Saul Defeats the Ammonites

､ וַיַּ֗עַל

way·ya·‘al,

And came up ､

נָחָשׁ֙

nā·ḥāš

הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔י

hā·‘am·mō·w·nî,

וַיִּ֖חַן

way·yi·ḥan

עַל־

‘al-

יָבֵ֣שׁ

yā·ḇêš

גִּלְעָ֑ד

gil·‘āḏ;

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

and said

כָּל־

kāl-

אַנְשֵׁ֤י

’an·šê

the men

יָבֵישׁ֙

yā·ḇêš

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ נָחָ֔שׁ

nā·ḥāš,

כְּרָת־

kə·rāṯ-

לָ֥נוּ

lā·nū

with us

בְרִ֖ית

ḇə·rîṯ

. וְנַעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃

wə·na·‘aḇ·ḏe·kā.

and we will serve you .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם

’ă·lê·hem,

נָחָשׁ֙

nā·ḥāš

הָעַמּוֹנִ֔י

hā·‘am·mō·w·nî,

בְּזֹאת֙

bə·zōṯ

On this [condition]

אֶכְרֹ֣ת

’eḵ·rōṯ

I will make [a covenant]

לָכֶ֔ם

lā·ḵem,

with you

בִּנְק֥וֹר

bin·qō·wr

that I may put out

לָכֶ֖ם

lā·ḵem

כָּל־

kāl-

､ עֵ֣ין

‘ên

eyes ､

יָמִ֑ין

yā·mîn;

וְשַׂמְתִּ֥יהָ

wə·śam·tî·hā

חֶרְפָּ֖ה

ḥer·pāh

עַל־

‘al-

on

כָּל־

kāl-

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

And said

אֵלָ֜יו

’ê·lāw

to him

זִקְנֵ֣י

ziq·nê

יָבֵ֗ישׁ

yā·ḇêš,

､ הֶ֤רֶף

he·rep̄

לָ֙נוּ֙

lā·nū

שִׁבְעַ֣ת

šiḇ·‘aṯ

יָמִ֔ים

yā·mîm,

וְנִשְׁלְחָה֙

wə·niš·lə·ḥāh

that we may send

מַלְאָכִ֔ים

mal·’ā·ḵîm,

בְּכֹ֖ל

bə·ḵōl

to all

גְּב֣וּל

gə·ḇūl

. יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

And then if

אֵ֥ין

’ên

[there is] no one

מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ

mō·wō·šî·a‘

אֹתָ֖נוּ

’ō·ṯā·nū

us

וְיָצָ֥אנוּ

wə·yā·ṣā·nū

and we will come out

. אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

’ê·le·ḵā.

to you .

וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

הַמַּלְאָכִים֙

ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm

גִּבְעַ֣ת

giḇ·‘aṯ

､ שָׁא֔וּל

šā·’ūl,

of Saul ､

וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ

way·ḏab·bə·rū

and told

הַדְּבָרִ֖ים

had·də·ḇā·rîm

the news

בְּאָזְנֵ֣י

bə·’ā·zə·nê

in the hearing

､ הָעָ֑ם

hā·‘ām;

of the people ､

וַיִּשְׂא֧וּ

way·yiś·’ū

and lifted up

כָל־

ḵāl

הָעָ֛ם

hā·‘ām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ קוֹלָ֖ם

qō·w·lām

their voices ､

. וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃

way·yiḇ·kū.

and wept .

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

And there was ､

שָׁא֗וּל

šā·’ūl,

בָּ֣א

bā

אַחֲרֵ֤י

’a·ḥă·rê

הַבָּקָר֙

hab·bā·qār

the herd

מִן־

min-

– הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה

haś·śā·ḏeh,

the field –

､ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said ､

שָׁא֔וּל

šā·’ūl,

מַה־

mah-

what [troubles]

לָּעָ֖ם

lā·‘ām

כִּ֣י

kî

؟ יִבְכּ֑וּ

yiḇ·kū;

וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־

way·sap·pə·rū-

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דִּבְרֵ֖י

diḇ·rê

the words of

אַנְשֵׁ֥י

’an·šê

the men

. יָבֵֽישׁ׃

yā·ḇêš.

