the men
קִרְיַ֣ת

יְעָרִ֗ים
yə·‘ā·rîm,
וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙
way·ya·‘ă·lū
and took
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
אֲר֣וֹן
’ă·rō·wn
the ark
､ יְהוָ֔ה
Yah·weh,
of Yahweh ､
וַיָּבִ֣אוּ
way·yā·ḇi·’ū
אֹת֔וֹ
’ō·ṯōw,
it
אֶל־
’el-
בֵּ֥ית
bêṯ
the house
אֲבִינָדָ֖ב
’ă·ḇî·nā·ḏāḇ
､ בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה
bag·giḇ·‘āh;
on the hill ､
וְאֶת־
wə·’eṯ-
and
אֶלְעָזָ֤ר
’el·‘ā·zār
בְּנוֹ֙
bə·nōw
קִדְּשׁ֔וּ
qid·də·šū,
לִשְׁמֹ֖ר
liš·mōr
to keep
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
אֲר֥וֹן
’ă·rō·wn
the ark
. יְהוָֽה׃
Yah·weh.
of Yahweh .

– וַיִּרְבּוּ֙

and long –
הַיָּמִ֔ים
hay·yā·mîm,
וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ
way·yih·yū
and it was [there]
עֶשְׂרִ֣ים
‘eś·rîm
– שָׁנָ֑ה
šā·nāh;
years –
וַיִּנָּה֛וּ
way·yin·nā·hū
כָּל־
kāl-
בֵּ֥ית
bêṯ
the house
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל
yiś·rā·’êl
אַחֲרֵ֥י
’a·ḥă·rê
. יְהוָֽה׃

､ לֵאמֹר֒

､ לְבַבְכֶ֗ם

אַתֶּ֤ם
’at·tem
שָׁבִים֙
šā·ḇîm
אֶל־

to
יְהוָ֔ה
Yah·weh,
הָסִ֜ירוּ
hā·sî·rū
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
אֱלֹהֵ֧י
’ĕ·lō·hê
הַנֵּכָ֛ר
han·nê·ḵār
מִתּוֹכְכֶ֖ם
mit·tō·wḵ·ḵem
וְהָעַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת
wə·hā·‘aš·tā·rō·wṯ;
and the Ashtoreths
וְהָכִ֨ינוּ
wə·hā·ḵî·nū
לְבַבְכֶ֤ם
lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem
אֶל־
’el-
､ יְהוָה֙
Yah·weh
Yahweh ､
וְעִבְדֻ֣הוּ
wə·‘iḇ·ḏu·hū
– לְבַדּ֔וֹ
lə·ḇad·dōw,
only –
וְיַצֵּ֥ל
wə·yaṣ·ṣêl
and He will deliver
אֶתְכֶ֖ם
’eṯ·ḵem
מִיַּ֥ד
mî·yaḏ
. פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃
pə·liš·tîm.
of the Philistines .

the sons

הַבְּעָלִ֖ים
hab·bə·‘ā·lîm
the Baals
וְאֶת־
wə·’eṯ-
and
､ הָעַשְׁתָּרֹ֑ת
hā·‘aš·tā·rōṯ;
the Ashtoreths ､
וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ
way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū
and served
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
יְהוָ֖ה
Yah·weh
. לְבַדּֽוֹ׃
lə·ḇad·dōw.

And said ､

､ הַמִּצְפָּ֑תָה
ham·miṣ·pā·ṯāh;
to Mizpah ､
וְאֶתְפַּלֵּ֥ל
wə·’eṯ·pal·lêl
and I will pray
בַּעַדְכֶ֖ם
ba·‘aḏ·ḵem
אֶל־
’el-
to
. יְהוָֽה׃
Yah·weh.

וַיִּקָּבְצ֣וּ
way·yiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū
､ הַ֠מִּצְפָּתָה
ham·miṣ·pā·ṯāh
at Mizpah ､
וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־
way·yiš·’ă·ḇū-
and drew
､ מַ֜יִם
ma·yim
water ､
וַֽיִּשְׁפְּכ֣וּ ׀
way·yiš·pə·ḵū
and poured [it] out
לִפְנֵ֣י
lip̄·nê
､ יְהוָ֗ה
Yah·weh
Yahweh ､
וַיָּצ֙וּמוּ֙
way·yā·ṣū·mū
､ בַּיּ֣וֹם
bay·yō·wm
day ､
הַה֔וּא
ha·hū,
וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ
way·yō·mə·rū
and said
､ שָׁ֔ם
šām,
there ､
חָטָ֖אנוּ
ḥā·ṭā·nū
. לַיהוָ֑ה
Yah·weh;
וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֧ט
way·yiš·pōṭ
And judged
שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל
šə·mū·’êl
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
בְּנֵ֥י
bə·nê
the sons
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל
yiś·rā·’êl
. בַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃
bam·miṣ·pāh.
at Mizpah .

