וַעֲמָלֵקִ֣י

that the Amalekite

פָֽשְׁט֗וּ

p̄ā·šə·ṭū,

אֶל־

’el-

､ נֶ֙גֶב֙

ne·ḡeḇ

the Negev ､

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

､ צִ֣קְלַ֔ג

ṣiq·laḡ,

וַיַּכּוּ֙

way·yak·kū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ צִ֣קְלַ֔ג

ṣiq·laḡ,

וַיִּשְׂרְפ֥וּ

way·yiś·rə·p̄ū

אֹתָ֖הּ

’ō·ṯāh

it

– בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

with fire –

וַיִּשְׁבּ֨וּ

way·yiš·bū

and had taken captive

אֶת־

’eṯ-

הַנָּשִׁ֤ים

אֲשֶׁר־

and those who [were]

､ מִקָּטֹ֣ן

וְעַד־

and to

גָּד֔וֹל

לֹ֥א

הֵמִ֖יתוּ

､ אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

､ וַיִּֽנְהֲג֔וּ

way·yin·hă·ḡū,

but carried [them] away ､

וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ

way·yê·lə·ḵū

and went

. לְדַרְכָּֽם׃

lə·ḏar·kām.

וַיָּבֹ֨א

way·yā·ḇō

דָוִ֤ד

ḏā·wiḏ

וַֽאֲנָשָׁיו֙

wa·’ă·nā·šāw

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and there it was ､

שְׂרוּפָ֖ה

śə·rū·p̄āh

– בָּאֵ֑שׁ

bā·’êš;

with fire –

､ וּנְשֵׁיהֶ֛ם

ū·nə·šê·hem

and their wives ､

､ וּבְנֵיהֶ֥ם

ū·ḇə·nê·hem

and their sons ､

､ וּבְנֹתֵיהֶ֖ם

ū·ḇə·nō·ṯê·hem

and their daughters ､

. נִשְׁבּֽוּ׃

had been taken captive .

וַיִּשָּׂ֨א

And lifted up

וְהָעָ֧ם

and the people

אֲשֶׁר־

אִתּ֛וֹ

with him

קוֹלָ֖ם

､ וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ

and wept ､

עַ֣ד

בָּהֶ֛ם

כֹּ֖חַ

. לִבְכּֽוֹת׃

to weep .

וּשְׁתֵּ֥י

And two

נְשֵֽׁי־

דָוִ֖ד

､ נִשְׁבּ֑וּ

niš·bū;

had been taken captive ､

אֲחִינֹ֙עַם֙

､ הַיִּזְרְעֵלִ֔ית

hay·yiz·rə·‘ê·lîṯ,

the Jezreelitess ､

וַאֲבִיגַ֕יִל

wa·’ă·ḇî·ḡa·yil

אֵ֖שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

נָבָ֥ל

nā·ḇāl

. הַֽכַּרְמְלִֽי׃

the Carmelite .

And was distressed –

and He answered

you shall overtake [them]

וְהַצֵּ֥ל

and without fail

. תַּצִּֽיל׃

taṣ·ṣîl.

recover [all] .

､ וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ

So went ､

דָּוִ֗ד

dā·wiḏ,

ה֚וּא

וְשֵׁשׁ־

and six

מֵא֥וֹת

אִישׁ֙

the men

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

and came

､ הַבְּשׂ֑וֹר

and where those who were left behind

But pursued ､

that they could not cross

. הַבְּשֽׂוֹר׃

וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ

way·yim·ṣə·’ū

אִישׁ־

מִצְרִי֙

､ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה

in the field ､

וַיִּקְח֥וּ

אֹת֖וֹ

וַיִּתְּנוּ־

and he ate –

וַיַּשְׁקֻ֖הוּ

and they let him drink

– מָֽיִם׃

וַיִּתְּנוּ־

and he said ､

an Egyptian ､

אָנֹ֗כִי

I [am]

