וַיְכֻלּ֛וּ

Thus were finished

הַשָּׁמַ֥יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

וְהָאָ֖רֶץ

wə·hā·’ā·reṣ

and the earth

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

. צְבָאָֽם׃

ṣə·ḇā·’ām.

the host of them .

וַיְכַ֤ל

way·ḵal

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on the day

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î,

מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ

mə·laḵ·tōw

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

– עָשָׂ֑ה

‘ā·śāh;

He had done –

וַיִּשְׁבֹּת֙

way·yiš·bōṯ

and He rested

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on the day

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î,

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ

mə·laḵ·tōw

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. עָשָֽׂה׃

‘ā·śāh.

וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ

way·ḇā·reḵ

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

י֣וֹם

yō·wm

､ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î,

the seventh ､

וַיְקַדֵּ֖שׁ

way·qad·dêš

and He sanctified

אֹת֑וֹ

’ō·ṯōw;

it

כִּ֣י

kî

ב֤וֹ

ḇōw

in it

שָׁבַת֙

šā·ḇaṯ

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

מְלַאכְתּ֔וֹ

mə·laḵ·tōw,

the work

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

בָּרָ֥א

bā·rā

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

. לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ.

and accomplished .

The Creation of Man

אֵ֣לֶּה

תוֹלְד֧וֹת

ṯō·wl·ḏō·wṯ

the generations

הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

וְהָאָ֖רֶץ

wə·hā·’ā·reṣ

and the earth

､ בְּהִבָּֽרְאָ֑ם

bə·hib·bā·rə·’ām;

when they were created ､

בְּי֗וֹם

bə·yō·wm,

in the day

עֲשׂ֛וֹת

‘ă·śō·wṯ

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶ֥רֶץ

’e·reṣ

､ וְשָׁמָֽיִם׃

wə·šā·mā·yim.

and the heavens ､

וְכֹ֣ל ׀

wə·ḵōl

And any

שִׂ֣יחַ

śî·aḥ

הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה

haś·śā·ḏeh,

of the field

טֶ֚רֶם

ṭe·rem

יִֽהְיֶ֣ה

yih·yeh

､ בָאָ֔רֶץ

ḇā·’ā·reṣ,

in the earth ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and any

עֵ֥שֶׂב

‘ê·śeḇ

הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה

haś·śā·ḏeh

of the field

טֶ֣רֶם

ṭe·rem

､ יִצְמָ֑ח

yiṣ·māḥ;

כִּי֩

הִמְטִ֜יר

him·ṭîr

had caused it to rain

יְהוָ֤ה

אֱלֹהִים֙

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

the earth ､

וְאָדָ֣ם

wə·’ā·ḏām

and man

אַ֔יִן

’a·yin,

[there was] not

לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד

אֶת־

. הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh.

the ground .

וְאֵ֖ד

wə·’êḏ

But a mist

יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה

ya·‘ă·leh

מִן־

min-

､ הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

the earth ､

וְהִשְׁקָ֖ה

wə·hiš·qāh

אֶֽת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

פְּנֵֽי־

pə·nê-

. הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh.

of the ground .

וַיִּיצֶר֩

way·yî·ṣer

יְהוָ֨ה

הָֽאָדָ֗ם

עָפָר֙

[from] the dust

מִן־

､ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה

the ground ､

וַיִּפַּ֥ח

way·yip·paḥ

בְּאַפָּ֖יו

bə·’ap·pāw

into his nostrils

נִשְׁמַ֣ת

niš·maṯ

– חַיִּ֑ים

ḥay·yîm;

of life –

וַֽיְהִ֥י

way·hî

הָֽאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man

לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ

lə·ne·p̄eš

. חַיָּֽה׃

ḥay·yāh.

The Planting of the Garden

וַיִּטַּ֞ע

way·yiṭ·ṭa‘

יְהוָ֧ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

גַּן־

gan-

בְעֵ֖דֶן

bə·‘ê·ḏen

– מִקֶּ֑דֶם

miq·qe·ḏem;

in the east –

וַיָּ֣שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

and He put

שָׁ֔ם

šām,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָֽאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. יָצָֽר׃

yā·ṣār.

He had formed .

