Yahweh Brings A Charge Against Israel

1 Hear ye now what Jehovah saith: Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

1 Now listen to what the Lord is saying:Rise, plead your case before the mountains,and let the hills hear your voice.

1 Please hear what the LORD says: "Get up and make your case before the mountains, and let the hills listen to your voice.

2 Hear, O ye mountains, Jehovah's controversy, and ye enduring foundations of the earth; for Jehovah hath a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.

2 “Listen, you mountains, to the indictment of the Lord,And you enduring (A)foundations of the earth,Because the (B)Lord has a case against His people;Even with Israel He will dispute.

2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.

2 Listen to the Lord’s lawsuit,(A)you mountains and enduring foundations of the earth,(B)because the Lord has a case against His people,(C)and He will argue it against Israel.

2 Listen, you mountains, to the LORD's argument! Listen, you strong foundations of the earth, because the LORD has a dispute with his people, and he will set out his case before Israel.

3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

3 (C)My people, (D)what have I done to you,And (E)how have I wearied you? Answer Me.

3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

3 My people,(D) what have I done to you,(E)or how have I wearied you?(F)Testify against Me!

3 "My people, what have I done to you, and how have I offended you? Answer me!

4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

4 “Indeed, I (F)brought you up from the land of EgyptAnd (G)ransomed you from the house of slavery,And I sent before you (H)Moses, Aaron and (I)Miriam.

4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

4 Indeed, I brought you up(G) from the land of Egyptand redeemed you(H) from that place of slavery.(I)I sent Moses,(J) Aaron, and Miriam(K) ahead of you.

4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and ransomed you from the house of slavery, sending Moses, Aaron, and Miriam into your presence.

5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him; remember from Shittim unto Gilgal, that ye may know the righteous acts of Jehovah.

5 “My people, remember nowWhat (J)Balak king of Moab counseledAnd what Balaam son of Beor answered him,And from (K)Shittim to (L)Gilgal,So (b)that you might know the (M)righteous acts of the Lord.”

5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

5 My people,remember what Balak king of Moab(L) proposed,what Balaam son of Beor answered him,(M)and what happened from the Acacia Grove(a)(N) to Gilgal(O)so that you may acknowledgethe Lord’s righteous acts.(P)

5 "My people, recall how king Balak of Moab deliberated, and how Beor's son Balaam counseled him from Shittim to Gilgal, so that you may know the righteousness of the LORD."

What Does Yahweh Require?

6 Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old?

6 (N)With what shall I come to the LordAnd bow myself before the God on high?Shall I come to Him with (O)burnt offerings,With yearling calves?

6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

6 What should I bring before the Lord(Q)when I come to bow before God on high?Should I come before Him with burnt offerings,(R)with year-old calves?

6 How am I to present myself in the LORD's presence and bow in the presence of the High God? Should I present myself with burnt offerings, with year-old calves?

7 will Jehovah be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

7 Does the Lord take delight in (P)thousands of rams,In ten thousand rivers of oil?Shall I present my (Q)firstborn for my rebellious acts,The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

7 Would the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams(S)or with ten thousand streams of oil?Should I give my firstborn for my transgression,(T)the child of my body for my own sin?

7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with endless rivers of oil? Am I to give my firstborn to pay for my rebellion, the fruit of my body in exchange for my soul?

8 He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?

8 He has (R)told you, O man, what is good;And (S)what does the Lord require of youBut to (T)do justice, to (U)love (c)kindness,And to walk (d)(V)humbly with your God?

8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

8 Mankind, He has told you what is good(U)and what it is the Lord requires of you:(V)to act justly,(W)to love faithfulness,(X)and to walk humbly with your God.(Y)

8 He has made it clear to you, mortal man, what is good and what the LORD is requiring from you to act with justice, to treasure the LORD's gracious love, and to walk humbly in the company of your God.

The Destruction Of The Wicked

9 The voice of Jehovah crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom will see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

9 The voice of the Lord will call to the city—And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:“Hear, O tribe. Who has appointed (e)its time?

9 The LORD'S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

9 The voice of Yahweh calls out to the city(b)(and it is wise to fear Your name):“Pay attention to the rodand the One who ordained it.(c)

9 The voice of the LORD cries out to the city wisdom fears your name: "Heed the rod, and the one who prepared it!

10 Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and a scant measure that is abominable?

10 “Is there yet a man in the wicked house,Along with treasures of (W)wickednessAnd a (f)(X)short measure that is cursed?

10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?

10 Are there still(d) the treasures of wickedness(Z)and the accursed short measure(AA)in the house of the wicked?

10 Are there still wicked treasures in the house of the wicked, along with deceitful and abominable measuring standards?

11 Shall I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights?

11 “Can I justify wicked (Y)scalesAnd a bag of deceptive weights?

11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

11 Can I excuse wicked scalesor bags of deceptive weights?(AB)

11 Will I tolerate those who maintain deceptive standards and who use deceitful weights in their business?

12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

12 “For the rich men of the (g)city are full of (Z)violence,Her residents speak (AA)lies,And their (AB)tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

12 For the wealthy of the city are full of violence,(AC)and its residents speak lies;(AD)the tongues in their mouths are deceitful.(AE)

12 Her rich people are filled with violence, and her inhabitants tell lies their tongues speak deceitfully!

13 Therefore I also have smitten thee with a grievous wound; I have made thee desolate because of thy sins.

13 “So also I will make you (AC)sick, striking you down,(AD)Desolating you because of your sins.

13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.

13 “As a result, I have begun to strike you severely,(e)(AF)bringing desolation because of your sins.(AG)

13 "Therefore I will make you ill when I attack you; I will bring you to ruin because of your offenses.

14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy humiliation shall be in the midst of thee: and thou shalt put away, but shalt not save; and that which thou savest will I give up to the sword.

14 “You will eat, but you will (AE)not be satisfied,And your (h)vileness will be in your midst.You will try to remove for safekeeping,But you will (AF)not preserve anything,And what you do preserve I will give to the sword.

14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.

14 You will eat but not be satisfied,(AH)for there will be hunger within you.What you acquire, you cannot save,(AI)and what you do save,I will give to the sword.(f)

14 You'll eat, but you won't have enough; and hunger will be common among you. You'll horde things, but you won't save them, and what you preserve I'll give over to the sword.

15 Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not anoint thee with oil; and the vintage, but shalt not drink the wine.

15 “You will sow but you will (AG)not reap.You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil;And the grapes, but you will (AH)not drink wine.

15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.

15 You will sow but not reap;(AJ)you will press olivesbut not anoint yourself with oil;and you will tread grapesbut not drink the wine.(AK)

15 You'll plant, but you won't reap. You'll crush the olive harvest, but you'll have no oil to anoint yourself. You'll tread out the grapes, but you'll never drink wine.

16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I may make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing: and ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

16 “The statutes of (AI)OmriAnd all the works of the house of (AJ)Ahab are observed;And in their devices you (AK)walk.Therefore I will give you up for (AL)destructionAnd (i)your inhabitants for (AM)derision,And you will bear the (AN)reproach of My people.”

16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

16 The statutes of Omriand all the practices of Ahab’s househave been observed;you have followed their policies.(AL)Therefore, I will make you a desolate place(AM)and the city’s(g) residents an object of contempt;(h)(AN)you will bear the scorn of My people.”(i)(AO)

16 You keep Omri's statutes and observe the customs of the house of Ahab. Because you live according to their advice, I'll make you desolate and turn your inhabitants into an object of scorn. Therefore you will bear the shame of my people."
