וְהַנָּחָשׁ֙

Now the serpent

הָיָ֣ה

hā·yāh

עָר֔וּם

‘ā·rūm,

מִכֹּל֙

mik·kōl

חַיַּ֣ת

ḥay·yaṯ

הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה

haś·śā·ḏeh,

of the field

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

עָשָׂ֖ה

‘ā·śāh

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

. אֱלֹהִ֑ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm;

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

And he said

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה

hā·’iš·šāh,

the woman ､

אַ֚ף

’ap̄

-

כִּֽי־

kî-

אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

אֱלֹהִ֔ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

､ לֹ֣א

lō

not ､

תֹֽאכְל֔וּ

ṯō·ḵə·lū,

מִכֹּ֖ל

mik·kōl

עֵ֥ץ

‘êṣ

؟ הַגָּֽן׃

hag·gān.

of the garden ؟

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and said

הָֽאִשָּׁ֖ה

hā·’iš·šāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַנָּחָ֑שׁ

han·nā·ḥāš;

the serpent ､

מִפְּרִ֥י

mip·pə·rî

עֵֽץ־

‘êṣ-

of the trees

הַגָּ֖ן

hag·gān

of the garden

､ נֹאכֵֽל׃

nō·ḵêl.

we may eat ､

וּמִפְּרִ֣י

ū·mip·pə·rî

but of the fruit

הָעֵץ֮

hā·‘êṣ

of the tree

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

which [is]

בְּתוֹךְ־

bə·ṯō·wḵ-

in the middle

､ הַגָּן֒

hag·gān

of the garden ､

אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

: אֱלֹהִ֗ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

לֹ֤א

lō

not

תֹֽאכְלוּ֙

ṯō·ḵə·lū

– מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

mim·men·nū,

it –

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

תִגְּע֖וּ

ṯig·gə·‘ū

shall you touch

､ בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

it ､

פֶּן־

pen-

. תְּמֻתֽוּן׃

tə·mu·ṯūn.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

הַנָּחָ֖שׁ

han·nā·ḥāš

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה

hā·’iš·šāh;

the woman ､

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

מ֖וֹת

mō·wṯ

! תְּמֻתֽוּן׃

tə·mu·ṯūn.

you will die !

כִּ֚י

kî

יֹדֵ֣עַ

yō·ḏê·a‘

אֱלֹהִ֔ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

כִּ֗י

kî,

בְּיוֹם֙

bə·yō·wm

in the day

אֲכָלְכֶ֣ם

’ă·ḵā·lə·ḵem

､ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

mim·men·nū,

of it ､

､ וְנִפְקְח֖וּ

wə·nip̄·qə·ḥū

then will be opened ､

– עֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם

‘ê·nê·ḵem;

וִהְיִיתֶם֙

wih·yî·ṯem

and you will be

､ כֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים

kê·lō·hîm,

יֹדְעֵ֖י

yō·ḏə·‘ê

ט֥וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

. וָרָֽע׃

wā·rā‘.

and evil .

וַתֵּ֣רֶא

wat·tê·re

הָֽאִשָּׁ֡ה

hā·’iš·šāh

כִּ֣י

kî

טוֹב֩

ṭō·wḇ

הָעֵ֨ץ

hā·‘êṣ

the tree

､ לְמַאֲכָ֜ל

lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl

וְכִ֧י

wə·ḵî

and that

תַֽאֲוָה־

ṯa·’ă·wāh-

ה֣וּא

hū

it [was]

､ לָעֵינַ֗יִם

lā·‘ê·na·yim,

to the eyes ､

וְנֶחְמָ֤ד

wə·neḥ·māḏ

הָעֵץ֙

hā·‘êṣ

､ לְהַשְׂכִּ֔יל

lə·haś·kîl,

to make [one] wise ､

וַתִּקַּ֥ח

wat·tiq·qaḥ

מִפִּרְי֖וֹ

mip·pir·yōw

､ וַתֹּאכַ֑ל

wat·tō·ḵal;

and ate ､

וַתִּתֵּ֧ן

wat·tit·tên

גַּם־

gam-

לְאִישָׁ֛הּ

lə·’î·šāh

עִמָּ֖הּ

‘im·māh

with her

. וַיֹּאכַֽל׃

way·yō·ḵal.

and he ate .

