The Lord has Chosen Israel

וְעַתָּ֥ה

wə·‘at·tāh

､ שְׁמַ֖ע

šə·ma‘

hear ､

יַעֲקֹ֣ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

– עַבְדִּ֑י

‘aḇ·dî;

My servant –

､ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

wə·yiś·rā·’êl

and Israel ､

– בָּחַ֥רְתִּי

bā·ḥar·tî

I have chosen –

. בֽוֹ׃

ḇōw.

כֹּה־

kōh-

אָמַ֨ר

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

עֹשֶׂ֛ךָ

‘ō·śe·ḵā

וְיֹצֶרְךָ֥

wə·yō·ṣer·ḵā

､ מִבֶּ֖טֶן

mib·be·ṭen

from the womb ､

יַעְזְרֶ֑ךָּ

ya‘·zə·re·kā;

[who] will help you

､ אַל־

’al-

not ､

תִּירָא֙

tî·rā

– עַבְדִּ֣י

‘aḇ·dî

My servant –

､ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

､ וִישֻׁר֖וּן

wî·šu·rūn

and you Jeshurun ､

בָּחַ֥רְתִּי

bā·ḥar·tî

. בֽוֹ׃

ḇōw.

כִּ֤י

kî

אֶצָּק־

’eṣ·ṣāq-

I will pour

מַ֙יִם֙

ma·yim

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ צָמֵ֔א

ṣā·mê,

him who is thirsty ､

וְנֹזְלִ֖ים

wə·nō·zə·lîm

עַל־

‘al-

on

– יַבָּשָׁ֑ה

yab·bā·šāh;

the dry ground –

אֶצֹּ֤ק

’eṣ·ṣōq

I will pour

רוּחִי֙

rū·ḥî

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ זַרְעֶ֔ךָ

zar·‘e·ḵā,

your descendants ､

וּבִרְכָתִ֖י

ū·ḇir·ḵā·ṯî

and My blessing

עַל־

‘al-

on

– צֶאֱצָאֶֽיךָ׃

ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’e·ḵā.

your offspring –

וְצָמְח֖וּ

wə·ṣā·mə·ḥū

and they will spring up

בְּבֵ֣ין

bə·ḇên

､ חָצִ֑יר

ḥā·ṣîr;

the grass ､

כַּעֲרָבִ֖ים

ka·‘ă·rā·ḇîm

עַל־

‘al-

by

יִבְלֵי־

yiḇ·lê-

. מָֽיִם׃

mā·yim.

the watercourses .

זֶ֤ה

zeh

､ יֹאמַר֙

yō·mar

will say ､

– לַֽיהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

אָ֔נִי

’ā·nî,

I [am]

וְזֶ֖ה

wə·zeh

and this [one]

יִקְרָ֣א

yiq·rā

will call [himself]

בְשֵֽׁם־

ḇə·šêm-

by the name

– יַעֲקֹ֑ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ;

of Jacob –

וְזֶ֗ה

wə·zeh,

and this [one]

יִכְתֹּ֤ב

yiḵ·tōḇ

will write

יָדוֹ֙

yā·ḏōw

[with] his hand

､ לַֽיהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

וּבְשֵׁ֥ם

ū·ḇə·šêm

and by the name

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. יְכַנֶּֽה׃

yə·ḵan·neh.

name [himself] .

וְגֹאֲל֖וֹ

and his Redeemer

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

– צְבָא֑וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ;

of hosts –

אֲנִ֤י

’ă·nî

I [am]

､ רִאשׁוֹן֙

ri·šō·wn

the First ､

וַאֲנִ֣י

wa·’ă·nî

and I [am]

– אַחֲר֔וֹן

’a·ḥă·rō·wn,

the Last –

וּמִבַּלְעָדַ֖י

ū·mib·bal·‘ā·ḏay

and Besides Me

אֵ֥ין

’ên

[there is] no

. אֱלֹהִֽים׃

’ĕ·lō·hîm.

