The Lord Is Angry

1 How will Jehovah in his anger cover the daughter of Zion! he cast down from the heavens to the earth the beauty of Israel, and he remembered not the footstool of his feet in the day of his anger.

1 How the Lord has (A)covered the daughter of ZionWith a cloud in His anger!He has (B)cast from heaven to earthThe (C)glory of Israel,And has not remembered His (D)footstoolIn the day of His anger.

1 How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!

1 How the Lord has overshadowedDaughter Zion with His anger!He has thrown down Israel’s gloryfrom heaven to earth.He has abandoned His footstool(a)(A)in the day of His anger.(B)

1 How the Lord in his wrath shamed cherished Zion! He cast down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, He did not remember his footstool in the time of his anger.

2 Jehovah swallowed up, not pitying, all the seats of Jacob: he pulled down in his wrath the fortresses of the daughter of Judah; he caused to touch to the earth: he defiled the kingdom and her chiefs.

2 The Lord has (E)swallowed up; He has not sparedAll the habitations of Jacob.In His wrath He has (F)thrown downThe strongholds of the daughter of Judah;He has (G)brought them down to the ground;He has (H)profaned the kingdom and its princes.

2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.

2 ב BetWithout compassion(C) the Lord has swallowed upall the dwellings of Jacob.In His wrath He has demolishedthe fortified cities(D) of Daughter Judah.He brought them to the groundand defiled the kingdom and its leaders.(E)

2 The Lord swallowed up without pity all of Jacob's habitations. In his wrath he tore down the strongholds of fair Judah. He cast to the ground in dishonor both her kingdom and its rulers.

3 He cut off in the burning of anger all the horn of Israel: he turned back his right hand from the face of the enemy, and he will consume against Jacob as a fire of flame devouring round about

3 In fierce anger He has cut off(a)All the (I)strength of Israel;He has (J)drawn back His right handFrom before the enemy.And He has (K)burned in Jacob like a flaming fireConsuming round about.

3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.

3 ג GimelHe has cut off every horn(F) of Israelin His burning angerand withdrawn His right hand(G)in the presence of the enemy.He has blazed against Jacob like a flaming firethat consumes everything.(H)

3 In his fierce wrath he cut off all the strength of Israel. He withdrew his protection as the enemy approached. He burned Jacob like a blazing fire consumes everything around it.

4 He bent his bow as an enemy: he set his right hand as an adversary, and be will slay all the delights of the eye in the tent of the daughter of Zion: he poured his wrath as fire.

4 He has bent His (L)bow like an enemy;He has set His right hand like an adversaryAnd slain all that were (M)pleasant to the eye;In the tent of the daughter of ZionHe has (N)poured out His wrath like fire.

4 He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire.

4 ד DaletHe has bent His bow like an enemy;(I)His right hand is positioned like an adversary.He has killed everyone who was loved,(b)pouring out His wrath like fireon the tent of Daughter Zion.

4 He bent his bow against us as would an enemy, his right hand cocked as would an adversary. He has killed everyone in whom we took pride; in the tent of cherished Zion he poured out his anger like fire.

5 Jehovah was as an enemy: he swallowed up Israel, he swallowed up all her fortresses: he destroyed his fortifications, and he will multiply in the daughter of Judah sorrow and sighing.

5 The Lord has become like an (O)enemy.He has (P)swallowed up Israel;He has swallowed up all its (Q)palaces,He has destroyed its strongholdsAnd (R)multiplied in the daughter of JudahMourning and moaning.

5 The Lord was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

5 ה HeThe Lord is like an enemy;He has swallowed up Israel.He swallowed up all its palacesand destroyed its fortified cities.He has multiplied mourning and lamentationwithin Daughter Judah.(J)

5 The Lord has become like an enemy he has devoured Israel. He has devoured all of her palaces, destroying her fortresses. He filled cherished Judah with mourning and lament.

6 And he will tear away as a garden his dwelling: he destroyed his appointment: Jehovah caused to forget the appointment in Zion, and the Sabbath, and he will despise in the wrath of his anger the king and the priest.

6 And He has violently treated His (b)tabernacle like a garden booth;He has (S)destroyed His appointed (c)meeting place.The Lord has (T)caused to be forgottenThe appointed feast and sabbath in Zion,And He has (U)despised king and priestIn the indignation of His anger.