וַתִּפָּקַ֙חְנָה֙

wat·tip·pā·qaḥ·nāh

And were opened

עֵינֵ֣י

‘ê·nê

the eyes

､ שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם

šə·nê·hem,

of the two of them ､

וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ

way·yê·ḏə·‘ū,

כִּ֥י

kî

עֵֽירֻמִּ֖ם

‘ê·rum·mim

– הֵ֑ם

hêm;

they –

וַֽיִּתְפְּרוּ֙

way·yiṯ·pə·rū

and they sewed together

עֲלֵ֣ה

‘ă·lêh

､ תְאֵנָ֔ה

ṯə·’ê·nāh,

fig ､

וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ

way·ya·‘ă·śū

and made

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

. חֲגֹרֹֽת׃

ḥă·ḡō·rōṯ.

God Arraigns Adam and Eve

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ

way·yiš·mə·‘ū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

ק֨וֹל

qō·wl

יְהוָ֧ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

מִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ

miṯ·hal·lêḵ

בַּגָּ֖ן

bag·gān

in the garden

לְר֣וּחַ

lə·rū·aḥ

in the breeze

– הַיּ֑וֹם

hay·yō·wm;

of the day –

וַיִּתְחַבֵּ֨א

way·yiṯ·ḥab·bê

and hid themselves

הָֽאָדָ֜ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

וְאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ

wə·’iš·tōw,

מִפְּנֵי֙

mip·pə·nê

from the presence

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהִ֔ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

God ､

בְּת֖וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

עֵ֥ץ

‘êṣ

. הַגָּֽן׃

hag·gān.

of the garden .

וַיִּקְרָ֛א

way·yiq·rā

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶל־

’el-

to

הָֽאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

､ ל֖וֹ

lōw

to him ､

؟ אַיֶּֽכָּה׃

’ay·yek·kāh.

where [are] you ؟

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

so he said ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

קֹלְךָ֥

qō·lə·ḵā

שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי

šā·ma‘·tî

､ בַּגָּ֑ן

bag·gān;

in the garden ､

､ וָאִירָ֛א

wā·’î·rā

and I was afraid ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

עֵירֹ֥ם

‘ê·rōm

– אָנֹ֖כִי

’ā·nō·ḵî

I –

. וָאֵחָבֵֽא׃

wā·’ê·ḥā·ḇê.

and I hid myself .

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said ､

מִ֚י

mî

הִגִּ֣יד

hig·gîḏ

לְךָ֔

lə·ḵā,

כִּ֥י

kî

עֵירֹ֖ם

‘ê·rōm

؟ אָ֑תָּה

’āt·tāh;

הֲמִן־

hă·min-

הָעֵ֗ץ

hā·‘êṣ,

the tree

אֲשֶׁ֧ר

’ă·šer

צִוִּיתִ֛יךָ

ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā

I commanded you

､ לְבִלְתִּ֥י

lə·ḇil·tî

not ､

אֲכָל־

’ă·ḵāl-

מִמֶּ֖נּוּ

mim·men·nū

؟ אָכָֽלְתָּ׃

’ā·ḵā·lə·tā.

have you eaten ؟

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

､ הָֽאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

the man ､

הָֽאִשָּׁה֙

hā·’iš·šāh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

נָתַ֣תָּה

nā·ṯat·tāh

､ עִמָּדִ֔י

‘im·mā·ḏî,

[to be] with me ､

הִ֛וא

hî

נָֽתְנָה־

nā·ṯə·nāh-

לִּ֥י

lî

me

מִן־

min-

of

､ הָעֵ֖ץ

hā·‘êṣ

the tree ､

. וָאֹכֵֽל׃

wā·’ō·ḵêl.

and I ate .

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יְהוָ֧ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

､ לָאִשָּׁ֖ה

lā·’iš·šāh

to the woman ､

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

זֹּ֣את

zōṯ

؟ עָשִׂ֑ית

‘ā·śîṯ;

you have done ؟

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

wat·tō·mer

and said

､ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה

hā·’iš·šāh,

the woman ､

הַנָּחָ֥שׁ

han·nā·ḥāš

､ הִשִּׁיאַ֖נִי

hiš·šî·’a·nî

deceived me ､

. וָאֹכֵֽל׃

wā·’ō·ḵêl.

and I ate .

