will drive them out before Israel; only allot the land to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you.

7 You only have to allocate the land as an inheritance, just as I commanded you."

7 Now therefore, apportion this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

7 Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

7 So now, divide this land [west of the Jordan] as an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East Of The Jordan

8 The descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad, along with the other half-tribe of Manasseh, received their inherited portion that Moses the servant of the LORD had given them to the east beyond the Jordan River.

8 With (f)the other half-tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them (J)beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the Lord gave to them;

8 With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;

8 With the other half of the tribe, the Reubenites and Gadites had received the inheritance Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the Lord’s servant had given them:(F)

8 With the other half-tribe [of Manasseh], the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan eastward, just as Moses the servant of the Lord gave to them;

9 Specifically included was from Aroer on the banks of the Wadi Arnon, and the town that lies in the middle of the valley, including all the plains from Medeba to Dibon,

9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba, as far as Dibon;

9 From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

9 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley,(G) all the Medeba plateau as far as Dibon,

9 from Aroer on the edge of the valley of the [river] Arnon, and the city in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba, as far as Dibon;

10 all the cities pertaining to King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonite territory,

10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the sons of Ammon;

10 And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the Ammonites;

10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;

11 Gilead and the region belonging to the descendants of Geshur and Maacath, including all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah.

11 and (K)Gilead, and the (g)territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah;

11 And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah;

11 also Gilead(H) and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah—

11 and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah;

12 Also included was the entire kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. (He was the sole survivor left of the Rephaim.) Although Moses had defeated these people and driven them out,

12 all the kingdom of (L)Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses (M)struck them and dispossessed them.

12 All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.

12 the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei; he was one of the remaining Rephaim.Moses struck them down and drove them out,(I)

12 the entire kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim [giants]—for Moses had struck them and dispossessed them.

13 the Israelis did not drive out the descendants of Geshur or the descendants of Maacath Geshur and Maacath live within the territory of Israel to this day.

13 But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites or the Maacathites; for Geshur and Maacath live among Israel until this day.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

13 but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites and Maacathites.(J) So Geshur and Maacath live in Israel to this day.(K)

13 But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites or the Maacathites; for Geshur and Maacath live among Israel to this day.

An Allotment For The Tribe Of Levi

14 Moses allotted no inheritance solely to the tribe of Levi. As he had mentioned to them, the offerings by fire to the LORD God of Israel are their inheritance.

14 (N)Only to the tribe of Levi he did not give an inheritance; the offerings by fire to the Lord, the God of Israel, are (h)their inheritance, as He spoke to him.

14 Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

14 He did not give any inheritance to the tribe of Levi. This was its inheritance, just as He had promised: the offerings made by fire to the Lord, the God of Israel.(L)

14 It was only to the tribe of Levi that Moses gave no [territory as an] inheritance; the offerings by fire to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as He told him.

Reuben's Inheritance

15 Moses allocated territory to the tribe of the descendants of Reuben according to their tribes.

15 So Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their families.

15 And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families.

15 To the tribe of the Reubenites by their clans, Moses gave

15 So Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their families.

16 Their allocation was from the border of Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley (including the city that is located in the valley, as well as the entire plain next to Medeba),

16 Their (i)territory was (O)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley and all the plain by Medeba;

16 And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba;

16 this as their territory:From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau as far as(b) Medeba,

16 Their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the [river] Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the valley and all the plain by Medeba;

17 Heshbon and all of its cities that are on the plain, including Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,

17 Heshbon, and all its cities which are on the plain: Dibon and Bamoth-baal and Beth-baal-meon,

17 Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

17 with Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau—Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,

17 with Heshbon, and all its cities which are on the plain: Dibon and Bamoth-baal and Beth-baal-meon,

18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

18 and (P)Jahaz and Kedemoth and Mephaath,

18 And Jahazah, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,(M)

18 and Jahaz and Kedemoth and Mephaath,

19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,

19 and (Q)Kiriathaim and Sibmah and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley,

19 And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley,

19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,(N)

19 and Kiriathaim and Sibmah and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley,

20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth-jeshimoth,

20 and Beth-peor and the slopes of Pisgah and Beth-jeshimoth,

20 And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—

20 and Beth-peor and the slopes of Pisgah and Beth-jeshimoth,

21 all of the cities of the plain, the entire kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites, who used to reign in Heshbon and whom Moses attacked, along with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, nobles of Sihon who lived in the land.