6 And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

6 ו VavHe has done violence to His temple(c)as if it were a garden booth,destroying His place of meeting.(K)The Lord has abolishedappointed festivals and Sabbaths in Zion.He has despised king and priestin His fierce anger.

6 He plowed under his Temple like a garden, spoiling his tent. The LORD abolished in Zion both festivals and Sabbaths. In his fierce wrath he despised both king and priest.

7 Jehovah rejected his altar, he abhorred his holy place, he shut up in the hand of the enemy the walls of her castles; they gave a voice in the house of Jehovah, as the day of the appointment

7 The Lord has (V)rejected His altar,He has abandoned His sanctuary;He (W)has delivered into the hand of the enemyThe walls of her palaces.They have made a (X)noise in the house of the LordAs in the day of an appointed feast.

7 The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.

7 ז ZayinThe Lord has rejected His altar,repudiated His sanctuary;(L)He has handed the walls of her palacesover to the enemy.They have raised a shout in the house of the Lordas on the day of an appointed festival.

7 The Lord rejected his altar, disavowing his sanctuary. He gave up her palace walls to the control of the enemy. They shouted in the LORD's Temple, as though they were attending a day of celebration.

8 Jehovah purposed to destroy the walls of the daughter of Zion: he stretched out a line, he turned not back his hand from swallowing down: and the entrenchment will mourn, and the wall; together they languished.

8 The Lord (d)determined to destroyThe wall of the daughter of Zion.He has (Y)stretched out a line,He has not restrained His hand from (e)destroying,And He has (Z)caused rampart and wall to lament;They have languished together.

8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.

8 ח KhetThe Lord determined to destroythe wall of Daughter Zion.He stretched out a measuring line(M)and did not restrain Himself from destroying.He made the ramparts and walls grieve;together they waste away.

8 The LORD planned to destroy the walls of cherished Zion. He measured them with his line. He did not withhold his hand from destruction. He made both ramparts and defensive walls mourn; they languish together.

The Prophet Describes Jerusalem's Destruction

9 Her gates sank into the earth; he destroyed and broke her bars: her king and her chiefs among the nations: no law: also her prophets found not a vision from Jehovah.

9 Her (AA)gates have sunk into the ground,He has destroyed and broken her bars.Her king and her princes are among the nations;The (AB)law is no more.Also, her prophets find(AC)No vision from the Lord.

9 Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.

9 ט TetZion’s gates have fallen to the ground;(N)He has destroyed and shattered the bars on her gates.Her king and her leaders live among the nations,instruction(d) is no more,and even her prophets receiveno vision from the Lord.(O)

9 Jerusalem's gates collapsed to the ground; he destroyed and broke the bars of her gates. Both king and prince have gone into captivity. There is no instruction, and the prophets receive no vision from the LORD.

10 They sat upon the earth; the old men of the daughter of Zion were silent; they brought up the dust upon their head: they girded on sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem brought down their head to the earth.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion(AD)Sit on the ground, they (AE)are silent.They have thrown (AF)dust on their heads;They have girded themselves with (AG)sackcloth.The (AH)virgins of JerusalemHave bowed their heads to the ground.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

10 י YodThe elders of Daughter Zionsit on the ground in silence.They have thrown dust on their heads(P)and put on sackcloth.The young women of Jerusalemhave bowed their heads to the ground.(Q)

10 The leaders of cherished Zion sit silently on the ground; they throw dust on their heads and dress in mourning clothes. The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads in sorrow.

11 Mine eyes failed with tears, my bowels were in a ferment, my liver was poured out to the earth, upon the breaking of the daughter of my people; in the fainting of the child and suckling in the wide places of the city.

11 My (AI)eyes fail because of tears,My (f)(AJ)spirit is greatly troubled;My (g)(AK)heart is poured out on the earth(AL)Because of the (h)destruction of the daughter of my people,When (AM)little ones and infants faintIn the streets of the city.

11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

11 כ KafMy eyes are worn out from weeping;(R)I am churning within.My heart is poured out in grief(e)(S)because of the destruction of my dear people,(T)because children and infants faintin the streets of the city.(U)

11 My eyes are worn out from crying, my insides are churning, My emotions pour out in grief because my people are destroyed Children and infants faint in the streets of the city.