וַיֹּאמֶר֩

way·yō·mer

יְהֹוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֥ים ׀

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶֽל־

’el-

to

､ הַנָּחָשׁ֮

han·nā·ḥāš

the serpent ､

כִּ֣י

kî

עָשִׂ֣יתָ

‘ā·śî·ṯā

､ זֹּאת֒

zōṯ

this ､

אָר֤וּר

’ā·rūr

אַתָּה֙

’at·tāh

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

､ הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה

hab·bə·hê·māh,

וּמִכֹּ֖ל

ū·mik·kōl

and more than every

חַיַּ֣ת

ḥay·yaṯ

– הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה

haś·śā·ḏeh;

of the field –

עַל־

‘al-

On

גְּחֹנְךָ֣

gə·ḥō·nə·ḵā

､ תֵלֵ֔ךְ

ṯê·lêḵ,

you shall go ､

וְעָפָ֥ר

wə·‘ā·p̄ār

and dust

､ תֹּאכַ֖ל

tō·ḵal

you shall eat ､

כָּל־

kāl-

יְמֵ֥י

yə·mê

the days

. חַיֶּֽיךָ׃

ḥay·ye·ḵā.

וְאֵיבָ֣ה ׀

wə·’ê·ḇāh

אָשִׁ֗ית

’ā·šîṯ,

I will put

בֵּֽינְךָ֙

bê·nə·ḵā

וּבֵ֣ין

ū·ḇên

and

､ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה

hā·’iš·šāh,

the woman ､

וּבֵ֥ין

ū·ḇên

זַרְעֲךָ֖

zar·‘ă·ḵā

וּבֵ֣ין

ū·ḇên

and

– זַרְעָ֑הּ

zar·‘āh;

ה֚וּא

hū

He

יְשׁוּפְךָ֣

yə·šū·p̄ə·ḵā

､ רֹ֔אשׁ

rōš,

וְאַתָּ֖ה

wə·’at·tāh

and you

תְּשׁוּפֶ֥נּוּ

tə·šū·p̄en·nū

shall bruise His

. עָקֵֽב׃

‘ā·qêḇ.

The Punishment of Mankind

אֶֽל־

’el-

To

הָאִשָּׁ֣ה

hā·’iš·šāh

､ אָמַ֗ר

’ā·mar,

He said ､

הַרְבָּ֤ה

har·bāh

אַרְבֶּה֙

’ar·beh

I will multiply

עִצְּבוֹנֵ֣ךְ

‘iṣ·ṣə·ḇō·w·nêḵ

– וְהֵֽרֹנֵ֔ךְ

wə·hê·rō·nêḵ,

and your conception –

בְּעֶ֖צֶב

bə·‘e·ṣeḇ

תֵּֽלְדִ֣י

tê·lə·ḏî

you shall bring forth

– בָנִ֑ים

ḇā·nîm;

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

אִישֵׁךְ֙

’î·šêḵ

､ תְּשׁ֣וּקָתֵ֔ךְ

tə·šū·qā·ṯêḵ,

Your desire [shall be] ､

וְה֖וּא

wə·hū

and he

יִמְשָׁל־

yim·šāl-

. בָּֽךְ׃

bāḵ.

וּלְאָדָ֣ם

ū·lə·’ā·ḏām

And to Adam

､ אָמַ֗ר

’ā·mar,

He said ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

שָׁמַעְתָּ֮

šā·ma‘·tā

you have heeded

לְק֣וֹל

lə·qō·wl

､ אִשְׁתֶּךָ֒

’iš·te·ḵā

of your wife ､

וַתֹּ֙אכַל֙

wat·tō·ḵal

מִן־

min-

הָעֵ֔ץ

hā·‘êṣ,

the tree

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

､ צִוִּיתִ֙יךָ֙

ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā

I commanded you ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

לֹ֥א

lō

not

תֹאכַ֖ל

ṯō·ḵal

: מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

mim·men·nū;

of it :

אֲרוּרָ֤ה

’ă·rū·rāh

הָֽאֲדָמָה֙

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh

– בַּֽעֲבוּרֶ֔ךָ

ba·‘ă·ḇū·re·ḵā,

for your sake –

בְּעִצָּבוֹן֙

bə·‘iṣ·ṣā·ḇō·wn

תֹּֽאכֲלֶ֔נָּה

tō·ḵă·len·nāh,

you shall eat [of] it

כֹּ֖ל

kōl

יְמֵ֥י

yə·mê

the days

– חַיֶּֽיךָ׃

ḥay·ye·ḵā.