עֶ֚בֶד

לְאִ֣ישׁ

עֲמָֽלֵקִ֔י

וַיַּעַזְבֵ֧נִי

and left me behind

אֲדֹנִ֛י

חָלִ֖יתִי

הַיּ֥וֹם

. שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

of the southern [area]

､ הַכְּרֵתִ֛י

of the Cherethites ､

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and in the [territory]

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

which [belongs]

､ לִֽיהוּדָ֖ה

lî·hū·ḏāh

to Judah ､

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and

נֶ֣גֶב

ne·ḡeḇ

of the southern [area]

– כָּלֵ֑ב

kā·lêḇ;

of Caleb –

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

צִקְלַ֖ג

ṣiq·laḡ

שָׂרַ֥פְנוּ

śā·rap̄·nū

. בָאֵֽשׁ׃

with fire .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

And said

אֵלָיו֙

’ê·lāw

to him

דָּוִ֔ד

הֲתוֹרִדֵ֖נִי

hă·ṯō·w·ri·ḏê·nî

can you take me down

אֶל־

’el-

to

؟ הַגְּד֣וּד

hag·gə·ḏūḏ

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

､ וַיֹּ֡אמֶר

so he said ､

הִשָּׁבְעָה֩

to me

､ בֵֽאלֹהִ֜ים

by God ､

אִם־

that you will neither

תְּמִיתֵ֗נִי

tə·mî·ṯê·nî,

that you will neither kill me

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

תַּסְגִּרֵ֙נִי֙

בְּיַד־

bə·yaḏ-

､ אֲדֹנִ֔י

of my master ､

וְאוֹרִֽדְךָ֖

and I will take you down

､ וַיֹּ֣רִדֵ֔הוּ

And when he had brought him down ､

and dancing ､

בְּכֹל֙

הַשָּׁלָ֣ל

הַגָּד֔וֹל

hag·gā·ḏō·wl,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לָקְח֛וּ

lā·qə·ḥū

מֵאֶ֥רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

､ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים

pə·liš·tîm

of the Philistines ､

וּמֵאֶ֥רֶץ

ū·mê·’e·reṣ

and from the land

. יְהוּדָֽה׃

of Judah .

וַיַּכֵּ֥ם

And attacked them

– לְמָֽחֳרָתָ֑ם

and spoil ､

וְעַ֛ד

לָקְח֖וּ

לָהֶ֑ם

הַכֹּ֖ל

And took

דָּוִ֔ד

אֶת־

הַצֹּ֖אן

haṣ·ṣōn

､ וְהַבָּקָ֑ר

wə·hab·bā·qār;

and herds ､

נָהֲג֗וּ

nā·hă·ḡū,

they had driven

לִפְנֵי֙

lip̄·nê

､ הַמִּקְנֶ֣ה

ham·miq·neh

[other] livestock ､

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

and said ､

זֶ֖ה

zeh

this [is]

שְׁלַ֥ל

šə·lal

. דָּוִֽד׃

dā·wiḏ.

The Spoils are Divided

וַיָּבֹ֣א

way·yā·ḇō

And came

דָוִ֗ד

ḏā·wiḏ,

אֶל־

’el-

to

מָאתַ֨יִם

mā·ṯa·yim

､ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים

hā·’ă·nā·šîm

the men ､

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

פִּגְּר֣וּ ׀

pig·gə·rū

had been so weary

מִלֶּ֣כֶת ׀

mil·le·ḵeṯ

that they could not follow

אַחֲרֵ֣י

’a·ḥă·rê

-

､ דָוִ֗ד

ḏā·wiḏ,

וַיֹּֽשִׁיבֻם֙

way·yō·šî·ḇum

and whom also they had made to stay

בְּנַ֣חַל

bə·na·ḥal

､ הַבְּשׂ֔וֹר

hab·bə·śō·wr,

the Besor ､

וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙

way·yê·ṣə·’ū

so they went out

לִקְרַ֣את

liq·raṯ

､ דָּוִ֔ד

dā·wiḏ,

וְלִקְרַ֖את

wə·liq·raṯ

and to meet

הָעָ֣ם

hā·‘ām

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אִתּ֑וֹ

’it·tōw;

