וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

and said

to him

שְׁנֵ֣י

אֲנָשִׁ֗ים

’ă·nā·šîm,

הָיוּ֙

hā·yū

– בְּעִ֣יר

bə·‘îr

in city –

אֶחָ֔ת

’e·ḥāṯ,

אֶחָ֥ד

’e·ḥāḏ

､ עָשִׁ֖יר

‘ā·šîr

rich ､

וְאֶחָ֥ד

wə·’e·ḥāḏ

and one

. רָֽאשׁ׃

rāš.

לְעָשִׁ֗יר

lə·‘ā·šîr,

The rich [man]

הָיָ֛ה

hā·yāh

צֹ֥אן

ṣōn

וּבָקָ֖ר

ū·ḇā·qār

הַרְבֵּ֥ה

har·bêh

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

וְלָרָ֣שׁ

wə·lā·rāš

But the poor [man]

אֵֽין־

’ên-

[had] not

､ כֹּ֗ל

kōl,

כִּי֩

kî

אִם־

’im-

､ כִּבְשָׂ֨ה

kiḇ·śāh

אַחַ֤ת

’a·ḥaṯ

קְטַנָּה֙

qə·ṭan·nāh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

קָנָ֔ה

qā·nāh,

– וַיְחַיֶּ֕הָ

way·ḥay·ye·hā

and nourished –

וַתִּגְדַּ֥ל

wat·tiḡ·dal

and it grew up

עִמּ֛וֹ

‘im·mōw

with him

וְעִם־

wə·‘im-

and with

– בָּנָ֖יו

bā·nāw

his children –

יַחְדָּ֑ו

yaḥ·dāw;

､ מִפִּתּ֨וֹ

mip·pit·tōw

of his own food ､

תֹאכַ֜ל

ṯō·ḵal

it ate

､ וּמִכֹּס֤וֹ

ū·mik·kō·sōw

and from his own cup ､

תִשְׁתֶּה֙

ṯiš·teh

､ וּבְחֵיק֣וֹ

ū·ḇə·ḥê·qōw

and in his bosom ､

תִשְׁכָּ֔ב

ṯiš·kāḇ,

וַתְּהִי־

wat·tə·hî-

and it was

ל֖וֹ

lōw

to him

. כְּבַֽת׃

kə·ḇaṯ.

like a daughter .

וַיָּ֣בֹא

way·yā·ḇō

And came

הֵלֶךְ֮

hê·leḵ

､ לְאִ֣ישׁ

lə·’îš

to man ､

הֶֽעָשִׁיר֒

he·‘ā·šîr

the rich

וַיַּחְמֹ֗ל

way·yaḥ·mōl,

and who refused

לָקַ֤חַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

מִצֹּאנוֹ֙

miṣ·ṣō·nōw

from his own flock

､ וּמִבְּקָר֔וֹ

ū·mib·bə·qā·rōw,

and from his own herd ､

לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

לָאֹרֵ֖חַ

lā·’ō·rê·aḥ

for the wayfaring man

הַבָּא־

hab·bā-

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

to him

וַיִּקַּ֗ח

way·yiq·qaḥ,

but he took

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ כִּבְשַׂת֙

kiḇ·śaṯ

lamb ､

הָאִ֣ישׁ

hā·’îš

of the man

הָרָ֔אשׁ

hā·rāš,

וַֽיַּעֲשֶׂ֔הָ

way·ya·‘ă·śe·hā,

and prepared it

לָאִ֖ישׁ

lā·’îš

הַבָּ֥א

hab·bā

. אֵלָֽיו׃

’ê·lāw.

to him .

