For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he's the messenger of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

"Pay attention! I'm sending Elijah the prophet to you before the great and dreadful Day of the LORD comes,

This is the man about whom it is written, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way.

And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, because you will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his way

Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

And he

A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; and in the desert a straight highway for our God.'

About this time, John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the Judean wilderness,

So the disciples asked him, "Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

He will bring many of Israel's descendants back to the Lord their God.

John went throughout the entire Jordan region, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins,

John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, "The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'"

You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, "I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.'

Before Jesus' appearance, John had already preached a baptism of repentance to all the people in Israel.

Then Paul said, "John baptized when they repented, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus."

A declaration from the LORD to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool."

"Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign. Watch! The virgin is conceiving a child, and will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel.
