13 People were bringing children to Him so that He would touch and bless them, but the disciples reprimanded them and discouraged them [from coming].

14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; (L)for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

14 When Jesus saw it, He was indignant(AA) and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me.(AB) Don’t stop(AC) them, for the kingdom of God(AD) belongs to such as these.

14 When Jesus saw this, he became furious and told them, "Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom of God belongs to people like these.

14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and He said to them, “Allow the children to come to Me; do not forbid them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15 Truly I say to you, (M)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

A Rich Young Man

17 (O)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (P)knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to (Q)inherit eternal life?”

17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

17 As(AJ) He was setting out on a journey,(AK) a man ran up, knelt down(AL) before Him, and asked Him, “Good(AM) Teacher,(AN) what must I do to inherit(AO) eternal life?”(AP)

17 As Jesus was setting out again, a man ran up to him, knelt down in front of him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

17 As He was leaving on His journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, “Good Teacher [You who are essentially good and morally perfect], what shall I do to inherit eternal life [that is, eternal salvation in the Messiah’s kingdom]?”(E)

18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

18 “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One—God.(AQ)

18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus asked him. "Nobody is good except for one God.

18 Jesus said to him, (c)Why do you call Me good? No one is [essentially] good [by nature] except God alone.

19 You know the commandments, ‘(R)Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

19 You know the commandments:Do not murder;(AR)do not commit adultery;(AS)do not steal;(AT)do not bear false witness;(AU)do not defraud;(AV)honor(AW) your father and mother.(AX)(f)

19 You know the commandments: "Never murder.' "Never commit adultery.' "Never steal.' "Never give false testimony.' "Never cheat.' "Honor your father and mother.'"

19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not testify falsely, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”(F)

20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept (S)all these things from my youth up.”

20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

20 He said to Him, “Teacher,(AY) I have kept all these from my youth.”

20 The man replied to him, "Teacher, I have obeyed all of these since I was a young man."

20 And he replied to Him, “Teacher, I have [carefully] kept all these [commandments] since my (d)youth.”

21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have (T)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

21 Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him(AZ) and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor,(BA) and you will have treasure(BB) in heaven.(BC) Then come,(g) follow Me.”(BD)

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. Then he told him, "You're missing one thing. Go and sell everything you own, give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me."

21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love (high regard, compassion) for him, and He said to him, “You lack one thing: go and sell all your property and give [the money] to the poor, and you will have [abundant] treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me [becoming My disciple, believing and trusting in Me and walking the same path of life that I walk].”

22 But at these words (g)he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

22 But he was stunned(h) at this demand, and he went away grieving,(BE) because he had many possessions.(BF)

22 Shocked at this statement, the man went away sad, because he had many possessions.

22 But the man was saddened at Jesus’ words, and he left grieving, because he owned much property and had many possessions [which he treasured more than his relationship with God].

23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, (U)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”

23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

23 Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth(BG) to enter the kingdom of God!”(BH)

23 Then Jesus looked around and told his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"

23 Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who are wealthy [and cling to possessions and status as security] to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples (V)were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

24 But the disciples were astonished at His words. Again Jesus said to them, “Children,(BI) how hard it is(i) to enter the kingdom of God!

24 The disciples were startled by these words, but Jesus told them again, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in their wealth to get into the kingdom of God!

24 The disciples were (e)amazed and bewildered by His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is [for those who place their hope and confidence in riches] to enter the kingdom of God!

25 (W)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich(BJ) person to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 It's easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God."

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man [who places his faith in wealth or status] to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 They were even more astonished and said to Him, “(h)Then who can be saved?”

26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

26 So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?”(BK)

26 The disciples were utterly amazed and asked one another, "Then who can be saved?"

26 They were completely and utterly astonished, and said to Him, “Then who can be saved [from the wrath of God]?”

27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, (X)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

27 Looking at them, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible,(BL) but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”

27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, "For humans it's impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God."

27 Looking at them, Jesus said, “With people [as far as it depends on them] it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28 (Y)Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”

28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

28 Peter(BM) began to tell Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”

28 Then Peter began to say to him, "See, we have left everything and followed you."

28 Peter started saying to Him, “Look, we have given up everything and followed You [becoming Your disciples and accepting You as Teacher and Lord].”

