the ark
בְּרִית־

of the covenant of
יְהוָ֛ה

､ צְבָא֖וֹת

– הַכְּרֻבִ֑ים

[between] the cherubim –

And they said ､

יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ

will deliver us of

؟ הָאֱלֹהִ֥ים
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm
gods ؟
הָאַדִּירִ֖ים
hā·’ad·dî·rîm
הָאֵ֑לֶּה
hā·’êl·leh;
אֵ֧לֶּה

הֵ֣ם
hêm
הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,
the gods
הַמַּכִּ֧ים
ham·mak·kîm
אֶת־

מִצְרַ֛יִם

. בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

Be strong ､

､ לַֽאֲנָשִׁים֙

like men ､
､ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים

and fight .

､ וַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ

So fought ､
פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים
p̄ə·liš·tîm,
､ וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף
way·yin·nā·ḡep̄
and was defeated ､
יִשְׂרָאֵל֙
yiś·rā·’êl
וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙
way·yā·nu·sū
and fled
אִ֣ישׁ
’îš
– לְאֹהָלָ֔יו
lə·’ō·hā·lāw,
to his tent –
וַתְּהִ֥י
wat·tə·hî
– הַמַּכָּ֖ה
ham·mak·kāh
a slaughter –
גְּדוֹלָ֣ה
gə·ḏō·w·lāh
מְאֹ֑ד
mə·’ōḏ;
וַיִּפֹּל֙
way·yip·pōl
מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
mî·yiś·rā·’êl,
שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים
šə·lō·šîm
אֶ֖לֶף

. רַגְלִֽי׃

חָפְנִ֖י

a man
בִּנְיָמִן֙

､ מֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה
mê·ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh,
from the battle line ､
וַיָּבֹ֥א
way·yā·ḇō
and came
שִׁלֹ֖ה
ši·lōh
בַּיּ֣וֹם
bay·yō·wm
הַה֑וּא
ha·hū;
וּמַדָּ֣יו
ū·mad·dāw
and with his clothes
､ קְרֻעִ֔ים
qə·ru·‘îm,
torn ､
וַאֲדָמָ֖ה
wa·’ă·ḏā·māh
and dirt
עַל־
‘al-
on
. רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃
rō·šōw.

､ וַיָּב֗וֹא

And when he came ､
､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

and there was ､
עֵ֠לִי

יֹשֵׁ֨ב

עַֽל־
‘al-
on
הַכִּסֵּ֜א

into the city ､

עֵלִי֙

､ הַצְּעָקָ֔ה
haṣ·ṣə·‘ā·qāh,
of the outcry ､
､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר
way·yō·mer
and he said ､
מֶ֛ה
meh
ק֥וֹל

the sound
؟ הֶהָמ֖וֹן
he·hā·mō·wn
of tumult ؟
הַזֶּ֑ה
haz·zeh;
וְהָאִ֣ישׁ
wə·hā·’îš
and the man
､ מִהַ֔ר
mi·har,
וַיָּבֹ֖א
way·yā·ḇō
and came
וַיַּגֵּ֥ד
way·yag·gêḏ
and told
. לְעֵלִֽי׃
lə·‘ê·lî.

And Eli

was old –

וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה

and eight
שָׁנָ֑ה
šā·nāh;
וְעֵינָ֣יו
wə·‘ê·nāw
and his gaze
､ קָ֔מָה
qā·māh,
וְלֹ֥א
wə·lō
that not
יָכ֖וֹל
yā·ḵō·wl
. לִרְאֽוֹת׃
lir·’ō·wṯ.

the battle ､
וַאֲנִ֕י

the battle line .

the Philistines ､

הָיְתָ֣ה

､ בָעָ֑ם

among the people ､

the seat
אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית

בְּעַ֣ד ׀

the side
､ הַשַּׁ֗עַר
haš·ša·‘ar,
of the gate ､
､ וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר
wat·tiš·šā·ḇêr
and was broken ､
מַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙
map̄·raq·tōw
､ וַיָּמֹ֔ת
way·yā·mōṯ,
and he died ､
כִּֽי־
kî-
זָקֵ֥ן
zā·qên
､ הָאִ֖ישׁ
hā·’îš
the man ､
. וְכָבֵ֑ד
wə·ḵā·ḇêḏ;
and heavy .
וְה֛וּא
wə·hū
And he
שָׁפַ֥ט
šā·p̄aṭ
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

אַרְבָּעִ֥ים
’ar·bā·‘îm
. שָׁנָֽה׃

､ וְכַלָּת֣וֹ

wife ､
פִּינְחָס֮

､ הָרָ֣ה

– לָלַת֒

[due] to be delivered –
וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע

אֶת־
’eṯ-

הַשְּׁמֻעָ֔ה
haš·šə·mu·‘āh,
the news
אֶל־
’el-
､ הִלָּקַח֙
hil·lā·qaḥ
אֲר֣וֹן
’ă·rō·wn
the ark
הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,
of God
､ וּמֵ֥ת
ū·mêṯ
חָמִ֖יהָ
ḥā·mî·hā
וְאִישָׁ֑הּ

וַתִּכְרַ֣ע

– וַתֵּ֔לֶד

and gave birth –

And about the time
מוּתָ֗הּ
mū·ṯāh,
וַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙
wat·tə·ḏab·bê·rə·nāh
and said
הַנִּצָּב֣וֹת
han·niṣ·ṣā·ḇō·wṯ
עָלֶ֔יהָ
‘ā·le·hā,
to her
– אַל־
’al-
not –
תִּֽירְאִ֖י
tî·rə·’î
do fear
כִּ֣י
kî
. בֵ֣ן
ḇên
a son .
יָלָ֑דְתְּ
yā·lā·ḏət;
､ וְלֹ֥א
wə·lō
but not ､
עָנְתָ֖ה
‘ā·nə·ṯāh
וְלֹא־
wə·lō-
שָׁ֥תָה
šā·ṯāh
. לִבָּֽהּ׃

לַנַּ֗עַר
lan·na·‘ar,
the child
אִֽי־
’î-

､ כָבוֹד֙

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר
lê·mōr,
saying ､
גָּלָ֥ה
gā·lāh
כָב֖וֹד
ḵā·ḇō·wḏ
the glory
מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
mî·yiś·rā·’êl;
אֶל־
’el-
､ הִלָּקַח֙
hil·lā·qaḥ
אֲר֣וֹן
’ă·rō·wn
the ark
הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,
of God
וְאֶל־
wə·’el-
חָמִ֖יהָ
ḥā·mî·hā
. וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃

and her husband .