21 even all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, (R)Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.

21 And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.

21 all the cities of the plateau, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had killed him and the chiefs of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.(O)

21 even all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck down along with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.

22 The Israelis also killed Beor's son Balaam, the occult practitioner, executing him with a sword as one of those killed.

22 The sons of Israel also killed (S)Balaam the son of Beor, the diviner, with the sword among the rest of their slain.

22 Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

22 Along with those the Israelites put to death, they also killed the diviner, Balaam son of Beor, with the sword.

22 The sons of Israel also killed Balaam the son of Beor, the diviner (soothsayer), with the sword among [the rest of] their slain.(A)

23 The border of the descendants of Reuben was the Jordan River and its banks. This was the inheritance belonging to the descendants of Reuben, divided according to their families, cities, and villages.

23 The border of the sons of Reuben was the (j)Jordan. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

23 And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

23 The border of the Reubenites was the Jordan and its plain. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites by their clans, with the cities and their villages.

23 The border of the sons of Reuben was the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, with their cities and villages.

Gad's Inheritance

24 Moses also allocated territory to the tribe of Gad, that is, to the descendants of Gad, according to their families.

24 Moses also gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad, according to their families.

24 And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

24 To the tribe of the Gadites by their clans, Moses gave

25 Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer which is located near Rabbah,

25 Their territory was (T)Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as Aroer which is before Rabbah;

25 And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

25 this as their territory:Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites to Aroer, near Rabbah;

25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as Aroer east of Rabbah;

26 from Heshbon as far as Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, from Mahanaim as far as the border of Debir,

26 and from Heshbon as far as Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim as far as the border of (k)Debir;

26 And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

26 from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;(c)

26 and from Heshbon as far as Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim as far as the border of Debir;

27 the valley containing Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of King Sihon of Heshbon, with the Jordan River as its border as far as the southern end of the Sea of Galilee beyond the Jordan River to the east.

27 and in the valley, Beth-haram and Beth-nimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan (l)as a border, as far as the lower end of the Sea of (m)(U)Chinnereth beyond the Jordan to the east.

27 And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.

27 in the valley:(d) Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon—the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon. Their land also included the Jordan and its territory as far as the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth(e) on the east side of the Jordan.(f)

27 and in the valley, Beth-haram and Beth-nimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as a border, as far as the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth (Galilee) east of the Jordan.

28 This was the inheritance belonging to the descendants of Gad according to their tribes, cities, and villages.

The Half-Tribe Of Manasseh's Inheritance

29 Moses also allocated territory to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, for the half-tribe of the descendants of Manasseh according to their tribes.

29 Moses also gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; and it was for the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families.

29 And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families.

29 And to half the tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the tribe of Manasseh’s descendants by their clans, Moses gave

29 Moses also gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; and it was for the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families.

30 Their territory extended from Mahanaim to include all of Bashan, all of the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, all of the 60 towns of Jair there in Bashan,

30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all (V)the (n)towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities;

30 And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

30 this as their territory:From Mahanaim through all Bashan—all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, including all of Jair’s Villages(g)(P) that are in Bashan—60 cities.

30 Their region extended from Mahanaim, all Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities;

31 half of Gilead, including Ashtaroth and Edrei. The cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan went to half of the descendants of Manasseh's son Machir, according to their tribes.

31 also half of Gilead, with (W)Ashtaroth and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families.

31 And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

31 But half of Gilead, and Og’s royal cities in Bashan—Ashtaroth and Edrei—are for the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, that is, half the descendants of Machir by their clans.

31 also half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families (clans).

32 These were the allotments that Moses apportioned for an inheritance in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan River east of Jericho.

32 These are the territories which Moses apportioned for an inheritance in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho to the east.

32 These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

33 Moses allotted no inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The LORD God of Israel is their inheritance, as he promised them.
