The Israelites Are Circumcised

1 And it will be as all the kings of the Amorites heard which were beyond Jordan to the sea, and all the kings of the Canaanites which were upon the sea, that Jehovah dried up the water of Jordan from before the sons of Israel till we passed over, and their heart will melt; and there was no more spirit in them from the face of the sons of Israel.

1 Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the (A)Canaanites who were by the sea, (B)heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until (a)they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel.

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

1 When all the Amorite kings across the Jordan to the west and all the Canaanite kings near the sea(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over,(B) they lost heart and their courage failed(a) because of the Israelites.

1 All the Amorite kings who lived across the Jordan River to the west and all the Canaanite kings by the Mediterranean Sea became discouraged as soon as they heard that the LORD had dried up the water of the Jordan River for the people of Israel until they had crossed it. They no longer had a will to fight because of the people of Israel.

A New Generation Is Circumcised

2 In that time Jehovah said to Joshua, Make to thee swords of stone, and turning back, circumcise the sons of Israel the second time

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make for yourself (C)flint knives and circumcise again the sons of Israel the second time.”

2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelite men again.”(C)

2 At that time the LORD told Joshua, "Make for yourselves some flint knives and circumcise the Israelis who haven't been circumcised yet."

3 And Joshua will make to him swords of stone and will circumcise the sons of Israel at the hill of uncircumcisions:

3 So Joshua made himself flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at (b)Gibeath-haaraloth.

3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelite men at Gibeath-haaraloth.(b)

3 So Joshua made some flint knives and circumcised the Israelis at Gibeath-haaraloth.

4 And this the reason that Joshua circumcised: all the people came forth out of Egypt, the males, all the men of war, died in the desert in the way, in their coming out of Egypt

4 This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: (D)all the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way after they came out of Egypt.

4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

4 This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: All the people who came out of Egypt who were males—all the men of war—had died in the wilderness along the way after they had come out of Egypt.

4 Joshua circumcised them because all of the males among the people who came out of Egypt that is, all the warriors had died during their journey through the wilderness following their departure from Egypt.

5 For all the people coming out were circumcised; and all the people born in the desert in the way, in their coming out of Egypt, were not circumcised.

5 For all the people who came out were circumcised, but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

5 Though all the people who came out were circumcised, none of the people born in the wilderness along the way were circumcised after they had come out of Egypt.

5 Although everyone who had left Egypt had been circumcised, nevertheless all the people born during the journey after their departure from Egypt had not been circumcised.

6 For forty years the sons of Israel went in the desert till all the people of the men of war coming out of Egypt were finished, who heard not to the voice of Jehovah: which Jehovah sware to them, not for them to see the land which Jehovah sware to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing milk and honey.

6 For the sons of Israel walked (E)forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, that is, the men of war who came out of Egypt, (c)perished because they did not listen to the voice of the Lord, (F)to whom the Lord had sworn that He would not let them see the land which the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

6 For the Israelites wandered in the wilderness 40 years until all the nation’s men of war who came out of Egypt had died off because they did not obey the Lord.(D) So the Lord vowed never to let them see the land He had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.(E)

6 The Israelis traveled 40 years in the wilderness until the entire nation that is, the warriors who had departed from Egypt had perished because they hadn't listened to the voice of the LORD. The LORD had promised them that he would not let them see the land that he had sworn to give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

7 And their sons he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised, for they were uncircumcised, for they circumcised them not in the way.

7 Their children whom He raised up in their place, Joshua (d)circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along the way.

7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

7 Joshua raised up their sons in their place; it was these he circumcised. They were still uncircumcised, since they had not been circumcised along the way.

7 As a result, it was their descendants, whom he raised up to take their place, that Joshua circumcised. They had remained uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised during their journey.

8 And it shall be as all the people finished to be circumcised, and they dwelt in their place in the camp till they revived.

8 Now when they had finished circumcising all the nation, they remained in their places in the camp until they were (e)healed.

8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

8 After the entire nation had been circumcised, they stayed where they were in the camp until they recovered.(F)

8 When the circumcision of the entire nation was complete, they remained in their places within the camp until they were healed.

9 And Jehovah will say to Joshua, This day I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. And he will call the name of that place Gilgal till this day.

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away (G)the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the name of that place is called (f)Gilgal to this day.

9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

9 The Lord then said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from you.” Therefore, that place is called Gilgal(c) to this day.(G)

9 Then the LORD told Joshua, "Today I have rolled the disgrace of Egypt away from you." That's why that place is called "Gilgal" to this day.

Food From The Land

10 And the sons of Israel will encamp in Gilgal, and they will do the passover in the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, in the plain of Jericho.

10 While the sons of Israel camped at Gilgal (H)they observed the Passover on the evening of the (I)fourteenth day of the month on the desert plains of Jericho.

10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

10 While the Israelites camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they kept the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month.(d)

10 While the Israelis remained encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they observed the Passover during the evening of the fourteenth day of the month.

11 And they will eat from the grain of the land from the morrow of the passover, unleavened and roasted in the self-same day.

11 On the (g)day after the Passover, on (h)that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

11 The day after Passover they ate unleavened bread and roasted grain from the produce of the land.

11 On the day following Passover on that exact day they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.

12 And the manna will cease from the morrow in their eating from the grain of the land; and manna was no more to the sons of Israel; and they will eat from the produce of the land of Canaan in that year.

12 (J)The manna ceased on the (i)day after they had eaten some of the produce of the land, so that the sons of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate some of the yield of the land of Canaan during that year.

12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

12 And the day after they ate from the produce of the land, the manna ceased.(H) Since there was no more manna for the Israelites, they ate from the crops of the land of Canaan that year.

12 The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land. Since the Israelis no longer received manna, they ate crops from the land of Canaan that year.

Commander Of The Lord's Army

13 And it will be in Joshua's being by Jericho, and he will lift up his eyes and will see, and behold, a man standing before him and his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua will go to him and say to him, Art thou for us or for our adversaries?

13 Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, (K)a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?”

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

13 When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand.(I) Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”

13 Now it happened that while Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and much to his amazement, he saw a man standing in front of him, holding a drawn sword in his hand! Joshua approached him and asked him, "Are you one of us, or are you with our enemies?"

14 And he will say, No; but I chief of the army of Jehovah come now. And Joshua will fall on his face to the earth and will worship him, and will say to him, What speaks my lord to his servant?

14 He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” And Joshua (L)fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?”

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as commander of the Lord’s army.”Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship(J) and asked Him, “What does my Lord want to say to His servant?”

14 "Neither," he answered. "I have come as commander of the LORD's Army." Joshua immediately fell on his face to the earth and worshipped, saying to him, "Lord, what do you have for your servant by way of command?"

15 And the captain of Jehovah's host will say to Joshua, Put off thy shoe from thy foot, for the place which thou standest upon it, it is holy: and Joshua will do so.

15 The captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, “(M)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

15 And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

15 The commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(K) And Joshua did so.

15 The commander of the LORD's Army replied to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from your feet, because the place where you're standing is holy." So Joshua did so.