､ וּמִֽי־

ū·mî-

And who ､

כָמ֣וֹנִי

ḵā·mō·w·nî

as I do

､ יִקְרָ֗א

yiq·rā,

can proclaim ､

וְיַגִּידֶ֤הָ

wə·yag·gî·ḏe·hā

and let him declare it

וְיַעְרְכֶ֙הָ֙

wə·ya‘·rə·ḵe·hā

and set it in order

לִ֔י

lî,

for Me

מִשּׂוּמִ֖י

miś·śū·mî

Since I appointed

؟ עַם־

‘am-

the people ؟

עוֹלָ֑ם

‘ō·w·lām;

､ וְאֹתִיּ֛וֹת

wə·’ō·ṯî·yō·wṯ

and the things that are coming ､

וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר

wa·’ă·šer

and

､ תָּבֹ֖אנָה

tā·ḇō·nāh

יַגִּ֥ידוּ

yag·gî·ḏū

let them show these

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

to them .

､ אַֽל־

’al-

Not ､

תִּפְחֲדוּ֙

tip̄·ḥă·ḏū

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

– תִּרְה֔וּ

tir·hū,

be afraid –

הֲלֹ֥א

hă·lō

have not

､ מֵאָ֛ז

mê·’āz

from then [on] ､

הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֥יךָ

hiš·ma‘·tî·ḵā

וְהִגַּ֖דְתִּי

wə·hig·gaḏ·tî

and declared [it]

וְאַתֶּ֣ם

wə·’at·tem

and You [are]

. עֵדָ֑י

‘ê·ḏāy;

הֲיֵ֤שׁ

hă·yêš

אֱל֙וֹהַּ֙

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

מִבַּלְעָדַ֔י

mib·bal·‘ā·ḏay,

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and indeed [there is] no other

– צ֖וּר

ṣūr

Rock –

בַּל־

bal-

not

. יָדָֽעְתִּי׃

yā·ḏā·‘ə·tî.

I know [one] .

The Folly of Idolatry

יֹֽצְרֵי־

yō·ṣə·rê-

פֶ֤סֶל

p̄e·sel

כֻּלָּם֙

kul·lām

– תֹּ֔הוּ

tō·hū,

[are] useless –

וַחֲמוּדֵיהֶ֖ם

wa·ḥă·mū·ḏê·hem

and their precious things

בַּל־

bal-

not

– יוֹעִ֑ילוּ

yō·w·‘î·lū;

shall profit –

– וְעֵדֵיהֶ֣ם

wə·‘ê·ḏê·hem

and their own witnesses –

הֵׄ֗מָּׄהׄ‪‬

hêm·māh,

､ בַּל־

bal-

יִרְא֛וּ

yir·’ū

וּבַל־

ū·ḇal-

– יֵדְע֖וּ

yê·ḏə·‘ū

know –

לְמַ֥עַן

lə·ma·‘an

. יֵבֹֽשׁוּ׃

yê·ḇō·šū.

they may be ashamed .

מִֽי־

mî-

יָצַ֥ר

yā·ṣar

､ אֵ֖ל

’êl

a god ､

וּפֶ֣סֶל

ū·p̄e·sel

or an image

נָסָ֑ךְ

nā·sāḵ;

לְבִלְתִּ֖י

lə·ḇil·tî

؟ הוֹעִֽיל׃

hō·w·‘îl.

[That] profits him ؟

､ הֵ֤ן

hên

כָּל־

kāl-

חֲבֵרָיו֙

ḥă·ḇê·rāw

– יֵבֹ֔שׁוּ

yê·ḇō·šū,

would be ashamed –

､ וְחָרָשִׁ֥ים

wə·ḥā·rā·šîm

and the workmen ､

הֵ֖מָּה

hêm·māh

. מֵֽאָדָ֑ם

mê·’ā·ḏām;

､ יִֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ

yiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū

Let be gathered together ､

כֻלָּם֙

ḵul·lām

– יַֽעֲמֹ֔דוּ

ya·‘ă·mō·ḏū,

let them stand up –

､ יִפְחֲד֖וּ

yip̄·ḥă·ḏū

yet they shall fear ､

יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ

yê·ḇō·šū

they shall be ashamed

. יָֽחַד׃

yā·ḥaḏ.

חָרַ֤שׁ

ḥā·raš

בַּרְזֶל֙

bar·zel

מַֽעֲצָ֔ד

ma·‘ă·ṣāḏ,

with the tongs

וּפָעַל֙

ū·p̄ā·‘al

､ בַּפֶּחָ֔ם

bap·pe·ḥām,

in the coals ､

､ וּבַמַּקָּב֖וֹת

ū·ḇam·maq·qā·ḇō·wṯ

and with hammers ､

יִצְּרֵ֑הוּ

yiṣ·ṣə·rê·hū;

וַיִּפְעָלֵ֙הוּ֙

way·yip̄·‘ā·lê·hū

and works it

. בִּזְר֣וֹעַ

biz·rō·w·a‘

with his arms .

כֹּח֔וֹ

kō·ḥōw,

､ גַּם־

gam-

of Even so ､

､ רָעֵב֙

rā·‘êḇ

he is hungry ､

– וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and [there is] no –

כֹּ֔חַ

kō·aḥ,

לֹא־

lō-

no

שָׁ֥תָה

šā·ṯāh

､ מַ֖יִם

ma·yim

. וַיִּיעָֽף׃

way·yî·‘āp̄.

and is faint .

חָרַ֣שׁ

ḥā·raš

עֵצִים֮

‘ê·ṣîm

נָ֣טָה

nā·ṭāh

– קָו֒

qāw

[his] rule –

יְתָאֲרֵ֣הוּ

yə·ṯā·’ă·rê·hū

He marks one out

– בַשֶּׂ֔רֶד

ḇaś·śe·reḏ,

with chalk –

יַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙

ya·‘ă·śê·hū

､ בַּמַּקְצֻע֔וֹת

bam·maq·ṣu·‘ō·wṯ,

with a plane ､

､ וּבַמְּחוּגָ֖ה

ū·ḇam·mə·ḥū·ḡāh

and with the compass ､

יְתָאֳרֵ֑הוּ

yə·ṯā·’o·rê·hū;

He marks it out

וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙

way·ya·‘ă·śê·hū

and makes it

כְּתַבְנִ֣ית

kə·ṯaḇ·nîṯ

like the figure

､ אִ֔ישׁ

’îš,

of a man ､

כְּתִפְאֶ֥רֶת

kə·ṯip̄·’e·reṯ

According to the beauty

– אָדָ֖ם

’ā·ḏām

of a man –

לָשֶׁ֥בֶת

lā·še·ḇeṯ

that it may remain

. בָּֽיִת׃

bā·yiṯ.

in the house .

לִכְרָת־

liḵ·rāṯ-

ל֣וֹ

lōw

､ אֲרָזִ֔ים

’ă·rā·zîm,

וַיִּקַּ֤ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

תִּרְזָה֙

tir·zāh

､ וְאַלּ֔וֹן

wə·’al·lō·wn,

and the oak ､

וַיְאַמֶּץ־

way·’am·meṣ-

and He secures [it]

ל֖וֹ

lōw

בַּעֲצֵי־

ba·‘ă·ṣê-

among the trees

. יָ֑עַר

yā·‘ar;

of the forest .

נָטַ֥ע

nā·ṭa‘

､ אֹ֖רֶן‪‬

’ō·ren

a pine ､

וְגֶ֥שֶׁם

wə·ḡe·šem

and the rain

. יְגַדֵּֽל׃

yə·ḡad·dêl.

nourishes [it] .

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall be

לְאָדָם֙

lə·’ā·ḏām

､ לְבָעֵ֔ר

lə·ḇā·‘êr,

to burn ､

וַיִּקַּ֤ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

for he will take some

מֵהֶם֙

mê·hem

of it

וַיָּ֔חָם

way·yā·ḥām,

and warm himself

､ אַף־

’ap̄-

Yes ､

יַשִּׂ֖יק

yaś·śîq

he kindles [it]

וְאָ֣פָה

wə·’ā·p̄āh

– לָ֑חֶם

lā·ḥem;

､ אַף־

’ap̄-

יִפְעַל־

yip̄·‘al-

､ אֵל֙

’êl

a god ､

וַיִּשְׁתָּ֔חוּ

way·yiš·tā·ḥū,

and worships [it]

עָשָׂ֥הוּ

‘ā·śā·hū

He makes it

､ פֶ֖סֶל

p̄e·sel

a carved image ､

וַיִּסְגָּד־

way·yis·gāḏ-

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

to it .

חֶצְיוֹ֙

ḥeṣ·yōw

Half of it

שָׂרַ֣ף

בְּמוֹ־

bə·mōw-

in

– אֵ֔שׁ

’êš,

the fire –

עַל־

‘al-

with

חֶצְיוֹ֙

– בָּשָׂ֣ר

יִצְלֶ֥ה

yiṣ·leh

､ צָלִ֖י

a roast ､

. וְיִשְׂבָּ֑ע

and is satisfied .

､ אַף־

Even ､

יָחֹם֙

yā·ḥōm

He warms [himself]

､ וְיֹאמַ֣ר

wə·yō·mar

and says ､

､ הֶאָ֔ח

he·’āḥ,

Ah ､

､ חַמּוֹתִ֖י

ḥam·mō·w·ṯî

I am warm ､

רָאִ֥יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

. אֽוּר׃

’ūr.

the fire .

וּשְׁאֵ֣רִית֔וֹ

ū·šə·’ê·rî·ṯōw,

And the rest of it

､ לְאֵ֥ל

lə·’êl

into a god ､

עָשָׂ֖ה

‘ā·śāh

– לְפִסְל֑וֹ

lə·p̄is·lōw;

His carved image –

so that they cannot see –

､ עֵֽינֵיהֶ֔ם

so that they cannot understand

. לִבֹּתָֽם׃

lib·bō·ṯām.

[And] their hearts .

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

And no one

יָשִׁ֣יב

אֶל־

’el-

in

､ לִבּ֗וֹ

lib·bōw,

וְלֹ֨א

wə·lō

דַ֥עַת

ḏa·‘aṯ

[is there] knowledge

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

תְבוּנָה֮

ṯə·ḇū·nāh

､ לֵאמֹר֒

lê·mōr

to say ､

חֶצְי֞וֹ

ḥeṣ·yōw

half of it

שָׂרַ֣פְתִּי

בְמוֹ־

ḇə·mōw-

in

– אֵ֗שׁ

’êš,

the fire –

､ וְ֠אַף

wə·’ap̄

and Yes ､

אָפִ֤יתִי

’ā·p̄î·ṯî

עַל־

‘al-

on

גֶּחָלָיו֙

ge·ḥā·lāw

לֶ֔חֶם

le·ḥem,

אֶצְלֶ֥ה

’eṣ·leh

､ בָשָׂ֖ר

ḇā·śār

meat ､

וְאֹכֵ֑ל

wə·’ō·ḵêl;

and eaten [it]

וְיִתְרוֹ֙

wə·yiṯ·rōw

and the rest of it

؟ לְתוֹעֵבָ֣ה

lə·ṯō·w·‘ê·ḇāh

an abomination ؟

אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה

’e·‘ĕ·śeh,

לְב֥וּל

lə·ḇūl

עֵ֖ץ

‘êṣ

؟ אֶסְגּֽוֹד׃

shall I fall down ؟

רֹעֶ֣ה

rō·‘eh

– אֵ֔פֶר

on ashes –

לֵ֥ב

הוּתַ֖ל

hū·ṯal

､ הִטָּ֑הוּ

hiṭ·ṭā·hū;

has turned him aside ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

יַצִּ֤יל

yaṣ·ṣîl

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ נַפְשׁוֹ֙

nap̄·šōw

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

､ יֹאמַ֔ר

yō·mar,

say ､

הֲל֥וֹא

hă·lō·w

[is there] not

שֶׁ֖קֶר

še·qer

؟ בִּימִינִֽי׃

bî·mî·nî.

in my right hand ؟

and Israel –

כִּ֣י

My servant –

אָ֑תָּה

’āt·tāh;

יְצַרְתִּ֤יךָ

yə·ṣar·tî·ḵā

I have formed you

､ עֶֽבֶד־

‘e·ḇeḏ-

לִי֙

lî

My

אַ֔תָּה

’at·tāh,

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

לֹ֥א

not

. תִנָּשֵֽׁנִי׃

ṯin·nā·šê·nî.

you will be forgotten by Me .

､ מָחִ֤יתִי

mā·ḥî·ṯî

I have blotted out ､

､ כָעָב֙

ḵā·‘āḇ

like a [thick] cloud ､

､ פְּשָׁעֶ֔יךָ

pə·šā·‘e·ḵā,

your transgressions ､

､ וְכֶעָנָ֖ן

wə·ḵe·‘ā·nān

and like a cloud ､

– חַטֹּאותֶ֑יךָ

ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯe·ḵā;

שׁוּבָ֥ה

šū·ḇāh

אֵלַ֖י

’ê·lay

to Me

כִּ֥י

kî

. גְאַלְתִּֽיךָ׃

ḡə·’al·tî·ḵā.

I have redeemed you .

､ רָנּ֨וּ

rān·nū

Sing ､

– שָׁמַ֜יִם

šā·ma·yim

כִּֽי־

kî-

עָשָׂ֣ה

‘ā·śāh

יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

､ הָרִ֙יעוּ֙

hā·rî·‘ū

תַּחְתִּיּ֣וֹת

taḥ·tî·yō·wṯ

you lower parts

– אָ֔רֶץ

’ā·reṣ,

of the earth –

פִּצְח֤וּ

piṣ·ḥū

､ הָרִים֙

hā·rîm

you mountains ､

､ רִנָּ֔ה

rin·nāh,

into singing ､

､ יַ֖עַר

ya·‘ar

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

עֵ֣ץ

‘êṣ

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

in it

כִּֽי־

kî-

גָאַ֤ל

ḡā·’al

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

､ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

וּבְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

ū·ḇə·yiś·rā·’êl

and in Israel

. יִתְפָּאָֽר׃

yiṯ·pā·’ār.

glorified Himself .

– לְבַדִּ֔י

who spreads abroad

הָאָ֖רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

[מי]

[אתי]

､ בַּדִּ֔ים

bad·dîm,

of the babblers ､

וְקֹסְמִ֖ים

– יְהוֹלֵ֑ל

yə·hō·w·lêl;

מֵשִׁ֧יב

mê·šîḇ

חֲכָמִ֛ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

､ אָח֖וֹר

’ā·ḥō·wr

וְדַעְתָּ֥ם

wə·ḏa‘·tām

and their knowledge

– יְשַׂכֵּֽל׃

yə·śak·kêl.

makes foolishness –

מֵקִים֙

mê·qîm

דְּבַ֣ר

də·ḇar

the word

､ עַבְדּ֔וֹ

‘aḇ·dōw,

of His servant ､

וַעֲצַ֥ת

wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ

and the counsel

– מַלְאָכָ֖יו

mal·’ā·ḵāw

of His messengers –

יַשְׁלִ֑ים

yaš·lîm;

הָאֹמֵ֨ר

hā·’ō·mêr

､ לִירוּשָׁלִַ֜ם

lî·rū·šā·lim

to Jerusalem ､

– תּוּשָׁ֗ב

tū·šāḇ,

You shall be inhabited –

וּלְעָרֵ֤י

ū·lə·‘ā·rê

and to the cities

､ יְהוּדָה֙

yə·hū·ḏāh

of Judah ､

､ תִּבָּנֶ֔ינָה

tib·bā·ne·nāh,

You shall be built ､

וְחָרְבוֹתֶ֖יהָ

wə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā

and her waste places

. אֲקוֹמֵֽם׃

’ă·qō·w·mêm.

I will raise up .

הָאֹמֵ֥ר

hā·’ō·mêr

､ לַצּוּלָ֖ה

laṣ·ṣū·lāh

to the deep ､

､ חֳרָ֑בִי

ḥo·rā·ḇî;

Be dry ､

– וְנַהֲרֹתַ֖יִךְ

wə·na·hă·rō·ṯa·yiḵ

and your rivers –

. אוֹבִֽישׁ׃

’ō·w·ḇîš.

I will dry up .

הָאֹמֵ֤ר

hā·’ō·mêr

､ לְכ֙וֹרֶשׁ֙

lə·ḵō·w·reš

of Cyrus ､

רֹעִ֔י

rō·‘î,

[He is] My shepherd

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

– חֶפְצִ֖י

ḥep̄·ṣî

My pleasure –

יַשְׁלִ֑ם

yaš·lim;

he shall perform

וְלֵאמֹ֤ר

wə·lê·mōr

､ לִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙

lî·rū·šā·lim

to Jerusalem ､

– תִּבָּנֶ֔ה

tib·bā·neh,

You shall be built –

､ וְהֵיכָ֖ל

wə·hê·ḵāl

and to the temple ､

. תִּוָּסֵֽד׃

tiw·wā·sêḏ.

Your foundation shall be laid .
