And when were past

in the hearing

､ פַרְעֹ֖ה

of Pharaoh ､

､ הִשְׁבִּיעַ֣נִי

hiš·bî·‘a·nî

made me swear ､

､ לֵאמֹ֗ר

lê·mōr,

､ הִנֵּ֣ה

hin·nêh

אָנֹכִי֮

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

– מֵת֒

mêṯ

am dying –

בְּקִבְרִ֗י

bə·qiḇ·rî,

in my grave

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

כָּרִ֤יתִי

kā·rî·ṯî

לִי֙

lî

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in the land

､ כְּנַ֔עַן

kə·na·‘an,

of Canaan ､

שָׁ֖מָּה

šām·māh

. תִּקְבְּרֵ֑נִי

tiq·bə·rê·nî;

you shall bury me .

וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

､ אֶֽעֱלֶה־

’e·‘ĕ·leh-

let me go up ､

､ נָּ֛א

nā

וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה

wə·’eq·bə·rāh

and bury

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אָבִ֖י

’ā·ḇî

my father ､

. וְאָשֽׁוּבָה׃

wə·’ā·šū·ḇāh.

and I will return .

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

､ פַּרְעֹ֑ה

par·‘ōh;

עֲלֵ֛ה

‘ă·lêh

go up

וּקְבֹ֥ר

ū·qə·ḇōr

and bury

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אָבִ֖יךָ

’ā·ḇî·ḵā

your father ､

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

. הִשְׁבִּיעֶֽךָ׃

hiš·bî·‘e·ḵā.

he made you swear .

וַיַּ֥עַל

way·ya·‘al

So went up

יוֹסֵ֖ף

לִקְבֹּ֣ר

liq·bōr

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ אָבִ֑יו

’ā·ḇîw;

וַיַּֽעֲל֨וּ

way·ya·‘ă·lū

and went up

אִתּ֜וֹ

’it·tōw

with him

כָּל־

kāl-

עַבְדֵ֤י

‘aḇ·ḏê

､ פַרְעֹה֙

p̄ar·‘ōh

of Pharaoh ､

זִקְנֵ֣י

ziq·nê

､ בֵית֔וֹ

ḇê·ṯōw,

of his house ､

וְכֹ֖ל

wə·ḵōl

and all

זִקְנֵ֥י

אֶֽרֶץ־

’e·reṣ-

of the land

､ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

miṣ·rā·yim.

of Egypt ､

וְכֹל֙

wə·ḵōl

and as well as all

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

､ יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

of Joseph ､

､ וְאֶחָ֖יו

wə·’e·ḥāw

and his brothers ､

וּבֵ֣ית

ū·ḇêṯ

. אָבִ֑יו

’ā·ḇîw;

of his father .

רַ֗ק

raq,

､ טַפָּם֙

their little ones ､

､ וְצֹאנָ֣ם

wə·ṣō·nām

and their flocks ､

､ וּבְקָרָ֔ם

and their herds ､

עָזְב֖וּ

‘ā·zə·ḇū

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in the land

. גֹּֽשֶׁן׃

gō·šen.

וַיַּ֣עַל

way·ya·‘al

And there went up

עִמּ֔וֹ

‘im·mōw,

with him

גַּם־

gam-

רֶ֖כֶב

re·ḵeḇ

גַּם־

and

– פָּרָשִׁ֑ים

pā·rā·šîm;

וַיְהִ֥י

way·hî

and it was

הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה

כָּבֵ֥ד

. מְאֹֽד׃

וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ

עַד־

the threshing floor

､ הָאָטָ֗ד

of Atad ､

אֲשֶׁר֙

which [is]

בְּעֵ֣בֶר

､ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן

hay·yar·dên,

the Jordan ､

וַיִּ֨סְפְּדוּ־

way·yis·pə·ḏū-

and they mourned

שָׁ֔ם

šām,

מִסְפֵּ֛ד

mis·pêḏ

with a lamentation

גָּד֥וֹל

gā·ḏō·wl

וְכָבֵ֖ד

wə·ḵā·ḇêḏ

､ מְאֹ֑ד

mə·’ōḏ;

very ､

וַיַּ֧עַשׂ

and He observed

לְאָבִ֛יו

אֵ֖בֶל

שִׁבְעַ֥ת

. יָמִֽים׃

yā·mîm.

