וַיְהִ֕י

And it came to pass

מִקֵּ֖ץ

miq·qêṣ

at the end

שְׁנָתַ֣יִם

šə·nā·ṯa·yim

of two

､ יָמִ֑ים

yā·mîm;

וּפַרְעֹ֣ה

ū·p̄ar·‘ōh

– חֹלֵ֔ם

ḥō·lêm,

had a dream –

､ וְהִנֵּ֖ה

wə·hin·nêh

and behold ､

עֹמֵ֥ד

‘ō·mêḏ

עַל־

‘al-

by

. הַיְאֹֽר׃

hay·’ōr.

the Nile .

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

And suddenly ､

מִן־

min-

הַיְאֹ֗ר

hay·’ōr,

of the Nile

עֹלֹת֙

‘ō·lōṯ

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

פָּר֔וֹת

pā·rō·wṯ,

יְפ֥וֹת

yə·p̄ō·wṯ

מַרְאֶ֖ה

mar·’eh

וּבְרִיאֹ֣ת

ū·ḇə·rî·’ōṯ

and fat

– בָּשָׂ֑ר

bā·śār;

of flesh –

וַתִּרְעֶ֖ינָה

wat·tir·‘e·nāh

. בָּאָֽחוּ׃

bā·’ā·ḥū.

among the reeds .

､ וְהִנֵּ֞ה

wə·hin·nêh

And behold ､

שֶׁ֧בַע

še·ḇa‘

פָּר֣וֹת

pā·rō·wṯ

אֲחֵר֗וֹת

’ă·ḥê·rō·wṯ,

עֹל֤וֹת

‘ō·lō·wṯ

אַחֲרֵיהֶן֙

’a·ḥă·rê·hen

מִן־

min-

､ הַיְאֹ֔ר

hay·’ōr,

of the Nile ､

רָע֥וֹת

rā·‘ō·wṯ

מַרְאֶ֖ה

mar·’eh

וְדַקּ֣וֹת

wə·ḏaq·qō·wṯ

and thin

– בָּשָׂ֑ר

bā·śār;

of flesh –

וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֛דְנָה

wat·ta·‘ă·mō·ḏə·nāh

אֵ֥צֶל

’ê·ṣel

by

הַפָּר֖וֹת

hap·pā·rō·wṯ

the [other] cows

עַל־

‘al-

on

שְׂפַ֥ת

śə·p̄aṯ

the bank

. הַיְאֹֽר׃

hay·’ōr.

of the Nile .

וַתֹּאכַ֣לְנָה

wat·tō·ḵal·nāh

And ate up

הַפָּר֗וֹת

hap·pā·rō·wṯ,

the cows

רָע֤וֹת

rā·‘ō·wṯ

הַמַּרְאֶה֙

ham·mar·’eh

וְדַקֹּ֣ת

wə·ḏaq·qōṯ

and thin

הַבָּשָׂ֔ר

hab·bā·śār,

､ אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

- ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

הַפָּר֔וֹת

hap·pā·rō·wṯ,

the cows

יְפֹ֥ת

yə·p̄ōṯ

הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה

ham·mar·’eh

. וְהַבְּרִיאֹ֑ת

wə·hab·bə·rî·’ōṯ;

and fat .

וַיִּיקַ֖ץ

way·yî·qaṣ

. פַּרְעֹֽה׃

par·‘ōh.

וַיִּישָׁ֕ן

way·yî·šān

And He slept

וַֽיַּחֲלֹ֖ם

way·ya·ḥă·lōm

– שֵׁנִ֑ית

šê·nîṯ;

a second [time] –

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀

wə·hin·nêh

and suddenly ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים

šib·bo·lîm,

עֹל֛וֹת

‘ō·lō·wṯ

בְּקָנֶ֥ה

bə·qā·neh

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

בְּרִיא֥וֹת

bə·rî·’ō·wṯ

. וְטֹבֽוֹת׃

wə·ṭō·ḇō·wṯ.

and good .

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

wə·hin·nêh

And behold ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים

šib·bo·lîm,

דַּקּ֖וֹת

daq·qō·wṯ

וּשְׁדוּפֹ֣ת

ū·šə·ḏū·p̄ōṯ

and blighted by

קָדִ֑ים

qā·ḏîm;

צֹמְח֖וֹת

ṣō·mə·ḥō·wṯ

. אַחֲרֵיהֶֽן׃

’a·ḥă·rê·hen.

וַתִּבְלַ֙עְנָה֙

wat·tiḇ·la‘·nāh

הַשִּׁבֳּלִ֣ים

haš·šib·bo·lîm

הַדַּקּ֔וֹת

had·daq·qō·wṯ,

the thin

､ אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

- ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִ֔ים

haš·šib·bo·lîm,

הַבְּרִיא֖וֹת

hab·bə·rî·’ō·wṯ

the fat

. וְהַמְּלֵא֑וֹת

wə·ham·mə·lê·’ō·wṯ;

and full .

וַיִּיקַ֥ץ

way·yî·qaṣ

､ פַּרְעֹ֖ה

par·‘ōh

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

. חֲלֽוֹם׃

ḥă·lō·wm.