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ
way·yiš·mə·‘ū
פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים

כִּֽי־

הִתְקַבְּצ֤וּ
hiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū
בְנֵֽי־
ḇə·nê-
the sons
יִשְׂרָאֵל֙
yiś·rā·’êl
､ הַמִּצְפָּ֔תָה
ham·miṣ·pā·ṯāh,
at Mizpah ､
וַיַּעֲל֥וּ
way·ya·‘ă·lū
and went up
סַרְנֵֽי־
sar·nê-
the lords
פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים
p̄ə·liš·tîm
אֶל־
’el-
. יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
yiś·rā·’êl;
וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙
way·yiš·mə·‘ū
And when heard [of it]
בְּנֵ֣י
bə·nê
the sons
יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
yiś·rā·’êl,
וַיִּֽרְא֖וּ
way·yir·’ū
מִפְּנֵ֥י
mip·pə·nê
of
. פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ

So said
בְנֵֽי־

the sons
יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

אֶל־
’el-
to
､ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

Samuel ､
אַל־
’al-
not
תַּחֲרֵ֣שׁ
ta·ḥă·rêš
מִמֶּ֔נּוּ
mim·men·nū,
for us
מִזְּעֹ֖ק
miz·zə·‘ōq
to cry out
אֶל־
’el-
to
יְהוָ֣ה
Yah·weh
אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ
’ĕ·lō·hê·nū;
וְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּ
wə·yō·ši·‘ê·nū
that He may save us
מִיַּ֥ד
mî·yaḏ
. פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

of the Philistines .

וַיִּקַּ֣ח
way·yiq·qaḥ
And took
שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל
šə·mū·’êl,
､ טְלֵ֤ה
ṭə·lêh
lamb ､
חָלָב֙
ḥā·lāḇ
אֶחָ֔ד
’e·ḥāḏ,
a
[ויעלה]
way·ya·‘ă·leh
-
(וַיַּעֲלֵ֧הוּ)
way·ya·‘ă·lê·hū
and offered [it]
עוֹלָ֛ה
‘ō·w·lāh
כָּלִ֖יל
kā·lîl
– לַֽיהוָ֑ה
Yah·weh;
to Yahweh –
וַיִּזְעַ֨ק
way·yiz·‘aq
שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל
šə·mū·’êl
אֶל־
’el-
to
יְהוָה֙
Yah·weh
בְּעַ֣ד
bə·‘aḏ
– יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
yiś·rā·’êl,
Israel –
וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֖הוּ
way·ya·‘ă·nê·hū
. יְהוָֽה׃

וַיְהִ֤י
way·hî
And as was
שְׁמוּאֵל֙
šə·mū·’êl
מַעֲלֶ֣ה
ma·‘ă·leh
､ הָעוֹלָ֔ה
hā·‘ō·w·lāh,
the burnt offering ､
וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים
ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm
and the Philistines
נִגְּשׁ֔וּ
nig·gə·šū,
לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה
lam·mil·ḥā·māh
. בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
bə·yiś·rā·’êl;
וַיַּרְעֵ֣ם
way·yar·‘êm
יְהוָ֣ה ׀
Yah·weh
בְּקוֹל־
bə·qō·wl-
with a thunder
גָּ֠דוֹל
gā·ḏō·wl
בַּיּ֨וֹם
bay·yō·wm
הַה֤וּא
ha·hū
עַל־
‘al-
､ פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙
pə·liš·tîm
the Philistines ､
וַיְהֻמֵּ֔ם
way·hum·mêm,
וַיִּנָּגְפ֖וּ
way·yin·nā·ḡə·p̄ū
לִפְנֵ֥י
lip̄·nê
. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
yiś·rā·’êl.

וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ
way·yê·ṣə·’ū
And went out
אַנְשֵׁ֤י

the men
יִשְׂרָאֵל֙
yiś·rā·’êl
מִן־
min-
､ הַמִּצְפָּ֔ה
ham·miṣ·pāh,
Mizpah ､
וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ
way·yir·də·p̄ū
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
､ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים
pə·liš·tîm;
the Philistines ､
וַיַּכּ֕וּם
way·yak·kūm
עַד־
‘aḏ-
מִתַּ֖חַת
mit·ta·ḥaṯ
as far as
לְבֵ֥ית
lə·ḇêṯ
. כָּֽר׃

וַיִּקַּ֨ח
way·yiq·qaḥ
And took
שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל

､ אֶ֣בֶן
’e·ḇen
stone ､
אַחַ֗ת
’a·ḥaṯ,
a
וַיָּ֤שֶׂם
way·yā·śem
and set [it] up
בֵּֽין־
bên-
הַמִּצְפָּה֙
ham·miṣ·pāh
וּבֵ֣ין
ū·ḇên
and
､ הַשֵּׁ֔ן
haš·šên,
Shen ､
וַיִּקְרָ֥א
way·yiq·rā
and called
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
שְׁמָ֖הּ
šə·māh
אֶ֣בֶן
’e·ḇen
-
､ הָעָ֑זֶר
hā·‘ā·zer;
､ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר
way·yō·mar
and saying ､
עַד־
‘aḏ-
הֵ֖נָּה
hên·nāh
עֲזָרָ֥נוּ
‘ă·zā·rā·nū
. יְהוָֽה׃
Yah·weh.

､ וַיִּכָּֽנְעוּ֙

So were subdued ､
הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים
hap·pə·liš·tîm,
וְלֹא־
wə·lō-
and not
יָסְפ֣וּ
yā·sə·p̄ū
ע֔וֹד
‘ō·wḏ,
לָב֖וֹא
lā·ḇō·w
בִּגְב֣וּל
biḡ·ḇūl
. יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
yiś·rā·’êl;
of Israel .
וַתְּהִ֤י
wat·tə·hî
And was
יַד־
yaḏ-
the hand
יְהוָה֙
Yah·weh
בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים

כֹּ֖ל

the days