וַיַּ֡רְא

יוֹשֵׁב֩

the inhabitants

､ הָאָ֨רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

of the land ､

､ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜י

hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî

the Canaanite ､

הָאֵ֗בֶל

hā·’ê·ḇel,

בְּגֹ֙רֶן֙

at the threshing floor

､ הָֽאָטָ֔ד

then they said ､

Abel Mizraim ､

the Jordan .

וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ

he had commanded them .

to the land

לַאֲחֻזַּת־

for a possession

Joseph Comforts his Brothers

וַיִּרְא֤וּ

､ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם

’ă·ḇî·hem,

their father ､

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

then they said ､

יִשְׂטְמֵ֖נוּ

will hate us

､ יוֹסֵ֑ף

וְהָשֵׁ֤ב

יָשִׁיב֙

לָ֔נוּ

lā·nū,

us

אֵ֚ת

כָּל־

הָ֣רָעָ֔ה

the evil

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

גָּמַ֖לְנוּ

we did

. אֹתֽוֹ׃

to him .

וַיְצַוּ֕וּ

אֶל־

’el-

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

he died ､

to Joseph ､

of your brothers ､

– וְחַטָּאתָם֙

and their sin –

the evil

. גְמָל֔וּךָ

ḡə·mā·lū·ḵā,

they did to you .

､ וְעַתָּה֙

wə·‘at·tāh

Now ､

､ שָׂ֣א

śā

､ נָ֔א

nā,

לְפֶ֥שַׁע

lə·p̄e·ša‘

עַבְדֵ֖י

‘aḇ·ḏê

of the servants

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

of the God

. אָבִ֑יךָ

’ā·ḇî·ḵā;

of your father .

וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ

way·yê·ḇək

And wept

יוֹסֵ֖ף

yō·w·sêp̄

בְּדַבְּרָ֥ם

bə·ḏab·bə·rām

when they spoke

. אֵלָֽיו׃

’ê·lāw.

to him .

וַיֵּלְכוּ֙

way·yê·lə·ḵū

And went

גַּם־

gam-

אֶחָ֔יו

’e·ḥāw,

וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ

way·yip·pə·lū

– לְפָנָ֑יו

lə·p̄ā·nāw;

before his face –

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

and they said ､

､ הִנֶּ֥נּֽוּ

hin·nen·nū

לְךָ֖

lə·ḵā

. לַעֲבָדִֽים׃

la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

אֲלֵהֶ֛ם

’ă·lê·hem

､ יוֹסֵ֖ף

yō·w·sêp̄

אַל־

’al-

not

､ תִּירָ֑אוּ

tî·rā·’ū;

do be afraid ､

כִּ֛י

kî

הֲתַ֥חַת

hă·ṯa·ḥaṯ

in the place

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

؟ אָֽנִי׃

’ā·nî.

[am] I ؟

､ וְאַתֶּ֕ם

wə·’at·tem

but as for you ､

חֲשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם

ḥă·šaḇ·tem

עָלַ֖י

‘ā·lay

– רָעָ֑ה

rā·‘āh;

evil –

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

[but] God

חֲשָׁבָ֣הּ

ḥă·šā·ḇāh

､ לְטֹבָ֔ה

lə·ṭō·ḇāh,

לְמַ֗עַן

lə·ma·‘an,

עֲשֹׂ֛ה

‘ă·śōh

to bring it about

כַּיּ֥וֹם

kay·yō·wm

､ הַזֶּ֖ה

haz·zeh

לְהַחֲיֹ֥ת

lə·ha·ḥă·yōṯ

עַם־

‘am-

. רָֽב׃

rāḇ.

