Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law of Moses, who would not be immersed by John, rejected God's purpose for themselves.
Then one of the teachers of the law of Moses answered Jesus, saying, "Teacher, you insulted us too by saying this."
One of them, a teacher of the law of Moses, asked Him a question [in an attempt] to test Him.
Then a certain ruler [Note: This man was young and rich. See Matt. 19:16-22] asked Jesus, "Good Teacher, what should I do in order to inherit never ending life?"
Then a rich, young man [See verse 22] came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good deed should I do in order to have never ending life?"
After bringing them out [of the jail area] he said, "Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved?"
For if the inheritance [of never ending life] can be obtained by [obeying the requirements of] the law of Moses, it would not come from the promise [of God]; but God provided [this inheritance] for Abraham according to [His] promise.