וַיַּצְמַ֞ח

way·yaṣ·maḥ

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

מִן־

min-

הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh,

of the ground

כָּל־

kāl-

עֵ֛ץ

‘êṣ

נֶחְמָ֥ד

neḥ·māḏ

that is pleasing

､ לְמַרְאֶ֖ה

lə·mar·’eh

to the sight ､

וְט֣וֹב

wə·ṭō·wḇ

and good

– לְמַאֲכָ֑ל

lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl;

וְעֵ֤ץ

wə·‘êṣ

and the tree

הַֽחַיִּים֙

ha·ḥay·yîm

בְּת֣וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

in the midst

､ הַגָּ֔ן

hag·gān,

of the garden ､

וְעֵ֕ץ

wə·‘êṣ

and the tree

הַדַּ֖עַת

had·da·‘aṯ

of the knowledge

ט֥וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

. וָרָֽע׃

wā·rā‘.

and evil .

וְנָהָרּ֙

wə·nā·hār

יֹצֵ֣א

yō·ṣê

מֵעֵ֔דֶן

mê·‘ê·ḏen,

לְהַשְׁק֖וֹת

lə·haš·qō·wṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הַגָּ֑ן

hag·gān;

the garden –

וּמִשָּׁם֙

ū·miš·šām

､ יִפָּרֵ֔ד

yip·pā·rêḏ,

it parted ､

וְהָיָ֖ה

wə·hā·yāh

לְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה

lə·’ar·bā·‘āh

. רָאשִֽׁים׃

rā·šîm.

שֵׁ֥ם

The name

[is] Pishon –

– הַזָּהָֽב׃

gold –

וּֽזֲהַ֛ב

And the gold

הָאָ֥רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

הַהִ֖וא

ha·hi·w

– ט֑וֹב

ṭō·wḇ;

[is] good –

שָׁ֥ם

šām

הַבְּדֹ֖לַח

hab·bə·ḏō·laḥ

. וְאֶ֥בֶן

wə·’e·ḇen

and stone .

הַשֹּֽׁהַם׃

haš·šō·ham.

the onyx

וְשֵֽׁם־

wə·šêm-

And the name

הַנָּהָ֥ר

han·nā·hār

of the river

הַשֵּׁנִ֖י

haš·šê·nî

– גִּיח֑וֹן

gî·ḥō·wn;

[is] Gihon –

ה֣וּא

hū

it

הַסּוֹבֵ֔ב

has·sō·w·ḇêḇ,

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֶ֥רֶץ

’e·reṣ

. כּֽוּשׁ׃

of Cush .

וְשֵׁ֨ם

And the name

הַנָּהָ֤ר

han·nā·hār

הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙

haš·šə·lî·šî

– חִדֶּ֔קֶל

ḥid·de·qel,

[is] Tigris –

ה֥וּא

קִדְמַ֣ת

. אַשּׁ֑וּר

וְהַנָּהָ֥ר

the Euphrates .

The Forbidden Fruit

וַיִּקַּ֛ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

And took

יְהוָ֥ה

､ הָֽאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

the man ､

וַיַּנִּחֵ֣הוּ

way·yan·ni·ḥê·hū

בְגַן־

ḇə·ḡan-

in the garden

עֵ֔דֶן

‘ê·ḏen,

לְעָבְדָ֖הּ

lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏāh

. וּלְשָׁמְרָֽהּ׃

ū·lə·šā·mə·rāh.

and keep it .

וַיְצַו֙

way·ṣaw

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֔ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

עַל־

‘al-

-

､ הָֽאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man ､

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

מִכֹּ֥ל

mik·kōl

עֵֽץ־

‘êṣ-

הַגָּ֖ן

hag·gān

of the garden

אָכֹ֥ל

’ā·ḵōl

– תֹּאכֵֽל׃

tō·ḵêl.

you may eat –

וּמֵעֵ֗ץ

ū·mê·‘êṣ,

but of the tree

הַדַּ֙עַת֙

had·da·‘aṯ

of the knowledge

ט֣וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

､ וָרָ֔ע

wā·rā‘,

and evil ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

תֹאכַ֖ל

ṯō·ḵal

､ מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

mim·men·nū;

from ､

כִּ֗י

kî,

בְּי֛וֹם

bə·yō·wm

in the day

אֲכָלְךָ֥

’ă·ḵā·lə·ḵā

מִמֶּ֖נּוּ

mim·men·nū

of it

מ֥וֹת

. תָּמֽוּת׃

tā·mūṯ.

you shall die .