וְעַתָּה֙

wə·‘at·tāh

אַל־

’al-

not

– תִּירָ֔אוּ

tî·rā·’ū,

do be afraid –

אָנֹכִ֛י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

אֲכַלְכֵּ֥ל

’ă·ḵal·kêl

will provide for

אֶתְכֶ֖ם

’eṯ·ḵem

וְאֶֽת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

. טַפְּכֶ֑ם

ṭap·pə·ḵem;

your little ones .

וַיְנַחֵ֣ם

way·na·ḥêm

And he comforted

אוֹתָ֔ם

’ō·w·ṯām,

וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר

way·ḏab·bêr

and spoke kindly

עַל־

‘al-

to

. לִבָּֽם׃

lib·bām.

The Death of Joseph

וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב

way·yê·šeḇ

יוֹסֵף֙

､ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם

bə·miṣ·ra·yim,

in Egypt ､

ה֖וּא

he

וּבֵ֣ית

ū·ḇêṯ

and the house

. אָבִ֑יו

’ā·ḇîw;

of his father .

וַיְחִ֣י

way·ḥî

יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

מֵאָ֥ה

mê·’āh

וָעֶ֖שֶׂר

wā·‘e·śer

and ten

. שָׁנִֽים׃

šā·nîm.

וַיַּ֤רְא

way·yar

And saw

יוֹסֵף֙

yō·w·sêp̄

לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם

lə·’ep̄·ra·yim,

בְּנֵ֖י

bə·nê

. שִׁלֵּשִׁ֑ים

šil·lê·šîm;

the third [generation] .

גַּ֗ם

gam,

בְּנֵ֤י

bə·nê

the sons

מָכִיר֙

mā·ḵîr

בֶּן־

ben-

מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה

mə·naš·šeh,

יֻלְּד֖וּ

yul·lə·ḏū

were brought up

עַל־

‘al-

on

בִּרְכֵּ֥י

bir·kê

. יוֹסֵֽף׃

yō·w·sêp̄.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יוֹסֵף֙

yō·w·sêp̄

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ אֶחָ֔יו

’e·ḥāw,

his brothers ､

אָנֹכִ֖י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

. מֵ֑ת

mêṯ;

am dying .

וֵֽאלֹהִ֞ים

wê·lō·hîm

But God

פָּקֹ֧ד

pā·qōḏ

יִפְקֹ֣ד

yip̄·qōḏ

will visit

､ אֶתְכֶ֗ם

’eṯ·ḵem,

you ､

וְהֶעֱלָ֤ה

wə·he·‘ĕ·lāh

אֶתְכֶם֙

’eṯ·ḵem

מִן־

min-

הָאָ֣רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

､ הַזֹּ֔את

haz·zōṯ,

this ､

אֶל־

’el-

to

הָאָ֕רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

the land

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

נִשְׁבַּ֛ע

niš·ba‘

､ לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם

lə·’aḇ·rā·hām

to Abraham ､

､ לְיִצְחָ֖ק

lə·yiṣ·ḥāq

to Isaac ､

. וּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃

ū·lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ.

and to Jacob .

וַיַּשְׁבַּ֣ע

way·yaš·ba‘

And took an oath

יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

פָּקֹ֨ד

pā·qōḏ

יִפְקֹ֤ד

yip̄·qōḏ

will visit

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

､ אֶתְכֶ֔ם

’eṯ·ḵem,

you ､

וְהַעֲלִתֶ֥ם

wə·ha·‘ă·li·ṯem

and you shall carry up

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עַצְמֹתַ֖י

‘aṣ·mō·ṯay

. מִזֶּֽה׃

miz·zeh.

from this [place] .

וַיָּ֣מָת

way·yā·māṯ

יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

בֶּן־

ben-

מֵאָ֥ה

mê·’āh

וָעֶ֖שֶׂר

wā·‘e·śer

and ten

. שָׁנִ֑ים

šā·nîm;

וַיַּחַנְט֣וּ

way·ya·ḥan·ṭū

And they embalmed

､ אֹת֔וֹ

’ō·ṯōw,

him ､

וַיִּ֥ישֶׂם

way·yî·śem

and he was put

בָּאָר֖וֹן

bā·’ā·rō·wn

. בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃

bə·miṣ·rā·yim.

in Egypt .