[it was] a dream .

וַיְהִ֤י

way·hî

And it came to pass

בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙

ḇab·bō·qer

in the morning

וַתִּפָּ֣עֶם

wat·tip·pā·‘em

that was troubled

– רוּח֔וֹ

rū·ḥōw,

וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח

way·yiš·laḥ,

and he sent

וַיִּקְרָ֛א

way·yiq·rā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י

ḥar·ṭum·mê

､ מִצְרַ֖יִם

miṣ·ra·yim

of Egypt ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

כָּל־

kāl-

､ חֲכָמֶ֑יהָ

ḥă·ḵā·me·hā;

its wise men ､

וַיְסַפֵּ֨ר

way·sap·pêr

and told

פַּרְעֹ֤ה

par·‘ōh

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– חֲלֹמ֔וֹ

ḥă·lō·mōw,

וְאֵין־

wə·’ên-

but [there was] no one

פּוֹתֵ֥ר

pō·w·ṯêr

who could interpret

אוֹתָ֖ם

’ō·w·ṯām

. לְפַרְעֹֽה׃

וַיְדַבֵּר֙

way·ḏab·bêr

הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

– הַיּֽוֹם׃

עַל־

‘al-

with

､ עֲבָדָ֑יו

‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw;

his servants ､

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן

way·yit·tên

and put

אֹתִ֜י

me

בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר

bə·miš·mar,

בֵּ֚ית

bêṯ

שַׂ֣ר

śar

of the captain

､ הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים

haṭ·ṭab·bā·ḥîm,

of the guard ､

אֹתִ֕י

’ō·ṯî

[both] me

וְאֵ֖ת

wə·’êṯ

and

שַׂ֥ר

śar

. הָאֹפִֽים׃

hā·’ō·p̄îm.

the baker .

וַנַּֽחַלְמָ֥ה

wan·na·ḥal·māh

And we each had

חֲל֛וֹם

ḥă·lō·wm

בְּלַ֥יְלָה

bə·lay·lāh

､ אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

one ､

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

I

– וָה֑וּא

wā·hū;

and he –

אִ֛ישׁ

’îš

each of us

כְּפִתְר֥וֹן

kə·p̄iṯ·rō·wn

according to the interpretation

חֲלֹמ֖וֹ

ḥă·lō·mōw

of his [own] dream

. חָלָֽמְנוּ׃

ḥā·lā·mə·nū.

וְשָׁ֨ם

wə·šām

אִתָּ֜נוּ

’it·tā·nū

[there was] with us

､ נַ֣עַר

na·‘ar

a young man ､

עִבְרִ֗י

‘iḇ·rî,

עֶ֚בֶד

‘e·ḇeḏ

לְשַׂ֣ר

lə·śar

of the captain

– הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים

haṭ·ṭab·bā·ḥîm,

of the guard –

וַנְּ֨סַפֶּר־

wan·nə·sap·per-

and we told

､ ל֔וֹ‪‬

lōw,

him ､

וַיִּפְתָּר־

way·yip̄·tār-

and he interpreted

he interpreted .

､ וַיְהִ֛י

And it came to pass ､

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר

､ לָ֖נוּ

to us ､

כֵּ֣ן

so

– הָיָ֑ה

hā·yāh;

it came to pass –

אֹתִ֛י

הֵשִׁ֥יב

עַל־

‘al-

to

､ כַּנִּ֖י

kan·nî

my office ､

וְאֹת֥וֹ

wə·’ō·ṯōw

and him

. תָלָֽה׃

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh's Dreams

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח

And sent

פַּרְעֹה֙

par·‘ōh

וַיִּקְרָ֣א

way·yiq·rā

אֶת־

､ יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

וַיְרִיצֻ֖הוּ

way·rî·ṣu·hū

and they brought him quickly

מִן־

min-

– הַבּ֑וֹר

hab·bō·wr;

of the dungeon –

וַיְגַלַּח֙

way·ḡal·laḥ

and he shaved

וַיְחַלֵּ֣ף

way·ḥal·lêp̄

､ שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו

śim·lō·ṯāw,

his clothing ､

וַיָּבֹ֖א

way·yā·ḇō

and came

אֶל־

’el-

to

. פַּרְעֹֽה׃

par·‘ōh.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

פַּרְעֹה֙

par·‘ōh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

חֲל֣וֹם

ḥă·lō·wm

､ חָלַ֔מְתִּי

ḥā·lam·tî,

I have dreamed ､

וּפֹתֵ֖ר

ū·p̄ō·ṯêr

and to interpret

אֵ֣ין

’ên

[there is] no one

. אֹת֑וֹ

’ō·ṯōw;

it .

וַאֲנִ֗י

wa·’ă·nî,

But I

שָׁמַ֤עְתִּי

šā·ma‘·tî

עָלֶ֙יךָ֙

‘ā·le·ḵā

of you

לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

תִּשְׁמַ֥ע

tiš·ma‘

[that] you can understand

חֲל֖וֹם

ḥă·lō·wm

לִפְתֹּ֥ר

lip̄·tōr

. אֹתֽוֹ׃

’ō·ṯōw.

it .