12 To their mothers will they say, Where the grain and wine? in their languishing as the wounded in the broad places of the city, in the pouring out of their soul into their mothers bosom.

12 They say to their mothers,(AN)Where is grain and wine?”As they faint like a wounded manIn the streets of the city,As their (AO)life is poured outOn their mothers’ bosom.

12 They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom.

12 ל LamedThey cry out to their mothers:Where is the grain and wine?(V)as they faint like the woundedin the streets of the city,as their lives fade awayin the arms of their mothers.

12 They ask their mothers, "Is there anything to eat or drink?" They faint in the streets of the city like wounded men. Their life ebbs away while they lie on their mother's bosom.

The Prophet Speaks Out: The Lord Destroyed You

13 What shall I testify for thee? What shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to thee, and comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for great as the sea thy breaking: who shall heal for thee?

13 How shall I admonish you?To what (AP)shall I compare you,O daughter of Jerusalem?To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,O (AQ)virgin daughter of Zion?For your (i)ruin is as vast as the sea;Who can (AR)heal you?

13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?

13 מ MemWhat can I say on your behalf?What can I compare you to, Daughter Jerusalem?What can I liken you to,so that I may console you, Virgin Daughter Zion?For your ruin is as vast as the sea.Who can heal you?(W)

13 What can be said about you? To what should you be compared, fair Jerusalem? To what may I liken you, so I may comfort you, fair one of Zion? Indeed, your wound is as deep as the sea who can heal you?

14 Thy prophets saw for thee vanity and a foolish thing, and they uncovered not upon thine iniquity to turn back thy captivity; and they will see for thee burdens of falsehood and seductions.

14 Your (AS)prophets have seen for youFalse and foolish visions;And they have not (AT)exposed your iniquitySo as to restore you from captivity,But they have (AU)seen for you false and misleading (j)oracles.

14 Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.

14 נ NunYour prophets saw visions for youthat were empty and deceptive;(X)they did not reveal your guiltand so restore your fortunes.(Y)They saw oracles for youthat were empty and misleading.

14 Your prophets look on your behalf; they see false and deceptive visions. They did not expose your sins in order to restore what had been captured. Instead, they crafted oracles for you that are false and misleading.

15 All passing by the way clapped their hands at thee; they hissed, and they will nod their head at the daughter of Jerusalem: This the city, they will say; the complete splendor of joy to all the earth.

15 All who pass along the way(AV)Clap their hands in derision at you;They (AW)hiss and shake their headsAt the daughter of Jerusalem,“Is this the city of which they said,(AX)The perfection of beauty,(AY)A joy to all the earth’?”

15 All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

15 ס SamekAll who pass byscornfully clap their hands(Z) at you.They mock(f)(AA) and shake their heads(AB)at Daughter Jerusalem:Is this the city that was calledthe perfection of beauty,(AC)the joy of the whole earth?(AD)

15 Everyone who passes by on the road shake their fists at you. They hiss and shake their heads at cherished Jerusalem: "Is this the city men used to call "The Perfection of Beauty,' and "The Joy of the Entire Earth'"?

16 All thine enemies opened wide their mouth upon thee: they hissed and they will gnash the teeth: they said, We swallowed down: surely this the day we longed for; we found; we saw.

16 All (AZ)your enemiesHave opened their mouths wide against you;They hiss and (BA)gnash their teeth.They say, “We have (BB)swallowed her up!Surely this is the (BC)day for which we waited;We have reached it, we have seen it.”

16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

16 פ PeAll your enemiesopen their mouths against you.(AE)They hiss and gnash their teeth,(AF)saying, “We have swallowed her up.(AG)This is the day we have waited for!We have lived to see it.”

16 All of your enemies insult you with gaping mouths. They hiss and grind their teeth while saying, "We have devoured her completely. Yes, this is the day that we anticipated! We found it at last; we have seen it!"

17 Jehovah did what he purposed; he completed his word which he commanded in days of old: he pulled down and he pitied not: and be will gladden the enemy over thee; he lifted up the horn of thine adversaries.

17 The Lord has (BD)done what He purposed;He has accomplished His wordWhich He commanded from days of old.He has thrown down (BE)without sparing,And He has caused the enemy to (BF)rejoice over you;He has (BG)exalted the (k)might of your adversaries.

