²⁹ And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. ³⁰ And Gideon had seventy sons of his body begotten, for he had many wives. ³¹ And his concubine that dwelt in Shechem bare him a son also, whose name he called Abimelech.

"Say, I pray you, in the ears of all the inhabiters of Shechem: whether is better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal which are seventy persons reign over you, either that one reign over you. And remember thereto, that I am your bones and your flesh."

And they went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew all his brethren, the sons of Jerubbaal, even seventy persons upon one stone. Notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal escaped, for he hid himself.
