Outside his door lay a poor man called Lazarus; he was a mass of ulcers, and fain to eat up the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. (The very dogs used to come and lick his ulcers.) Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man died too, and was buried.

Now the people who were with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead, testified to it; and that was why the crowd went out to meet him, because they heard he had performed this Sign.

Jesus, however, had been speaking of his death; but as they imagined he meant natural sleep, he then told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead;