29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, (Z)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

29 “I assure you,”(BN) Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house, brothers or sisters, mother or father,(j) children, or fields because of Me and the gospel,(BO)

29 Jesus said, "I tell all of you with certainty, there is no one who has left his home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or fields because of me and the gospel

29 Jesus said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, there is no one who has given up a house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,

30 (i)but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in (j)the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (AA)the age to come, eternal life.

30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

30 who will not receive 100 times(BP) more, now at this time(BQ)—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions(BR)—and eternal life(BS) in the age to come.(BT)

30 who will not receive a hundred times as much here in this world homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, along with persecution as well as eternal life in the age to come.

30 who will not receive a hundred times as much now in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms—along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.

31 But (AB)many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(BU)

31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."

31 But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

32 Now Jesus and his disciples had been on the road going up to Jerusalem, with Jesus walking ahead of them. They were astonished, and the others who followed were afraid.

32 Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were perplexed [at what Jesus had said], and those who were following were alarmed and afraid. And again He took the twelve [disciples] aside and began telling them what was going to happen to Him,

33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (AE)the Son of Man will be (k)delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will (l)hand Him over to the Gentiles.

33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

33 “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man(BZ) will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes,(CA) and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles,(CB)

33 Once again, Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. "Pay attention! We're going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and the scribes, and they'll condemn him to death. Then they'll hand him over to the unbelievers,

33 saying, “Listen very carefully: we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and hand Him over to the Gentiles (Romans).

34 They will mock Him and (AF)spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”

34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

34 and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog(k) Him, and kill Him, and He will rise(CC) after three days.”(CD)

34 and they'll make fun of him, spit on him, whip him, and kill him. But after three days he'll be raised."

34 They will mock and ridicule Him and spit on Him, and whip (scourge) Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise [from the dead].”

A Request By James And John

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

35 Then(CE) James(CF) and John,(CG) the sons of Zebedee,(CH) approached Him and said, “Teacher,(CI) we want You to do something for us if we ask You.”

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, went to Jesus and told him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you."

35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.”(G)

36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

36 “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked them.

36 He asked them, "What do you want me to do for you?"

36 And He replied to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

37 They said to Him, “(n)Grant that we (AH)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.”

37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

37 They answered Him, “Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.”(CJ)

37 They asked him, "Let us sit in your glory, one on your right and one on your left."

37 They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit [with You], one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory [Your majesty and splendor in Your kingdom].”

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (AI)to drink the cup that I drink, or (AJ)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”

38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking.(CK) Are you able to drink the cup(CL) I drink or to be baptized with the baptism(CM) I am baptized with?”(CN)

38 But Jesus told them, "You don't realize what you're asking. Can you drink from the cup that I'm going to drink from or be baptized with the baptism with which I'm going to be baptized?"

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism [of suffering and death] with which I am baptized?”

39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (AK)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

39 “We are able,” they told Him.Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.(CO)

39 They told him, "We can."

39 And they replied to Him, “We are able.” Jesus told them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; (AL)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

40 But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to give; instead, it is for those it has been prepared for.”

40 Jesus told them, "You will drink from the cup that I'm going to drink and be baptized with the baptism with which I'm going to be baptized. But it's not up to me to grant you a seat at my right or my left. Those positions have already been prepared for others."

40 But to sit on My right or left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared [by My Father].”

41 (AM)Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with (o)James and John.

41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

41 When the other 10 disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.(CP)

42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.

42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

42 Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate(CQ) them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them.

42 Jesus called his disciples and told them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers among the unbelievers lord it over them, and their superiors act like tyrants over them.

42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their powerful men exercise authority over them [tyrannizing them].

43 But it is not this way among you, (AN)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;

43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

43 But it must not be like that among you.(CR) On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(CS)

43 That's not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

43 But this is not how it is among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,

44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave(CT) to all.

44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to everyone,

44 and whoever wishes to be first and most important among you must be slave of all.