Adam Names the Animals

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

And said

[it is] good

Adam ､

[each] creature

וַיִּקְרָ֨א

and to the birds

､ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם

of the air ､

וּלְכֹ֖ל

and to every

חַיַּ֣ת

ḥay·yaṯ

– הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה

haś·śā·ḏeh;

of the field –

וּלְאָדָ֕ם

ū·lə·’ā·ḏām

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

מָצָ֥א

mā·ṣā

עֵ֖זֶר

‘ê·zer

. כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃

kə·neḡ·dōw.

The Creation of Woman

וַיַּפֵּל֩

way·yap·pêl

And caused to fall

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֧ים ׀

’ĕ·lō·hîm

תַּרְדֵּמָ֛ה

tar·dê·māh

עַל־

‘al-

– הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

Adam –

､ וַיִּישָׁ֑ן

way·yî·šān;

and he slept ､

וַיִּקַּ֗ח

way·yiq·qaḥ,

and He took

אַחַת֙

’a·ḥaṯ

､ מִצַּלְעֹתָ֔יו

miṣ·ṣal·‘ō·ṯāw,

of his ribs ､

וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר

way·yis·gōr

and closed up

בָּשָׂ֖ר

bā·śār

. תַּחְתֶּֽנָּה׃

taḥ·ten·nāh.

וַיִּבֶן֩

way·yi·ḇen

And made

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֧ים ׀

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶֽת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַצֵּלָ֛ע

haṣ·ṣê·lā‘

the rib ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

לָקַ֥ח

lā·qaḥ

מִן־

min-

､ הָֽאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man ､

– לְאִשָּׁ֑ה

lə·’iš·šāh;

into a woman –

וַיְבִאֶ֖הָ

way·ḇi·’e·hā

and He brought her

אֶל־

’el-

to

. הָֽאָדָֽם׃

hā·’ā·ḏām.

the man .

וַיֹּאמֶר֮

way·yō·mer

And said

､ הָֽאָדָם֒

hā·’ā·ḏām

Adam ､

זֹ֣את

zōṯ

this [is]

הַפַּ֗עַם

hap·pa·‘am,

עֶ֚צֶם

‘e·ṣem

､ מֵֽעֲצָמַ֔י

mê·‘ă·ṣā·may,

of my bones ､

וּבָשָׂ֖ר

ū·ḇā·śār

– מִבְּשָׂרִ֑י

mib·bə·śā·rî;

of my flesh –

לְזֹאת֙

lə·zōṯ

יִקָּרֵ֣א

yiq·qā·rê

shall be called

､ אִשָּׁ֔ה

’iš·šāh,

כִּ֥י

kî

מֵאִ֖ישׁ

mê·’îš

לֻֽקֳחָה־

lu·qo·ḥāh-

. זֹּֽאת׃

zōṯ.

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּן֙

kên

-

יַֽעֲזָב־

ya·‘ă·zāḇ-

אִ֔ישׁ

’îš,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אָבִ֖יו

’ā·ḇîw

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ אִמּ֑וֹ

’im·mōw;

וְדָבַ֣ק

wə·ḏā·ḇaq

and be joined

– בְּאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ

bə·’iš·tōw,

to his wife –

וְהָי֖וּ

wə·hā·yū

and they shall become

לְבָשָׂ֥ר

lə·ḇā·śār

. אֶחָֽד׃

’e·ḥāḏ.

וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ

way·yih·yū

And were

שְׁנֵיהֶם֙

šə·nê·hem

the two of them

､ עֲרוּמִּ֔ים

‘ă·rūm·mîm,

הָֽאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man

､ וְאִשְׁתּ֑וֹ

wə·’iš·tōw;

and his wife ､

וְלֹ֖א

wə·lō

and not

. יִתְבֹּשָֽׁשׁוּ׃

yiṯ·bō·šā·šū.

were they ashamed .