of your life –

וְק֥וֹץ

wə·qō·wṣ

and both thorns

וְדַרְדַּ֖ר

wə·ḏar·dar

､ תַּצְמִ֣יחַֽ

taṣ·mî·aḥ

it shall bring forth ､

לָ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

וְאָכַלְתָּ֖

wə·’ā·ḵal·tā

and you shall eat

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עֵ֥שֶׂב

‘ê·śeḇ

the herb

– הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

haś·śā·ḏeh.

of the field –

בְּזֵעַ֤ת

bə·zê·‘aṯ

by the sweat

אַפֶּ֙יךָ֙

’ap·pe·ḵā

תֹּ֣אכַל

tō·ḵal

､ לֶ֔חֶם

le·ḥem,

עַ֤ד

‘aḏ

שֽׁוּבְךָ֙

šū·ḇə·ḵā

אֶל־

’el-

to

– הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh,

the ground –

כִּ֥י

kî

מִמֶּ֖נָּה

mim·men·nāh

out of it

– לֻקָּ֑חְתָּ

luq·qā·ḥə·tā;

you were taken –

כִּֽי־

kî-

עָפָ֣ר

‘ā·p̄ār

､ אַ֔תָּה

’at·tāh,

you [are] ､

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and to

עָפָ֖ר

‘ā·p̄ār

. תָּשֽׁוּב׃

tā·šūḇ.

you shall return .

וַיִּקְרָ֧א

way·yiq·rā

הָֽאָדָ֛ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

שֵׁ֥ם

the name

אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ

– חַוָּ֑ה

ḥaw·wāh;

Eve –

כִּ֛י

The Expulsion from Paradise

וַיַּעַשׂ֩

way·ya·‘aś

And made

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֜ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

לְאָדָ֧ם

lə·’ā·ḏām

וּלְאִשְׁתּ֛וֹ

ū·lə·’iš·tōw

כָּתְנ֥וֹת

kā·ṯə·nō·wṯ

､ ע֖וֹר

‘ō·wr

of skin ､

. וַיַּלְבִּשֵֽׁם׃

way·yal·bi·šêm.

and clothed them .

､ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀

way·yō·mer

And said ､

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהִ֗ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

God ､

､ הֵ֤ן

hên

הָֽאָדָם֙

hā·’ā·ḏām

the man

הָיָה֙

hā·yāh

כְּאַחַ֣ד

kə·’a·ḥaḏ

､ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

mim·men·nū,

of Us ､

לָדַ֖עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

ט֣וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

– וָרָ֑ע

wā·rā‘;

and evil –

､ וְעַתָּ֣ה ׀

wə·‘at·tāh

now ､

פֶּן־

pen-

יִשְׁלַ֣ח

yiš·laḥ

､ יָד֗וֹ

yā·ḏōw,

וְלָקַח֙

wə·lā·qaḥ

and take

גַּ֚ם

gam

מֵעֵ֣ץ

mê·‘êṣ

of the tree

､ הַֽחַיִּ֔ים

ha·ḥay·yîm,

of life ､

､ וְאָכַ֖ל

wə·’ā·ḵal

and eat ､

וָחַ֥י

wā·ḥay

and live

לְעֹלָֽם׃

lə·‘ō·lām.

וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֛הוּ

way·šal·lə·ḥê·hū

therefore sent him

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

מִגַּן־

mig·gan-

out of the garden

､ עֵ֑דֶן

‘ê·ḏen;

of Eden ､

לַֽעֲבֹד֙

la·‘ă·ḇōḏ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לֻקַּ֖ח

luq·qaḥ

he had been taken

. מִשָּֽׁם׃

miš·šām.

- .

וַיְגָ֖רֶשׁ

way·ḡā·reš

so He drove out

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הָֽאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

the man –

וַיַּשְׁכֵּן֩

way·yaš·kên

and He placed

מִקֶּ֨דֶם

miq·qe·ḏem

to the east

לְגַן־

lə·ḡan-

of the garden

עֵ֜דֶן

‘ê·ḏen

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַכְּרֻבִ֗ים

hak·kə·ru·ḇîm,

וְאֵ֨ת

wə·’êṯ

and

לַ֤הַט

la·haṭ

הַחֶ֙רֶב֙

ha·ḥe·reḇ

､ הַמִּתְהַפֶּ֔כֶת

ham·miṯ·hap·pe·ḵeṯ,

לִשְׁמֹ֕ר

liš·mōr

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דֶּ֖רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

עֵ֥ץ

‘êṣ

to the tree

. הַֽחַיִּֽים׃

ha·ḥay·yîm.

of life .