וַתִּצְלַ֤ח

wat·tiṣ·laḥ

And came

רֽוּחַ־

rū·aḥ-

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

עַל־

‘al-

שָׁא֔וּל

šā·’ūl,

[בשמעו]

bə·šā·mə·‘ōw

-

(כְּשָׁמְע֖וֹ)

kə·šā·mə·‘ōw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים

had·də·ḇā·rîm

הָאֵ֑לֶּה

hā·’êl·leh;

וַיִּ֥חַר

way·yi·ḥar

and was aroused

אַפּ֖וֹ

’ap·pōw

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

וַיִּקַּח֩

way·yiq·qaḥ

So he took

צֶ֨מֶד

ṣe·meḏ

､ בָּקָ֜ר

bā·qār

of oxen ､

､ וַֽיְנַתְּחֵ֗הוּ

way·nat·tə·ḥê·hū,

and cut them in pieces ､

וַיְשַׁלַּ֞ח

way·šal·laḥ

and sent [them]

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

גְּב֣וּל

gə·ḇūl

יִשְׂרָאֵל֮

yiś·rā·’êl

בְּיַ֣ד

bə·yaḏ

by the hands

､ הַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים ׀

ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm

of messengers ､

､ לֵאמֹר֒

lê·mōr

אֲשֶׁר֩

’ă·šer

אֵינֶ֨נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū

not

יֹצֵ֜א

yō·ṣê

does go out to battle

אַחֲרֵ֤י

’a·ḥă·rê

with

שָׁאוּל֙

šā·’ūl

וְאַחַ֣ר

wə·’a·ḥar

and

､ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

šə·mū·’êl,

כֹּ֥ה

kōh

so

יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה

yê·‘ā·śeh

it shall be done

. לִבְקָר֑וֹ

liḇ·qā·rōw;

וַיִּפֹּ֤ל

way·yip·pōl

And fell

פַּֽחַד־

pa·ḥaḏ-

the fear

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הָעָ֔ם

hā·‘ām,

the people ､

וַיֵּצְא֖וּ

way·yê·ṣə·’ū

and they came out

כְּאִ֥ישׁ

kə·’îš

. אֶחָֽד׃

’e·ḥāḏ.

וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖ם

way·yip̄·qə·ḏêm

And when he numbered them

､ בְּבָ֑זֶק

bə·ḇā·zeq;

in Bezek ､

וַיִּהְי֤וּ

way·yih·yū

and were

בְנֵֽי־

ḇə·nê-

the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

yiś·rā·’êl

שְׁלֹ֣שׁ

šə·lōš

מֵא֣וֹת

mê·’ō·wṯ

､ אֶ֔לֶף

’e·lep̄,

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

and the men

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים

šə·lō·šîm

. אָֽלֶף׃

’ā·lep̄.

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

לַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים

lam·mal·’ā·ḵîm

to the messengers

､ הַבָּאִ֗ים

hab·bā·’îm,

כֹּ֤ה

kōh

תֹֽאמְרוּן֙

ṯō·mə·rūn

לְאִישׁ֙

lə·’îš

to the men

– יָבֵ֣ישׁ

yā·ḇêš

of –

גִּלְעָ֔ד

gil·‘āḏ,

､ מָחָ֛ר

mā·ḥār

תִּהְיֶֽה־

tih·yeh-

לָכֶ֥ם

lā·ḵem

. תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה

tə·šū·‘āh

[בחם]

bə·ḥōm

-

､ (כְּחֹ֣ם)

kə·ḥōm

By [the time] is hot ､

הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

and came

הַמַּלְאָכִ֗ים

ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm,

וַיַּגִּ֛ידוּ

way·yag·gî·ḏū

and reported [it]

לְאַנְשֵׁ֥י

lə·’an·šê

to the men

יָבֵ֖ישׁ

yā·ḇêš

. וַיִּשְׂמָֽחוּ׃

way·yiś·mā·ḥū.

and they were glad .

