Gideon's Legacy

²⁹ Gideon went back to his home and lived there. ³⁰ Now Gideon had seventy sons who were his direct descendants, for he had many wives. ³¹ He also kept a concubine in Shechem. She bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

Judges 9:2

Ask the men of Shechem: 'Which is better for you. To have all seventy of Gideon's sons govern you or to have just one man? Remember that Abimelech is your own flesh and blood.'

Judges 9:5

He went to his father's house at Ophrah. There on top of a single stone he killed his seventy brothers, Gideon's sons. Gideon's youngest son Jotham hid and therefore was not killed.

Genesis 2:24

This is the reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife. They will become one flesh.

Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of the town, and to the elders, and to those who took care of the sons of Ahab. The letter stated:

Did God make you one? Your flesh and spirit belong to him. What does God look for but godly descendants? Do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.

Matthew 19:5-8

For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. The two shall become one flesh.

Ephesians 5:31-33

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and will stick (adhere) (cleave) (be joined) to his wife. The two will become one flesh.