with him

וַיִּגַּ֤שׁ

way·yig·gaš

and when came near

דָּוִד֙

dā·wiḏ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעָ֔ם

hā·‘ām,

the people ､

וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל

way·yiš·’al

and he greeted

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

. לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

we will give [any]

of the spoil

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

､ הִצַּ֑לְנוּ

we have recovered ､

אִשְׁתּוֹ֙

וְאֶת־

and

that they may lead [them] away ､

will heed

but

as his part [is]

הַיֹּרֵ֣ד

､ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֗ה

bam·mil·ḥā·māh,

to the battle ､

וּֽכְחֵ֛לֶק

ū·ḵə·ḥê·leq

so [shall] his part [be]

הַיֹּשֵׁ֥ב

hay·yō·šêḇ

עַל־

‘al-

by

– הַכֵּלִ֖ים

hak·kê·lîm

the supplies –

יַחְדָּ֥ו

yaḥ·dāw

. יַחֲלֹֽקוּ׃

ya·ḥă·lō·qū.

they shall share .

So it was

. מֵֽהַיּ֥וֹם

mê·hay·yō·wm

הַה֖וּא

ha·hū

､ וָמָ֑עְלָה

wā·mā·‘ə·lāh;

and forward ､

וַיְשִׂמֶ֜הָ

way·śi·me·hā

and he made it

לְחֹ֤ק

lə·ḥōq

וּלְמִשְׁפָּט֙

ū·lə·miš·pāṭ

and an ordinance

לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

lə·yiś·rā·’êl,

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

to

הַיּ֥וֹם

hay·yō·wm

. הַזֶּֽה׃

haz·zeh.

､ צִ֣קְלַ֔ג

וַיְשַׁלַּ֧ח

and he sent [some]

מֵֽהַשָּׁלָ֛ל

mê·haš·šā·lāl

of the spoil

לְזִקְנֵ֥י

lə·ziq·nê

to the elders

､ יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

of Judah ､

､ לְרֵעֵ֣הוּ

lə·rê·‘ê·hū

to his friends ､

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

לָכֶם֙

lā·ḵem

בְּרָכָ֔ה

bə·rā·ḵāh,

מִשְּׁלַ֖ל

miš·šə·lal

אֹיְבֵ֥י

’ō·yə·ḇê

of the enemies of

– יְהוָֽה׃

בְּבֵֽית־

the Negev Ramoth ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

and [those] who [were]

､ בְּיַתִּֽר׃

bə·yat·tir.

in Jattir ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֧ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

､ בַּעֲרֹעֵ֛ר

ba·‘ă·rō·‘êr

in Aroer ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

､ בְּשִֽׂפְמ֖וֹת

bə·śip̄·mō·wṯ

in Siphmoth ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

､ בְּאֶשְׁתְּמֹֽעַ׃

bə·’eš·tə·mō·a‘.

in Eshtemoa ､

and [those] who [were]

בְּעָרֵ֥י

bə·‘ā·rê

in the cities

､ הַקֵּינִֽי׃

haq·qê·nî.

of the Kenite ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֧ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who

､ בְּחָרְמָ֛ה

bə·ḥā·rə·māh

[were] in Hormah ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

בְּבוֹר־

bə·ḇō·wr-

in

､ עָשָׁ֖ן

‘ā·šān

in Chorashan ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

､ בַּעֲתָֽךְ׃

ba·‘ă·ṯāḵ.

in Athach ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

and [those] who [were]

､ בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן

bə·ḥeḇ·rō·wn;

in Hebron ､

וּֽלְכָל־

ū·lə·ḵāl-

and to all

הַמְּקֹמ֛וֹת

ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

. הִתְהַלֶּךְ־

hiṯ·hal·leḵ-

were accustomed to rove .
