Israel Continues Its Conquest

11 Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired of the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"

11 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

11 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the Lord, "Who will be the first to fight for us against the Canaanites?"

11 Sometime after Joshua had died, the Israelis asked the LORD, "Who is to lead us against the Canaanites in our opening attack against them?"

11 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?

22 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."

22 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

22 The Lord answered, "Judah is to go. I have handed the land over to him."

22 The LORD replied, "The tribe of Judah is to lead you. Look! I've given the land into their control."

22 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

33 Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I in turn will go with you into the territory allotted you." So Simeon went with him.

33 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

33 Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Come with me to my territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your territory." So Simeon went with him.

33 But the tribe of Judah told the tribe of Simeon, the descendants of Judah's brother, "Come with us into our territory, and we'll both fight the Canaanites. In return, we'll go with you when you fight in your territory." So the army of the tribe of Simeon accompanied the army of the tribe of Judah.

33 And Judah [the tribe] said to [the tribe of] Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my allotted territory, so that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your territory. So Simeon went with him.

Judah Attempts To Force Out The Canaanites

44 Judah went up, and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

44 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

44 When Judah attacked, the Lord handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They struck down 10,000 men in Bezek.

44 When the army of the tribe of Judah went into battle, the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their control, and they defeated 10,000 men at Bezek.

44 Then Judah went up and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they smote 10,000 of them in Bezek.

55 They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

55 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

55 They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought against him, and struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites.

55 They located Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

55 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

66 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

66 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

66 When Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

66 Adoni-bezek ran off, but they pursued him, caught him, and amputated his thumbs and big toes.

66 Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.

77 Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." So they brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.

77 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

77 Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up [scraps] under my table. God has repaid me for what I have done." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

77 Adoni-bezek used to brag, "Seventy kings without thumbs and big toes used to eat what was left under my table. God has repaid me for what I've done." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he later died there.

77 Adoni-bezek said, Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off had to gather their food under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

99 Later, the army of Judah left Jerusalem to attack the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, the Negev, and the Shephelah.

99 Afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the South (the Negeb), and in the lowland.

1010 So Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba); and they struck Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

1010 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

1111 Then from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher).

1111 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

1111 From there they marched against the residents of Debir (Debir was formerly named Kiriath-sepher).

1111 The army of Judah then proceeded to attack the inhabitants of Debir, which used to be known as Kiriath-sepher.

1111 From there [Judah] went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir before was Kiriath-sepher [city of books and scribes].

1212 And Caleb said, "The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife."

1212 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

1212 Caleb said, "Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter Achsah to him as a wife."

1212 Caleb announced, "I'll give my daughter Achsah in marriage to whomever leads the attack against Kiriath-sepher and captures it."

1212 And Caleb said, Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah, my daughter, as wife.

1313 Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.

1313 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

1313 So Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as his wife.

1313 Othniel, Caleb's nephew through his younger brother Kenaz, captured the city, so Caleb awarded him his daughter Achsah in marriage.

1313 And Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah, his daughter, as wife.

1414 Then it came about when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you want?"

1414 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

1414 When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want?"

1414 Later on, after she had arrived, she urged Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want for yourself?"

1414 And when she came to [Othniel], she got his consent to ask her father for a [sloping] field. And she alighted off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, What do you want?

1515 She said to him, "Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

1515 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

1515 She answered him, "Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water also." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.

1515 "I want this blessing from you," she replied. "Since you've given me land in the Negev, give me water springs, too." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.

1515 And she said to him, Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the South (the Negeb), give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

1919 Now the LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.

1919 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

1919 The Lord was with Judah and enabled them to take possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the people who were living in the valley because those people had iron chariots.

1919 The LORD was with the army of Judah, and they captured the hill country, but did not expel the inhabitants of the valley because they were equipped with iron chariots.

1919 The Lord was with Judah, and [Judah] drove out the inhabitants of the hill country, but he could not drive out those inhabiting the [difficult] valley basin because they had chariots of iron.

2020 Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.

Benjamin's Failure

2121 But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

2121 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

2121 At the same time the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites have lived among the Benjaminites in Jerusalem to this day.

2121 However, the descendants of Benjamin did not expel the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the descendants of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

2121 But the Benjamites did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; the Jebusites dwell with the Benjamites in Jerusalem to this day.