17 The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.

17 ע AyinThe Lord has done what He planned;He has accomplished His decree,which He ordained in days of old.He has demolished without compassion,(AH)letting the enemy gloat over youand exalting the horn of your adversaries.

17 The LORD did what he planned. He carried out his threat. Just as he commanded long ago, he has torn down without pity; He let the enemy boast about you and has exalted the power of your enemies.

18 Their heart cried to Jehovah, O wall of the daughter of Zion, cause tears to go down as a torrent day and night thou shalt give no remission to thyself; the daughter of thine eye shall not be silent

18 Their (BH)heart cried out to the Lord,“O (BI)wall of the daughter of Zion,Let your (BJ)tears run down like a river day and night;Give yourself no relief,Let (l)your eyes have no rest.

18 Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.

18 צ TsadeThe hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.Wall of Daughter Zion,(AI)let your tears run down like a riverday and night.(AJ)Give yourself no reliefand your(g) eyes no rest.

18 Cry out from your heart to the Lord, wall of fair Zion! Let your tears run down like a river day and night. Allow yourself no rest, and don't stop crying.

19 Arise, cry aloud in the night: at the head of the watches pour out thy heart as water before the face of Jehovah: lift up thy hands to him for the soul of thy young children fainting with hunger in the head of all the streets.

19 “Arise, cry aloud in the (BK)nightAt the beginning of the night watches;(BL)Pour out your heart like waterBefore the presence of the Lord;Lift up your hands to HimFor the (BM)life of your little onesWho are (BN)faint because of hungerAt the head of every street.”

19 Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.

19 ק QofArise, cry out in the nightfrom the first watch of the night.Pour out your heart like waterbefore the Lord’s presence.(AK)Lift up your hands to Himfor the lives of your childrenwho are fainting from hungeron the corner of every street.(AL)

19 Get up and cry aloud in the night, at the beginning of every hour. Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord! Lift up your hands toward him for the lives of your children, who are fainting away at every street corner.

Zion Speaks Out: The Lord Destroyed Me

20 See, O Jehovah, and look to whom thou didst accomplish this Shall the women eat their fruit, the children borne upon the hands? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the holy place of Jehovah?

20 See, O Lord, and look!With (BO)whom have You dealt thus?Should women (BP)eat their (m)offspring,The little ones who were (n)born healthy?Should (BQ)priest and prophet be slainIn the sanctuary of the Lord?

20 Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

20 ר ReshLord, look and considerwho You have done this to.Should women eat their own children,(AM)the infants they have nurtured?(h)Should priests and prophetsbe killed in the Lord’s sanctuary?

20 Look, LORD, and take note: To whom have you done this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cuddled? Should priests and prophets be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 The youth and old man lay down upon the earth of the streets; my virgins and my young men fell by the sword; thou didst slay in the day of thine anger; thou didst slay, thou didst not pity.

21 On the ground in the streetsLie (BR)young and old;My (BS)virgins and my young menHave fallen by the sword.You have slain them in the day of Your anger,You have slaughtered, (BT)not sparing.

21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied.

21 שׁ ShinBoth young and oldare lying on the ground in the streets.My young men and womenhave fallen by the sword.You have killed them in the day of Your anger,slaughtering without compassion.(AN)

21 Young men and the aged lie on the ground in the streets; my young women and young men have fallen by the sword. You killed them in your anger, slaughtering them without pity.

22 Thou wilt call as the day of appointment my sojourning from round about, and in the day of the anger of Jehovah there was no escaping and surviving: those I bore upon my hands and brought up, the enemy finished.

22 You called as in the day of an appointed feastMy (BU)terrors on every side;And there was (BV)no one who escaped or survivedIn the day of the Lord’s anger.Those (BW)whom I (o)bore and reared,My enemy annihilated them.

22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD'S anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.

22 ת TavYou summoned my attackers(i) on every side,(AO)as if for an appointed festival day;on the day of the Lord’s angerno one escaped or survived.My enemy has destroyedthose I nurtured(j) and reared.

22 You have invited those who terrorize me to come around, as if today were a festival. No one has escaped or survived the time of the LORD's anger. My enemy has finished off those whom I cuddled and raised.