וַיַּ֨עַן

way·ya·‘an

יוֹסֵ֧ף

､ לֵאמֹ֖ר

– בִּלְעָדָ֑י

bil·‘ā·ḏāy;

[it is] not in me –

אֱלֹהִ֕ים

will give an answer

. בַּתְּחִלָּ֑ה

And I saw

､ בַּחֲלֹמִ֑י

in my dream ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀

and suddenly ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים

šib·bo·lîm,

עֹלֹ֛ת

‘ō·lōṯ

בְּקָנֶ֥ה

bə·qā·neh

､ אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

one ､

מְלֵאֹ֥ת

mə·lê·’ōṯ

､ וְטֹבֽוֹת׃

wə·ṭō·ḇō·wṯ.

and good ､

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

wə·hin·nêh

and behold ､

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

､ שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים

šib·bo·lîm,

､ צְנֻמ֥וֹת

ṣə·nu·mō·wṯ

､ דַּקּ֖וֹת

daq·qō·wṯ

thin ､

שְׁדֻפ֣וֹת

šə·ḏu·p̄ō·wṯ

[and] blighted by

､ קָדִ֑ים

qā·ḏîm;

the east wind ､

צֹמְח֖וֹת

ṣō·mə·ḥō·wṯ

. אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃

’a·ḥă·rê·hem.

וַתִּבְלַ֙עְןָ֙

wat·tiḇ·la‘·nā

הָשִׁבֳּלִ֣ים‪‬

hā·šib·bo·lîm

הַדַּקֹּ֔ת

had·daq·qōṯ,

the thin

אֵ֛ת

’êṯ

-

שֶׁ֥בַע

הַֽשִׁבֳּלִ֖ים

. הַטֹּב֑וֹת

So I told [this]

､ אֶל־

’el-

to ､

– הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֔ים

ha·ḥar·ṭum·mîm,

the magicians –

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

but [there was] no one

מַגִּ֖יד

mag·gîḏ

who could explain [it]

. לִֽי׃

lî.

to me .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יוֹסֵף֙

yō·w·sêp̄

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ פַּרְעֹ֔ה

par·‘ōh,

חֲל֥וֹם

פַּרְעֹ֖ה

– אֶחָ֣ד

God [is]

the good

הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִים֙

הַטֹּבֹ֔ת

haṭ·ṭō·ḇōṯ,

שֶׁ֥בַע

שָׁנִ֖ים

. הֵ֑נָּה

hên·nāh;

חֲל֖וֹם

. הֽוּא׃

הָעֹלֹ֣ת

אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ן

שֶׁ֤בַע

שָׁנִים֙

– הֵ֔נָּה

hên·nāh,

are –

וְשֶׁ֤בַע

wə·še·ḇa‘

הַֽשִׁבֳּלִים֙

ha·šib·bo·lîm

､ הָרֵק֔וֹת

hā·rê·qō·wṯ,

שְׁדֻפ֖וֹת

šə·ḏu·p̄ō·wṯ

､ הַקָּדִ֑ים

haq·qā·ḏîm;

the east wind ､

יִהְי֕וּ

yih·yū

שֶׁ֖בַע

še·ḇa‘

שְׁנֵ֥י

šə·nê

. רָעָֽב׃

rā·‘āḇ.

ה֣וּא

hū

That [is]

הַדָּבָ֔ר

had·dā·ḇār,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי

dib·bar·tî

אֶל־

’el-

to

– פַּרְעֹ֑ה

par·‘ōh;

אֲשֶׁ֧ר

הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים

God [is]

about to do ､

הֶרְאָ֥ה

will come

שָׂבָ֥ע

גָּד֖וֹל

בְּכָל־

אֶ֥רֶץ

’e·reṣ

the land

– מִצְרָֽיִם׃

miṣ·rā·yim.

of Egypt –

וְ֠קָמוּ

wə·qā·mū

but will arise

שֶׁ֜בַע

še·ḇa‘

שְׁנֵ֤י

šə·nê

רָעָב֙

rā·‘āḇ

､ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן

’a·ḥă·rê·hen,

וְנִשְׁכַּ֥ח

wə·niš·kaḥ

and will be forgotten

כָּל־

kāl-

הַשָּׂבָ֖ע

haś·śā·ḇā‘

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in the land

– מִצְרָ֑יִם

miṣ·rā·yim;

of Egypt –

וְכִלָּ֥ה

wə·ḵil·lāh

and will deplete

הָרָעָ֖ב

hā·rā·‘āḇ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

the land .

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

So not

יִוָּדַ֤ע

yiw·wā·ḏa‘

will be known

הַשָּׂבָע֙

haś·śā·ḇā‘

､ בָּאָ֔רֶץ

bā·’ā·reṣ,

the land

וְיַפְקֵ֥ד

and let him appoint

וְחִמֵּשׁ֙

to take a fifth
