Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law: that every one may be silenc'd, and all the world plead guilty before God.
'Tis true, you bear the name of a Jew, you depend upon the law, and boast of your worship:
for if Abraham was justified by works, he had matter of pretension, whereas he had no such claim from God.
Then he propos'd this parable, concerning those who had a great opinion of their own justice, and look'd with contempt upon others.
1 Corinthians 1:29
that no man might glory before God;
1 Corinthians 4:7
for who has distinguish'd thee above another? or what have you, that you did not receive? now if you did receive it, why do you glory as if you had not received it?
for by grace are ye saved, thro' faith (and that not from us:
for before they were born, and had done neither good or evil, that the distinction which God had purposed to make might appear to be, not in consideration of their actions, but of his own free call,
For Moses describes the justice that was to be had by the law, thus : "the man who performeth the things here required, shall have life thereby."
and if it be by favour, it is not upon the account of merit. for then mercy would not be mercy.
yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in him, and not by the works of the law, by which there is no justification.
I find then a settled custom, that evil is objected in my way whenever I have a mind to act well:
for the christian dispensation of a spiritual life has set me free from the legal state of sin and death.
he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.
he that believeth on the son, hath a right to everlasting life: and he that disobeys the son, shall not enjoy life; but be expos'd to divine wrath.
but the scripture has declar'd all guilty of sin, that the blessing promised on condition of faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
1 John 5:11
Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son.
