Israel Continues Its Conquest

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

1 Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel (A)inquired of the Lord, saying, “Who shall go up first for us (B)against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”

1 After the death of Joshua,(A) the Israelites inquired of the Lord,(B) “Who will be the first to fight for us against the Canaanites?”

1 Sometime after Joshua had died, the Israelis asked the LORD, "Who is to lead us against the Canaanites in our opening attack against them?"

2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

2 The Lord said, “(C)Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”

2 The Lord answered, “Judah(C) is to go.(D) I have handed the land over to him.”(E)

2 The LORD replied, "The tribe of Judah is to lead you. Look! I've given the land into their control."

3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my allotted portion, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your allotted portion. So Simeon went with him.

3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

3 Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into (a)the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and (b)I in turn will go with you into (c)the territory allotted you.” So Simeon went with him.

3 Judah said to his brother Simeon, “Come with me to my territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your territory.” So Simeon went with him.

3 But the tribe of Judah told the tribe of Simeon, the descendants of Judah's brother, "Come with us into our territory, and we'll both fight the Canaanites. In return, we'll go with you when you fight in your territory." So the army of the tribe of Simeon accompanied the army of the tribe of Judah.

Judah Attempts To Force Out The Canaanites

4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

4 Judah went up, and (D)the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they (d)defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

4 When Judah attacked, the Lord handed the Canaanites and Perizzites(F) over to them. They struck down 10,000 men in Bezek.(G)

4 When the army of the tribe of Judah went into battle, the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their control, and they defeated 10,000 men at Bezek.

5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

5 They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they (e)defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

5 They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought against him, and struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites.

5 They located Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his (f)thumbs and big toes.

6 When Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.(H)

6 Adoni-bezek ran off, but they pursued him, caught him, and amputated his thumbs and big toes.

7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered scraps under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

7 Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up scraps under my table; (E)as I have done, so God has repaid me.” So they brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.

7 Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps(a) under my table. God has repaid me for what I have done.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

7 Adoni-bezek used to brag, "Seventy kings without thumbs and big toes used to eat what was left under my table. God has repaid me for what I've done." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he later died there.

11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

11 Then (H)from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher).

11 From there they marched against the residents of Debir(L) (Debir was formerly named Kiriath-sepher).

11 The army of Judah then proceeded to attack the inhabitants of Debir, which used to be known as Kiriath-sepher.

12 And Caleb said, He that strikes Kiriathsepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.

12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

12 And Caleb said, “The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife.”

12 Caleb(M) said, “Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter Achsah(N) to him as a wife.”

12 Caleb announced, "I'll give my daughter Achsah in marriage to whomever leads the attack against Kiriath-sepher and captures it."

13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

13 (I)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.

13 So Othniel(O) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as his wife.

13 Othniel, Caleb's nephew through his younger brother Kenaz, captured the city, so Caleb awarded him his daughter Achsah in marriage.

14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she got down from her donkey; and Caleb said unto her, What do you want?

14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

14 Then (J)it came about when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from (h)her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What (i)do you want?”

14 When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel(c) to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her,(d) “What do you want?”

14 Later on, after she had arrived, she urged Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want for yourself?"

15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for you have given me the south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the (j)Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

15 She answered him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev,(P) give me springs of water also.” So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.(e)(Q)

15 "I want this blessing from you," she replied. "Since you've given me land in the Negev, give me water springs, too." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.

16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

16 The (k)descendants of (K)the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the (L)city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of (M)Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law,(R) had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms(f)(S) to the Wilderness of Judah, which was in the Negev of Arad.(T) They went to live among the people.

16 The descendants of the Kenites, the tribe from which Moses' father-in-law came, accompanied the descendants of Judah from the city of the palms to the Judean wilderness, which is in the desert area south of Arad, and lived with the people there.

17 Judah went with his brother Simeon, struck the Canaanites who were living in Zephath, and completely destroyed the town. So they named the town Hormah.(U)

17 The army of Judah accompanied the army of Simeon, Judah's brother, as they attacked the Canaanites who were living in Zephath, and they completely destroyed it. Then they renamed the city Hormah.

Israel Fails To Conquer The Land

19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

19 Now the Lord was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not (l)drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had (P)iron chariots.

19 The Lord was with(V) Judah and enabled them to take possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out(W) the people who were living in the valley because those people had iron chariots.(h)(X)

19 The LORD was with the army of Judah, and they captured the hill country, but did not expel the inhabitants of the valley because they were equipped with iron chariots.