､ וַֽיֹּאמְרוּ֙

way·yō·mə·rū

Therefore said ､

אַנְשֵׁ֣י

’an·šê

the men

יָבֵ֔ישׁ

yā·ḇêš,

מָחָ֖ר

mā·ḥār

נֵצֵ֣א

nê·ṣê

we will come out

אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם

’ă·lê·ḵem;

to you

וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם

wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem

and you may do

לָּ֔נוּ

lā·nū,

with us

כְּכָל־

kə·ḵāl-

הַטּ֖וֹב

haṭ·ṭō·wḇ

. בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem.

to you .

way·hî

So it was

､ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת

mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ,

on the next day ､

וַיָּ֨שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

שָׁא֣וּל

šā·’ūl

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָעָם֮

hā·‘ām

שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה

šə·lō·šāh

– רָאשִׁים֒

rā·šîm

in companies –

וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

בְתוֹךְ־

ḇə·ṯō·wḵ-

הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙

ham·ma·ḥă·neh

of the camp

､ בְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶת

bə·’aš·mō·reṯ

in watch ､

הַבֹּ֔קֶר

hab·bō·qer,

וַיַּכּ֥וּ

way·yak·kū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עַמּ֖וֹן

‘am·mō·wn

עַד־

‘aḏ-

חֹ֣ם

ḥōm

the heat

. הַיּ֑וֹם

hay·yō·wm;

of the day .

､ וַיְהִ֤י

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙

han·niš·’ā·rîm

that those who survived

､ וַיָּפֻ֔צוּ

way·yā·p̄u·ṣū,

and were scattered ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

so that no

נִשְׁאֲרוּ־

niš·’ă·rū-

בָ֖ם

ḇām

שְׁנַ֥יִם

šə·na·yim

. יָֽחַד׃

yā·ḥaḏ.

Saul Confirmed as King

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

הָעָם֙

hā·‘ām

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

šə·mū·’êl,

מִ֣י

mî

who [is]

､ הָאֹמֵ֔ר

hā·’ō·mêr,

he who said ､

שָׁא֖וּל

šā·’ūl

יִמְלֹ֣ךְ

yim·lōḵ

עָלֵ֑ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū;

תְּנ֥וּ

tə·nū

､ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים

hā·’ă·nā·šîm

the men ､

. וּנְמִיתֵֽם׃

ū·nə·mî·ṯêm.

that we may put them to death .

､ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

But said ､

שָׁא֔וּל

šā·’ūl,

לֹֽא־

lō-

Not

יוּמַ֥ת

yū·maṯ

shall be put to death

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

､ בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

day ､

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

כִּ֥י

kî

הַיּ֛וֹם

hay·yō·wm

עָשָֽׂה־

‘ā·śāh-

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה

tə·šū·‘āh

. בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

bə·yiś·rā·’êl.

And said

שְׁמוּאֵל֙

šə·mū·’êl

אֶל־

､ הָעָ֔ם

the people ､

､ לְכ֖וּ

וְנֵלְכָ֣ה

wə·nê·lə·ḵāh

and let us go

､ הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל

hag·gil·gāl;

to Gilgal ､

וּנְחַדֵּ֥שׁ

ū·nə·ḥad·dêš

שָׁ֖ם

šām

. הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃

ham·mə·lū·ḵāh.

וַיֵּלְכ֨וּ

way·yê·lə·ḵū

כָל־

ḵāl

הָעָ֜ם

hā·‘ām

– הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל

hag·gil·gāl,

to Gilgal –

וַיַּמְלִכוּ֩

way·yam·li·ḵū

and they made king

שָׁ֨ם

šām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שָׁא֜וּל

šā·’ūl

לִפְנֵ֤י

lip̄·nê

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

– בַּגִּלְגָּ֔ל

bag·gil·gāl,

in Gilgal –

וַיִּזְבְּחוּ־

way·yiz·bə·ḥū-

and they made sacrifices

שָׁ֛ם

šām

זְבָחִ֥ים

zə·ḇā·ḥîm

of

שְׁלָמִ֖ים

šə·lā·mîm

peace offerings

לִפְנֵ֣י

lip̄·nê

– יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

וַיִּשְׂמַ֨ח

way·yiś·maḥ

שָׁ֥ם

šām

שָׁא֛וּל

šā·’ūl

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

אַנְשֵׁ֥י

’an·šê

the men

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל
