Woe to the City of David

ה֚וֹי

אֲרִיאֵ֣ל

’ă·rî·’êl

､ אֲרִיאֵ֔ל

’ă·rî·’êl,

to Ariel ､

קִרְיַ֖ת

qir·yaṯ

the city

! חָנָ֣ה

ḥā·nāh

[where] dwelt !

דָוִ֑ד

ḏā·wiḏ;

סְפ֥וּ

sə·p̄ū

שָׁנָ֛ה

šā·nāh

עַל־

‘al-

to

– שָׁנָ֖ה

šā·nāh

year –

חַגִּ֥ים

ḥag·gîm

. יִנְקֹֽפוּ׃

yin·qō·p̄ū.

let come around .

וַהֲצִיק֖וֹתִי

wa·hă·ṣî·qō·w·ṯî

And yet I will distress

､ לַֽאֲרִיאֵ֑ל

la·’ă·rî·’êl;

וְהָיְתָ֤ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and there shall be

תַֽאֲנִיָּה֙

ṯa·’ă·nî·yāh

– וַֽאֲנִיָּ֔ה

wa·’ă·nî·yāh,

and mourning –

וְהָ֥יְתָה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and it shall be

לִּ֖י

lî

to Me

. כַּאֲרִיאֵֽל׃

ka·’ă·rî·’êl.

as Ariel .

וְחָנִ֥יתִי

wə·ḥā·nî·ṯî

And I will encamp

､ כַדּ֖וּר

ḵad·dūr

עָלָ֑יִךְ

‘ā·lā·yiḵ;

וְצַרְתִּ֤י

wə·ṣar·tî

and I will lay siege

עָלַ֙יִךְ֙

‘ā·la·yiḵ

､ מֻצָּ֔ב

muṣ·ṣāḇ,

with a mound ､

וַהֲקִֽימֹתִ֥י

wa·hă·qî·mō·ṯî

and I will raise

עָלַ֖יִךְ

‘ā·la·yiḵ

. מְצֻרֹֽת׃

mə·ṣu·rōṯ.

､ וְשָׁפַלְתְּ֙

wə·šā·p̄alt

And You shall be brought down ､

､ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

out of the ground ､

תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי

tə·ḏab·bê·rî,

You shall speak

､ וּמֵֽעָפָ֖ר

ū·mê·‘ā·p̄ār

and out of the dust ､

תִּשַּׁ֣ח

tiš·šaḥ

אִמְרָתֵ֑ךְ

’im·rā·ṯêḵ;

､ וְֽ֠הָיָה

wə·hā·yāh

and shall be ､

､ כְּא֤וֹב

kə·’ō·wḇ

like a medium's ､

､ מֵאֶ֙רֶץ֙

mê·’e·reṣ

out of the ground ､

קוֹלֵ֔ךְ

qō·w·lêḵ,

וּמֵעָפָ֖ר

ū·mê·‘ā·p̄ār

and out of the dust

אִמְרָתֵ֥ךְ

’im·rā·ṯêḵ

. תְּצַפְצֵֽף׃

tə·ṣap̄·ṣêp̄.

shall whisper .

וְהָיָ֛ה

wə·hā·yāh

Moreover shall be

､ כְּאָבָ֥ק

kə·’ā·ḇāq

דַּ֖ק

daq

הֲמ֣וֹן

hă·mō·wn

זָרָ֑יִךְ

zā·rā·yiḵ;

וּכְמֹ֤ץ

ū·ḵə·mōṣ

– עֹבֵר֙

‘ō·ḇêr

that passes away –

הֲמ֣וֹן

hă·mō·wn

עָֽרִיצִ֔ים

‘ā·rî·ṣîm,

of the terrible ones

וְהָיָ֖ה

wə·hā·yāh

and Yes it shall be

לְפֶ֥תַע

lə·p̄e·ṯa‘

. פִּתְאֹֽם׃

piṯ·’ōm.

מֵעִ֨ם

mê·‘im

By

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

צְבָאוֹת֙

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

תִּפָּקֵ֔ד

tip·pā·qêḏ,

You will be punished

､ בְּרַ֥עַם

bə·ra·‘am

with thunder ､

､ וּבְרַ֖עַשׁ

ū·ḇə·ra·‘aš

and earthquake ､

､ וְק֣וֹל

wə·qō·wl

and noise ､

גָּד֑וֹל

gā·ḏō·wl;

סוּפָה֙

sū·p̄āh

[with] storm

､ וּסְעָרָ֔ה

ū·sə·‘ā·rāh,

and tempest ､

וְלַ֖הַב

wə·la·haḇ

and the flame

אֵ֥שׁ

’êš

. אוֹכֵלָֽה׃

’ō·w·ḵê·lāh.

וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And shall be

כַּֽחֲלוֹם֙

ka·ḥă·lō·wm

as a dream

. חֲז֣וֹן

ḥă·zō·wn

of a vision .

לַ֔יְלָה

lay·lāh,

הֲמוֹן֙

hă·mō·wn

כָּל־

kāl-

of all

הַגּוֹיִ֔ם

hag·gō·w·yim,

הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים

haṣ·ṣō·ḇə·’îm

עַל־

‘al-

､ אֲרִיאֵ֑ל

’ă·rî·’êl;

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

צֹבֶ֙יהָ֙

ṣō·ḇe·hā

who fight against her

､ וּמְצֹ֣דָתָ֔הּ

ū·mə·ṣō·ḏā·ṯāh,

and her fortress ､

וְהַמְּצִיקִ֖ים

wə·ham·mə·ṣî·qîm

. לָֽהּ׃

lāh.

וְהָיָ֡ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall even be

כַּאֲשֶׁר֩

ka·’ă·šer

､ יַחֲלֹ֨ם

ya·ḥă·lōm

הָרָעֵ֜ב

hā·rā·‘êḇ

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

and look ､

– אוֹכֵ֗ל

’ō·w·ḵêl,

he eats –

､ וְהֵקִיץ֮

wə·hê·qîṣ

but he awakes ､

､ וְרֵיקָ֣ה

wə·rê·qāh

and is still empty ､

נַפְשׁוֹ֒

nap̄·šōw

וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר

wə·ḵa·’ă·šer

Or as when

､ יַחֲלֹ֤ם

ya·ḥă·lōm

הַצָּמֵא֙

haṣ·ṣā·mê

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

and look ､

– שֹׁתֶ֔ה

šō·ṯeh,

he drinks –

､ וְהֵקִיץ֙

wə·hê·qîṣ

but he awakes ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

､ עָיֵ֔ף

‘ā·yêp̄,

[he is] faint ､

וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ

wə·nap̄·šōw

. שׁוֹקֵקָ֑ה

šō·w·qê·qāh;

כֵּ֣ן

kên

So

､ יִֽהְיֶ֗ה

yih·yeh,

shall be ､

הֲמוֹן֙

hă·mō·wn

כָּל־

kāl-

of all

הַגּוֹיִ֔ם

hag·gō·w·yim,

הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים

haṣ·ṣō·ḇə·’îm

עַל־

‘al-

הַ֥ר

har

. צִיּֽוֹן׃

ṣî·yō·wn.

ס

､ הִתְמַהְמְה֣וּ

hiṯ·mah·mə·hū

– וּתְמָ֔הוּ

ū·ṯə·mā·hū,

and wonder –

､ הִשְׁתַּֽעַשְׁע֖וּ

hiš·ta·‘aš·‘ū

Blind yourselves ､

– וָשֹׁ֑עוּ

wā·šō·‘ū;

and be blind –

､ שָֽׁכְר֣וּ

šā·ḵə·rū

they are drunk ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

but not

– יַ֔יִן

ya·yin,

with wine –

､ נָע֖וּ

nā·‘ū

they stagger ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

but not

. שֵׁכָֽר׃

šê·ḵār.

with intoxicating drink .

כִּֽי־

kî-

נָסַ֨ךְ

nā·saḵ

עֲלֵיכֶ֤ם

‘ă·lê·ḵem

on you

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

､ תַּרְדֵּמָ֔ה

tar·dê·māh,

of deep sleep ､

וַיְעַצֵּ֖ם

way·‘aṣ·ṣêm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ עֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם

‘ê·nê·ḵem;

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים

han·nə·ḇî·’îm

namely the prophets

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ רָאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם

rā·šê·ḵem

הַחֹזִ֖ים

ha·ḥō·zîm

[namely] the seers

. כִּסָּֽה׃

kis·sāh.

He has covered .

וַתְּהִ֨י

wat·tə·hî

לָכֶ֜ם

lā·ḵem

to you

חָז֣וּת

ḥā·zūṯ

הַכֹּ֗ל

hak·kōl,

כְּדִבְרֵי֮

kə·ḏiḇ·rê

הַסֵּ֣פֶר

has·sê·p̄er

､ הֶֽחָתוּם֒

he·ḥā·ṯūm

that is sealed ､

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

יִתְּנ֣וּ

yit·tə·nū

אֹת֗וֹ

’ō·ṯōw,

-

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יוֹדֵ֥עַ

yō·w·ḏê·a‘

one who is literate ､

[הספר]

has·sê·p̄er

-

､ (סֵ֛פֶר)

sê·p̄er

､ לֵאמֹ֖ר

lê·mōr

קְרָ֣א

qə·rā

– נָא־

nā-

､ זֶ֑ה

zeh;

this ､

､ וְאָמַר֙

wə·’ā·mar

and he says ､

לֹ֣א

אוּכַ֔ל

’ū·ḵal,

I

כִּ֥י

kî

חָת֖וּם

ḥā·ṯūm

. הֽוּא׃

hū.

it .

וְנִתַּ֣ן

wə·nit·tan

And is delivered

הַסֵּ֗פֶר

has·sê·p̄er,

the book

עַל֩

‘al

to

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

､ יָדַ֥ע

yā·ḏa‘

is illiterate ､

סֵ֛פֶר

sê·p̄er

the book

､ לֵאמֹ֖ר

lê·mōr

קְרָ֣א

qə·rā

– נָא־

nā-

､ זֶ֑ה

zeh;

this ､

､ וְאָמַ֕ר

wə·’ā·mar

and he says ､

לֹ֥א

not

יָדַ֖עְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî

. סֵֽפֶר׃

sê·p̄er.

the book .

､ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

Therefore said ､

אֲדֹנָ֗י

’ă·ḏō·nāy,

יַ֚עַן

ya·‘an

כִּ֤י

kî

נִגַּשׁ֙

nig·gaš

הָעָ֣ם

hā·‘ām

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

､ בְּפִ֤יו

bə·p̄îw

with their mouths ､

וּבִשְׂפָתָיו֙

ū·ḇiś·p̄ā·ṯāw

and with their lips

כִּבְּד֔וּנִי

kib·bə·ḏū·nî,

וְלִבּ֖וֹ

wə·lib·bōw

but their hearts

רִחַ֣ק

ri·ḥaq

have removed far

מִמֶּ֑נִּי

mim·men·nî;

וַתְּהִ֤י

wat·tə·hî

and is

יִרְאָתָם֙

yir·’ā·ṯām

אֹתִ֔י

’ō·ṯî,

מִצְוַ֥ת

miṣ·waṯ

by the commandment

– אֲנָשִׁ֖ים

’ă·nā·šîm

of men –

. מְלֻמָּדָֽה׃

mə·lum·mā·ḏāh.

､ לָכֵ֗ן

lā·ḵên,

הִנְנִ֥י

hin·nî

יוֹסִ֛ף

yō·w·sip̄

will again

לְהַפְלִ֥יא

lə·hap̄·lî

do a marvelous work

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ הָֽעָם־

hā·‘ām-

Among people ､

הַזֶּ֖ה

haz·zeh

הַפְלֵ֣א

hap̄·lê

a marvelous work

– וָפֶ֑לֶא

wā·p̄e·le;

and a wonder –

､ וְאָֽבְדָה֙

wə·’ā·ḇə·ḏāh

for shall perish ､

חָכְמַ֣ת

ḥā·ḵə·maṯ

חֲכָמָ֔יו

ḥă·ḵā·māw,

of their wise [men]

וּבִינַ֥ת

ū·ḇî·naṯ

and the understanding

נְבֹנָ֖יו

nə·ḇō·nāw

of their prudent [men]

. תִּסְתַּתָּֽר׃

tis·tat·tār.

shall be hidden .

Woe to

הַמַּעֲמִיקִ֥ים

ham·ma·‘ă·mî·qîm

those who seek deep

מֵֽיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

לַסְתִּ֣ר

las·tir

עֵצָ֑ה

‘ê·ṣāh;

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

and are

､ בְמַחְשָׁךְ֙

ḇə·maḥ·šāḵ

in the dark ､

מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם

ma·‘ă·śê·hem,

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

and they say ､

מִ֥י

mî

רֹאֵ֖נוּ

rō·’ê·nū

וּמִ֥י

ū·mî

and who

. יוֹדְעֵֽנוּ׃

yō·wḏ·‘ê·nū.

knows us .

הַ֨פְכְּכֶ֔ם

hap̄·kə·ḵem,

You have turned things around

אִם־

’im-

､ כְּחֹ֥מֶר

kə·ḥō·mer

as the clay ､

הַיֹּצֵ֖ר

hay·yō·ṣêr

יֵֽחָשֵׁ֑ב

yê·ḥā·šêḇ;

shall be esteemed

כִּֽי־

kî-

יֹאמַ֨ר

yō·mar

מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה

ma·‘ă·śeh

לְעֹשֵׂ֙הוּ֙

lə·‘ō·śê·hū

of him who made it

؟ לֹ֣א

lō

not ؟

עָשָׂ֔נִי

‘ā·śā·nî,

He did make me

וְיֵ֛צֶר

wə·yê·ṣer

Or the thing formed

אָמַ֥ר

’ā·mar

לְיוֹצְר֖וֹ

lə·yō·wṣ·rōw

of him who formed it

לֹ֥א

lō

no

. הֵבִֽין׃

hê·ḇîn.

He has understanding .

Sanctification to the Godly

הֲלוֹא־

hă·lō·w-

[Is] it not

עוֹד֙

‘ō·wḏ

､ מְעַ֣ט

mə·‘aṭ

a little while ､

מִזְעָ֔ר

miz·‘ār,

וְשָׁ֥ב

wə·šāḇ

and shall be turned

לְבָנ֖וֹן

lə·ḇā·nō·wn

､ לַכַּרְמֶ֑ל

lak·kar·mel;

into a fruitful field ､

וְהַכַּרְמֶ֖ל

wə·hak·kar·mel

and the fruitful field

לַיַּ֥עַר

lay·ya·‘ar

؟ יֵחָשֵֽׁב׃

yê·ḥā·šêḇ.

וְשָׁמְע֧וּ

wə·šā·mə·‘ū

בַיּוֹם־

ḇay·yō·wm-

in day

הַה֛וּא

ha·hū

הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים

ha·ḥê·rə·šîm

the deaf

דִּבְרֵי־

diḇ·rê-

､ סֵ֑פֶר

sê·p̄er;

of the book ､

､ וּמֵאֹ֣פֶל

ū·mê·’ō·p̄el

and out of darkness ､

. וּמֵחֹ֔שֶׁךְ

ū·mê·ḥō·šeḵ,

and out of [deep] darkness .

