The Pharisees and Sadducees [i.e., these were strict sects of the Jewish religion], came out and began disputing with Jesus, asking for a [supernatural] sign from Him, [in an attempt] to test Him.
Then Jesus ordered them, saying, "Pay attention and watch out for the leavening [effect] of the Pharisees and Herod." [Note: By "Herod" is probably meant the Herodians, who were a party favorable to King Herod and, along with the Pharisees and Sadducees, were out to get Jesus. See Matt. 16:6].
And there came to him Sadducees, who say there is no coming back from the dead; and they put a question to him, saying,

And the Sadducees come to Him, who say there is no resurrection; and asked Him, saying; Teacher, Moses wrote to us, That if the brother of any man may die, and leave a wife and have no children, that his brother must take his wife and raise up seed to his brother. And the second received her and died, and he left no seed; and the third likewise. And the seven received her and left no seed. Last of all the woman also died. Then in the resurrection, when they may rise, of which one of them shall she be the wife? for the seven had her a wife. And Jesus responding, said to them; Therefore do you not err, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they may rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but they are as angels in the heavens. But concerning the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses at the Bush, how God spoke to him saying; I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You do err much.

And certain ones of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, coming forward asked Him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, That if the brother of any one may die having a wife, and the same may die childless, that his brother must take his wife and raise up seed to his brother. And when the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were at a loss concerning them, what this might be. And a certain one coming announced to them, Behold, the men whom you placed in the prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people. Then the captain along with the officers, having gone away, led them, not with violence, for they feared the people lest they might be stoned. And leading them, they placed them in the council, and the chief priests asked them, saying, With commandment we commanded you not to teach in this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching; and you are determined to bring upon us the blood of this man. But Peter and the apostles responding said, It behooves us to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you have slain, hanging him on the wood; Him hath God exalted at His own right hand, a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance and remission of sins to Israel. And we are witnesses of these words, and the Holy Ghost, whom God has given to those who obey him. And hearing, they were cut through and were minded to kill them.