Success Of The House Of Joseph

2222 Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

2222 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

2222 The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

2222 Then the army of the tribe of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

2222 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

2323 The house of Joseph spied out Bethel (now the name of the city was formerly Luz).

2323 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

2323 They sent spies to Bethel (the town was formerly named Luz).

2323 The army of the tribe of Joseph scouted out Bethel, which had been formerly named Luz.

The Tribes Of Ephraim And Manasseh Conquer Bethel

2424 The spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Please show us the entrance to the city and we will treat you kindly."

2424 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

2424 The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, "Please show us how to get into town, and we will treat you well."

2424 The scouts observed a man coming out of the city and they promised him, "Please show us the entrance to the city and we'll deal kindly with you."

2424 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, Show us, we pray you, the way into the city and we will show you mercy.

2525 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.

2525 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

2525 When he showed them the way into the town, they put the town to the sword but released the man and his entire family.

2525 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they attacked the city with swords, but they let the man and his entire family escape.

2525 When he showed them the entrance to the city, they smote the city with the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.

2626 The man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz which is its name to this day.

2626 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

2626 Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name to this day.

2626 So the man traveled to the land of the Hittites and built a city that he named "Luz," and it is called by that name to this day.

2626 And the man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.

Failure Of The Other Tribes

2727 But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.

2727 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

2727 At that time Manasseh failed to take possession of Beth-sheanand its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the residents of Dor and its villages, or the residents of Ibleamand its villages, or the residents of Megiddo and its villages. But the Canaanites refused to leave this land.

2727 The army of the tribe of Manasseh did not conquer Beth-shean and its villages, Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages. Instead, the Canaanites continued to live in that land.

2727 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or of Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their villages, but the Canaanites remained in that land.

2828 It came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.

2828 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

2828 When Israel became stronger, they made the Canaanites serve as forced labor but never drove them out completely.

2828 When Israel had grown strong, they subjected the Canaanites to conscripted labor and never did expel them completely.

2828 When Israel became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor but did not utterly drive them out.

2929 Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

2929 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

2929 At that time Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived among them in Gezer.

2929 The army of the tribe of Ephraim did not expel the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

2929 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

3030 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labor.

3030 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

3030 Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron or the residents of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them and served as forced labor.

3030 The army of the tribe of Zebulun did not expel the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but were subjected to conscripted labor.

3030 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol, but the Canaanites dwelt among them and were put to forced labor.

3131 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob.

3131 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

3131 Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco or of Sidon, or Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.

3131 The army of the tribe of Asher did not expel the inhabitants of Acco nor the inhabitants of Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.

3131 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob;

3232 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

3232 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

3232 The Asherites lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, because they failed to drive them out.

3232 So the descendants of Asher lived among the Canaanites who continued to inhabit the land, because they did not expel them.

3232 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

3333 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

3333 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

3333 Naphtali did not drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh or the residents of Beth-anath. They lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, but the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served as their forced labor.

3333 The army of the tribe of Naphtali did not expel the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and the inhabitants of Beth-anath. Instead, they lived among the Canaanites who inhabited the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were subjected to conscripted labor.

3333 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

3434 Then the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley;

3434 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

3434 The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to go down into the valley.

3434 Later on, the Amorites forced the descendants of Dan into the hill country and did not permit them to come into the valleys of the hills.

3434 The Amorites forced the Danites back into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down into the plain;

3535 yet the Amorites persisted in living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon and in Shaalbim; but when the power of the house of Joseph grew strong, they became forced labor.

3535 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

3535 The Amorites refused to leave Har-heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. When the house of Joseph got the upper hand, the Amorites were made to serve as forced labor.

3535 Furthermore, the Amorites continued to inhabit Mount Heres in Aijalon and Shaalbim. Eventually, however, after the tribe of Joseph had become strong, the Amorites were subjected to conscripted labor.

3535 The Amorites remained fixed in Mount Heres [mountain of the sun], in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.

3636 The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.

3636 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

3636 The territory of the Amorites extended from the ascent of Akrabbim, that is from Sela upward.

3636 The Amorite border extended upward from the Akrabbim Ascent, that is, from Sela.

3636 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock Sela and onward.