20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled from there the three sons of Anak.

20 Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, (Q)as Moses had (m)promised; and he drove out from there (R)the three sons of Anak.

20 Judah gave Hebron to Caleb, just as Moses had promised.(Y) Then Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak(Z) who lived there.(i)

Benjamin's Failure

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

21 (S)But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the (T)Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

21 At the same time the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites have lived among the Benjaminites in Jerusalem to this day.(AA)

21 However, the descendants of Benjamin did not expel the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the descendants of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

Success Of The House Of Joseph

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

22 Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

22 The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with(AB) them.

22 Then the army of the tribe of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

23 The house of Joseph spied out Bethel ((U)now the name of the city was formerly Luz).

23 They sent spies to Bethel (the town was formerly named Luz(AC)).

23 The army of the tribe of Joseph scouted out Bethel, which had been formerly named Luz.

The Tribes Of Ephraim And Manasseh Conquer Bethel

24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray you, the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy.

24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

24 The spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city and (V)we will treat you kindly.”

24 The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, “Please show us how to get into town, and we will treat you well.”(AD)

24 The scouts observed a man coming out of the city and they promised him, "Please show us the entrance to the city and we'll deal kindly with you."

25 And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, (W)but they let the man and all his family go free.

25 When he showed them the way into the town, they put the town to the sword but released the man and his entire family.

25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they attacked the city with swords, but they let the man and his entire family escape.

26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is its name until this day.

26 The man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz (n)which is its name to this day.

26 Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name to this day.

26 So the man traveled to the land of the Hittites and built a city that he named "Luz," and it is called by that name to this day.

Failure Of The Other Tribes

27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

27 (X)But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so (Y)the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.

27 At that time Manasseh failed to take possession of Beth-shean(j)(AE) and its villages,(k) or Taanach(AF) and its villages, or the residents of Dor(AG) and its villages, or the residents of Ibleam(l)(AH) and its villages, or the residents of Megiddo(AI) and its villages; the Canaanites refused to leave(m) this land.(AJ)

27 The army of the tribe of Manasseh did not conquer Beth-shean and its villages, Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages. Instead, the Canaanites continued to live in that land.

28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out.

28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

28 It came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.

28 When Israel became stronger, they made the Canaanites serve as forced labor but never drove them out completely.(AK)

28 When Israel had grown strong, they subjected the Canaanites to conscripted labor and never did expel them completely.

29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

29 (Z)Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

29 At that time Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived among them in Gezer.(n)(AL)

29 The army of the tribe of Ephraim did not expel the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became forced laborers.

30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of (o)Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labor.

30 Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron or the residents of Nahalol,(AM) so the Canaanites lived among them and served as forced labor.

30 The army of the tribe of Zebulun did not expel the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but were subjected to conscripted labor.

31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob.

31 Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco(o) or of Sidon, or Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.

31 The army of the tribe of Asher did not expel the inhabitants of Acco nor the inhabitants of Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.

32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, because they failed to drive them out.

32 So the descendants of Asher lived among the Canaanites who continued to inhabit the land, because they did not expel them.

33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became forced laborers unto them.

33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh or the residents of Beth-anath. They lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, but the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served as their forced labor.

33 The army of the tribe of Naphtali did not expel the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and the inhabitants of Beth-anath. Instead, they lived among the Canaanites who inhabited the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were subjected to conscripted labor.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not allow them to come down to the valley:

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

34 Then the Amorites (p)forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley;

34 The Amorites(AN) forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to go down into the valley.

34 Later on, the Amorites forced the descendants of Dan into the hill country and did not permit them to come into the valleys of the hills.

35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became forced laborers.

35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

35 yet the Amorites persisted in (q)living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon and in Shaalbim; but when the (r)power of the house of Joseph (s)grew strong, they became forced labor.

35 The Amorites refused to leave(p) Har-heres, Aijalon,(AO) and Shaalbim. When the house of Joseph got the upper hand,(q) the Amorites(r) were made to serve as forced labor.

35 Furthermore, the Amorites continued to inhabit Mount Heres in Aijalon and Shaalbim. Eventually, however, after the tribe of Joseph had become strong, the Amorites were subjected to conscripted labor.

36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

36 The border of the Amorites ran from the (AA)ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.

36 The territory of the Amorites extended from the Ascent of Akrabbim,(AP) that is from Sela(AQ) upward.

36 The Amorite border extended upward from the Akrabbim Ascent, that is, from Sela.
