Obedience To The Governing Authorities

1 Every (a)(A)person is to be in (B)subjection to the governing authorities. For (C)there is no authority except (b)from God, and those which exist are established by God.

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

1 Everyone must submit to the governing authorities,(A) for there is no authority except from God,(B) and those that exist are instituted by God.

1 Every person must be subject to the governing authorities, for no authority exists except by God's permission. The existing authorities have been established by God,

1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God [granted by His permission and sanction], and those which exist have been put in place by God.(A)

2 Therefore (c)whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

2 So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.

2 so that whoever resists the authorities opposes what God has established, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

2 Therefore whoever (a)resists [governmental] authority resists the ordinance of God. And those who have resisted it will bring judgment (civil penalty) on themselves.

3 For (D)rulers are not a cause of fear for (d)good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

3 For rulers are not a terror(C) to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval.

3 For the authorities are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you like to live without being afraid of the authorities? Then do what is right, and you will receive their approval.

3 For [civil] authorities are not a source of fear for [people of] good behavior, but for [those who do] evil. Do you want to be unafraid of authority? Do what is good and you will receive approval and commendation.

4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an (E)avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

4 For government is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For government is God’s servant, an avenger(D) that brings wrath on the one who does wrong.

4 For they are God's servants, working for your good.

4 For he is God’s servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, [you should] be afraid; for he does not carry the [executioner’s] sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an avenger who brings punishment on the wrongdoer.

5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also (F)for conscience’ sake.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

5 Therefore, you must submit, not only because of wrath, but also because of your conscience.(E)

5 But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for it is not without reason that they bear the sword. Indeed, they are God's servants to administer punishment to anyone who does wrong. Therefore, it is necessary for you to be acquiescent to the authorities, not only for the sake of God's punishment, but also for the sake of your own conscience.

5 Therefore one must be subject [to civil authorities], not only to escape the punishment [that comes with wrongdoing], but also as a matter of principle [knowing what is right before God].

6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

6 And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s public servants, continually attending to these tasks.(a)

6 This is also why you pay taxes. For rulers are God's servants faithfully devoting themselves to their work.

6 For this same reason you pay taxes, for civil authorities are God’s servants, devoting themselves to governance.

7 (G)Render to all what is due them: (H)tax to whom tax is due; (I)custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

7 Pay your obligations(F) to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes,(G) tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect,(H) and honor to those you owe honor.

7 Pay everyone whatever you owe them taxes to whom taxes are due, tolls to whom tolls are due, fear to whom fear is due, honor to whom honor is due.

7 Pay to all what is due: tax to whom tax is due, customs to whom customs, respect to whom respect, honor to whom honor.

Love Fulfills The Law

8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for (J)he who loves (e)his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

8 Do not owe anyone anything,(b) except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.(I)

8 Do not owe anyone anything except to love one another. For the one who loves another has fulfilled the Law.

8 (b)Owe nothing to anyone except to (c)love and seek the best for one another; for he who [unselfishly] loves his neighbor has fulfilled the [essence of the] law [relating to one’s fellowman].(B)

9 For this, “(K)You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “(L)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

9 The commandments:Do not commit adultery;do not murder;do not steal;(c)do not covet;(J)(d)and whatever other commandment—all are summed up by this: Love your neighbor as yourself.(K)(e)

9 For the commandments, "You must not commit adultery; you must not murder; you must not steal; you must not covet," and every other commandment are summed up in this statement: "You must love your neighbor as yourself."

9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,” and any other commandment are summed up in this statement: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”(C)

10 Love (f)does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (M)love is the fulfillment of the law.

10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Love, therefore, is the fulfillment of the law.

10 Love never does anything that is harmful to its neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the Law.

10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor [it never hurts anyone]. Therefore [unselfish] love is the fulfillment of the Law.

Put On Christ

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is (N)already the hour for you to (O)awaken from sleep; for now (g)salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

11 Besides this, knowing the time, it is already the hour(L) for you(f) to wake up from sleep,(M) for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.(N)

11 This is necessary because you know the times it's already time for you to wake up from sleep, because our salvation is nearer now than when we became believers.

11 Do this, knowing that this is a critical time. It is already the hour for you to awaken from your sleep [of spiritual complacency]; for our salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed [in Christ].

12 (P)The night is almost gone, and (Q)the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside (R)the deeds of darkness and put on (S)the armor of light.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

12 The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near,(O) so let us discard the deeds of darkness(P) and put on the armor of light.(Q)

12 The night is almost over, and the day is near. Let's therefore put aside the actions of darkness and put on the armor of light.

12 The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.

13 Let us (h)(T)behave properly as in the day, (U)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

13 Let us walk with decency,(R) as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness;(S) not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy.

13 Let's behave decently, as people who live in the light of day. No wild parties, drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, quarreling, or jealousy!

13 Let us conduct ourselves properly and honorably as in the [light of] day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility, not in quarreling and jealousy.

14 But (V)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (W)in regard to its lusts.

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,(T) and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires.(U)

14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and do not obey your flesh and its desires.

14 But clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for [nor even think about gratifying] the flesh in regard to its improper desires.