וַיִּֽחַר־

way·yi·ḥar-

אַ֥ף

’ap̄

דָּוִ֛ד

dā·wiḏ

– בָּאִ֖ישׁ

bā·’îš

against the man –

מְאֹ֑ד

mə·’ōḏ;

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

and he said

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ נָתָ֔ן

nā·ṯān,

､ חַי־

ḥay-

[As] lives ､

יְהוָ֕ה

Yah·weh

– כִּ֣י

kî

בֶן־

ḇen-

-

מָ֔וֶת

mā·weṯ,

shall surely die

הָאִ֖ישׁ

hā·’îš

the man

הָעֹשֶׂ֥ה

hā·‘ō·śeh

. זֹֽאת׃

zōṯ.

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

And

הַכִּבְשָׂ֖ה

hak·kiḇ·śāh

יְשַׁלֵּ֣ם

yə·šal·lêm

he shall restore

､ אַרְבַּעְתָּ֑יִם

’ar·ba‘·tā·yim;

עֵ֗קֶב

‘ê·qeḇ,

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

עָשָׂה֙

‘ā·śāh

he did

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַדָּבָ֣ר

had·dā·ḇār

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

וְעַ֖ל

wə·‘al

and

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

and I

הִצַּלְתִּ֖יךָ

מִיַּ֥ד

– שָׁאֽוּל׃

of Saul –

וָאֶתְּנָ֨ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

and I gave

לְךָ֜

אֶת־

､ בֵּ֣ית

אֲדֹנֶ֗יךָ

’ă·ḏō·ne·ḵā,

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

נְשֵׁ֤י

nə·šê

אֲדֹנֶ֙יךָ֙

’ă·ḏō·ne·ḵā

､ בְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָ

bə·ḥê·qe·ḵā,

into your keeping ､

וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

and gave

לְךָ֔

lə·ḵā,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

– וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה

wî·hū·ḏāh;

and Judah –

וְאִ֨ם־

wə·’im-

and if [that had been]

､ מְעָ֔ט

mə·‘āṭ,

וְאֹסִ֥פָה

wə·’ō·si·p̄āh

and I would have given

לְּךָ֖

lə·ḵā

כָּהֵ֥נָּה

kā·hên·nāh

. וְכָהֵֽנָּה׃

wə·ḵā·hên·nāh.

and like them .

מַדּ֜וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

בָּזִ֣יתָ ׀

bā·zî·ṯā

have you despised

אֶת־

’eṯ-

דְּבַ֣ר

də·ḇar

the commandment

､ יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת

הָרַע֮

[בעינו]

לָקַ֥חְתָּ

you have taken [to be]

､ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה

wife ､

וְאֹת֣וֹ

wə·’ō·ṯōw

and him

הָרַ֔גְתָּ

hā·raḡ·tā,

בְּחֶ֖רֶב

bə·ḥe·reḇ

with the sword

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

of the sons

. עַמּֽוֹן׃

of Ammon .

וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

לֹא־

from your house –

you have despised Me

the wife

אוּרִיָּ֣ה

הַחִתִּ֔י

before your eyes ､

וְנָתַתִּ֖י

and give [them]

to your neighbor ､

וְשָׁכַב֙

wə·šā·ḵaḇ

and he shall lie

עִם־

with

נָשֶׁ֔יךָ

לְעֵינֵ֖י

in the sight

הַשֶּׁ֥מֶשׁ

of sun

. הַזֹּֽאת׃

and went in

and lay on

､ וַיָּקֻ֜מוּ

So arose [and went] ､

from the ground ､

､ וַיִּרְחַ֣ץ

and washed ､

וַיָּ֗סֶךְ

and anointed himself

וַיְחַלֵּף֙

way·ḥal·lêp̄

his clothes ､

וַיָּבֹ֥א

and he went into

בֵית־

of Yahweh ､

. וַיִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּ

way·yiš·tā·ḥū;

and worshiped .

וַיָּבֹא֙

way·yā·ḇō

And he went

אֶל־

’el-

to

– בֵּית֔וֹ

bê·ṯōw,

his own house –

､ וַיִּשְׁאַ֕ל

way·yiš·’al

and when he requested ､

וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ

way·yā·śî·mū

ל֛וֹ

lōw

לֶ֖חֶם

le·ḥem

. וַיֹּאכַֽל׃

way·yō·ḵal.

and he ate .

