This is the man of whom the Scripture says, "'Attention! I am sending my messenger on before you; He will prepare the road ahead of you.'

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah: "Here I send my messenger ahead of you; He will prepare your way.

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to make ready His ways,

If not, then what did you go out there to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is far more than a prophet.

There appeared a man named John, sent from God.

And he

In those days John the Baptist appeared, and kept preaching in the desert of Judea,

The disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

And he will turn many of Israel's descendants to the Lord their God.

And he went all over the Jordan valley, preaching a baptism conditioned on repentance to obtain the forgiveness of sins,

John testified to Him and cried out, for this was the one who said, "The One who is coming after me has been put before me, because He existed before me."

You can bear testimony to me yourselves that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent as His announcer.'

as John, before His coming, had already preached baptism as an expression of repentance, for all the people of Israel.

Then Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism that was an expression of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was to come after him; that is, in Jesus."

And

for today, in the town of David, a Saviour for you has been born, who is to be your Messiah and Lord.

So John called two of them to him and sent them to the Lord, to ask, "Are you the One who was to come, or should we continue to look for someone else?"

So He was teaching daily in the temple, and the high priests and the scribes and the leading men of the people were trying to destroy Him,

And in the temple court He found the dealers in cattle, sheep, and pigeons; the money-changers, too, seated at their tables.

Even

This is the one who in the congregation in the desert went between the angel, who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and our forefathers, who also received, to be handed down to you, utterances that still live.
