3 Do not (B)desire his delicacies,For it is deceptive food.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

3 don’t desire his choice food,(A)for that food is deceptive.

3 Don't crave his delicacies, because the meal is deceptive.

4 (C)Do not weary yourself to gain wealth,(D)Cease from your (b)consideration of it.

4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

4 Don’t wear yourself out to get rich;(B)stop giving your attention to it.

4 Don't exhaust yourself acquiring wealth; be smart enough to stop.

5 (c)When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.For (E)wealth certainly makes itself wingsLike an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

5 As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears,(C)for it makes wings for itselfand flies like an eagle to the sky.

5 When you fix your gaze on it, it's gone, for it sprouts wings for itself and flies to the sky like an eagle.

5 When you set your eyes on wealth, it is [suddenly] gone.For wealth certainly makes itself wingsLike an eagle that flies to the heavens.

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

6 Don't consume food provided by a miserly person, and don't desire his delicacies,

6 Do not eat the bread of a selfish man,Or desire his delicacies;

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

7 for as he thinks within himself, so he is. "Eat and drink!" he'll say to you, but his heart won't be with you.

7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior—one who manipulates].He says to you, “Eat and drink,”Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost].

8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

Learning From Your Father

12 Apply your heart to disciplineAnd your ears to words of knowledge.

12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

12 Apply yourself to disciplineand listen to words of knowledge.

13 (O)Do not hold back discipline from the child,Although you (i)strike him with the rod, he will not die.

13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

20 Do not be with (Y)heavy drinkers of wine,Or with (Z)gluttonous eaters of meat;

20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

20 Don't associate with heavy drinkers or dine with gluttons,

20 Do not associate with heavy drinkers of wine,Or with gluttonous eaters of meat,(D)

21 For the (AA)heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,And (AB)drowsiness will clothe one with rags.

21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

21 For the drunkard and the glutton will become poor,and grogginess will clothe them in rags.(U)

21 because drunks and gluttons tend to become poor, and drowsiness will clothe them in rags.

21 For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,And the drowsiness [of overindulgence] will clothe one with rags.

33 Your [drunken] eyes will see strange thingsAnd your mind will utter perverse things [untrue things, twisted things].

34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

34 You’ll be like someone sleeping out at seaor lying down on the top of a ship’s mast.

34 You will be like someone who lies down in the sea, or like someone who sleeps on top of a mast.

34 And you will be [as unsteady] as one who lies down in the middle of the sea,And [as vulnerable to disaster] as one who lies down on the top of a ship’s mast, saying,

35 “They (AT)struck me, but I did not become (w)ill;They beat me, but I did not know it.When shall I awake?I will (AU)seek (x)another drink.”

35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

35 “They struck me, but(h) I feel no pain!They beat me, but I didn’t know it!(AG)When will I wake up?I’ll look for another drink.”(AH) >

35 "They struck me," you will say, "but I never felt it. They beat me, but I never knew it When will I wake up? I want another drink."

35 “They struck me, but I was not hurt!They beat me, but I did not feel it!When will I wake up?I will seek more wine.”