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

And said

עֲבָדָיו֙

אֵלָ֔יו

’ê·lāw,

to him

מָֽה־

māh-

what [is]

הַדָּבָ֥ר

had·dā·ḇār

הַזֶּ֖ה

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

؟ עָשִׂ֑יתָה

you have done ؟

[while he was] alive –

and ate

And he said ､

､ חַ֔י

ḥay,

צַ֖מְתִּי

ṣam·tî

– וָֽאֶבְכֶּ֑ה

wā·’eḇ·keh;

and wept –

כִּ֤י

kî

､ אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙

’ā·mar·tî

I said ､

מִ֣י

mî

יוֹדֵ֔עַ

yō·w·ḏê·a‘,

can tell [whether]

[יחנני]

yə·ḥān·na·nî

(וְחַנַּ֥נִי)

will be gracious to me

､ בְרַבָּ֔ה

לָכַ֖דְתִּי

of the people

וַחֲנֵ֥ה

wa·ḥă·nêh

עַל־

‘al-

､ הָעִ֖יר

the city ､

וְלָכְדָ֑הּ

wə·lā·ḵə·ḏāh;

and take it

So gathered together

. וַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ׃

way·yil·kə·ḏāh.

and took it .

וַיִּקַּ֣ח

And he took

עֲטֶֽרֶת־

‘ă·ṭe·reṯ-

מַלְכָּם֩

mal·kām

מֵעַ֨ל

mê·‘al

､ רֹאשׁ֜וֹ

וּמִשְׁקָלָ֨הּ

ū·miš·qā·lāh

and Its weight [was]

כִּכַּ֤ר

kik·kar

זָהָב֙

zā·hāḇ

– וְאֶ֣בֶן

wə·’e·ḇen

and with stones –

יְקָרָ֔ה

yə·qā·rāh,

וַתְּהִ֖י

wat·tə·hî

and it was [set]

עַל־

‘al-

on

. רֹ֣אשׁ

rōš

דָּוִ֑ד

dā·wiḏ;

וּשְׁלַ֥ל

ū·šə·lal

and the spoil

הָעִ֛יר

hā·‘îr

of the city

הוֹצִ֖יא

hō·w·ṣî

הַרְבֵּ֥ה

har·bêh

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

And

הָעָ֨ם

hā·‘ām

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

בָּ֜הּ

in it

הוֹצִ֗יא

hō·w·ṣî,

וַיָּ֣שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

and put [them to work]

､ בַּ֠מְּגֵרָה

bam·mə·ḡê·rāh

with saws ､

וּבַחֲרִצֵ֨י

ū·ḇa·ḥă·ri·ṣê

､ הַבַּרְזֶ֜ל

hab·bar·zel

iron ､

וּֽבְמַגְזְרֹ֣ת

ū·ḇə·maḡ·zə·rōṯ

and axes

､ הַבַּרְזֶ֗ל

hab·bar·zel,

iron ､

וְהֶעֱבִ֤יר

wə·he·‘ĕ·ḇîr

and made cross over

אוֹתָם֙

’ō·w·ṯām

[במלכן]

bam·mal·ken

. (בַּמַּלְבֵּ֔ן)

bam·mal·bên,

to the brick works .

וְכֵ֣ן

wə·ḵên

So

יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה

ya·‘ă·śeh,

he did

לְכֹ֖ל

to all

עָרֵ֣י

‘ā·rê

בְנֵֽי־

ḇə·nê-

of the sons

. עַמּ֑וֹן

‘am·mō·wn;

of Ammon .

וַיָּ֧שָׁב

way·yā·šāḇ

דָּוִ֛ד

dā·wiḏ

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

. יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃
