There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.
Joseph named the firstborn
Manasseh, “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.”
Now to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him.
Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.”
But he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the
unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; to him belongs the right of the firstborn.

Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.