עֵינֵ֥י

‘ê·nê

The eyes

עִוְרִ֖ים

‘iw·rîm

of the blind

. תִּרְאֶֽינָה׃

tir·’e·nāh.

וְיָסְפ֧וּ

wə·yā·sə·p̄ū

And shall increase

עֲנָוִ֛ים

‘ă·nā·wîm

､ בַּֽיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

in Yahweh ､

שִׂמְחָ֑ה

śim·ḥāh;

וְאֶבְיוֹנֵ֣י

wə·’eḇ·yō·w·nê

and the poor

אָדָ֔ם

’ā·ḏām,

בִּקְד֥וֹשׁ

biq·ḏō·wōš

in the Holy one

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. יָגִֽילוּ׃

yā·ḡî·lū.

shall rejoice .

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ אָפֵ֥ס

’ā·p̄ês

is brought to nothing ､

עָרִ֖יץ

‘ā·rîṣ

the terrible one

､ וְכָ֣לָה

wə·ḵā·lāh

and is consumed ､

לֵ֑ץ

lêṣ;

the scornful one

– וְנִכְרְת֖וּ

wə·niḵ·rə·ṯū

and are cut off –

כָּל־

kāl-

שֹׁ֥קְדֵי

šō·qə·ḏê

. אָֽוֶן׃

’ā·wen.

מַחֲטִיאֵ֤י

ma·ḥă·ṭî·’ê

Who make an offender

אָדָם֙

’ā·ḏām

､ בְּדָבָ֔ר

bə·ḏā·ḇār,

by a word ､

וְלַמּוֹכִ֥יחַ

wə·lam·mō·w·ḵî·aḥ

and for him who reproves

､ בַּשַּׁ֖עַר

baš·ša·‘ar

in the gate ､

יְקֹשׁ֑וּן

yə·qō·šūn;

וַיַּטּ֥וּ

way·yaṭ·ṭū

בַתֹּ֖הוּ

ḇat·tō·hū

by empty [words]

. צַדִּֽיק׃

ṣad·dîq.

the just .

לָכֵ֗ן

lā·ḵên,

כֹּֽה־

kōh-

אָמַ֤ר

’ā·mar

､ יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֶל־

’el-

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

､ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

of Jacob ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

פָּדָ֖ה

pā·ḏāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אַבְרָהָ֑ם

’aḇ·rā·hām;

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

עַתָּ֤ה

‘at·tāh

､ יֵבוֹשׁ֙

yê·ḇō·wōš

shall be ashamed ､

יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

עַתָּ֖ה

‘at·tāh

פָּנָ֥יו

pā·nāw

. יֶחֱוָֽרוּ׃

ye·ḥĕ·wā·rū.

shall grow pale .

כִּ֣י

kî

But

בִ֠רְאֹתוֹ

ḇir·’ō·ṯōw

､ יְלָדָ֞יו

yə·lā·ḏāw

his children ､

מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה

ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

､ יָדַ֛י

yā·ḏay

of My hands ､

בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ

bə·qir·bōw

יַקְדִּ֣ישֽׁוּ

yaq·dî·šū

they shall sanctify

､ שְׁמִ֑י

šə·mî;

My name ､

וְהִקְדִּ֙ישׁוּ֙

wə·hiq·dî·šū

they shall sanctify

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

קְד֣וֹשׁ

qə·ḏō·wōš

､ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

of Jacob ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

אֱלֹהֵ֥י

’ĕ·lō·hê

the God

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. יַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃

ya·‘ă·rî·ṣū.

וְיָדְע֥וּ

wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū

And these will come to

תֹֽעֵי־

ṯō·‘ê-

ר֖וּחַ

rū·aḥ

､ בִּינָ֑ה

bî·nāh;

understanding ､

וְרוֹגְנִ֖ים

wə·rō·wḡ·nîm

and those who complained

יִלְמְדוּ־

yil·mə·ḏū-

will learn

. לֶֽקַח׃

le·qaḥ.
