If

､ תָּשׁ֨וּב

you will return ､

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל ׀

yiś·rā·’êl

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֛ה

Yah·weh

אֵלַ֖י

’ê·lay

to Me

תָּשׁ֑וּב

tā·šūḇ;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if

תָּסִ֧יר

tā·sîr

you will put away

שִׁקּוּצֶ֛יךָ

šiq·qū·ṣe·ḵā

your abominations

､ מִפָּנַ֖י

mip·pā·nay

out of My sight ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

. תָנֽוּד׃

ṯā·nūḏ.

you shall be moved .

､ וְנִשְׁבַּ֙עְתָּ֙

wə·niš·ba‘·tā

And you shall swear ､

､ חַי־

ḥay-

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

､ בֶּאֱמֶ֖ת

be·’ĕ·meṯ

in truth ､

､ בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט

bə·miš·pāṭ

in judgment ､

– וּבִצְדָקָ֑ה

ū·ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāh;

and in righteousness –

וְהִתְבָּ֥רְכוּ

wə·hiṯ·bā·rə·ḵū

and shall bless themselves

ב֛וֹ

ḇōw

in Him

גּוֹיִ֖ם

gō·w·yim

וּב֥וֹ

ū·ḇōw

and in Him

. יִתְהַלָּֽלוּ׃

yiṯ·hal·lā·lū.

they shall glory .

יְהֹוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

לְאִ֤ישׁ

to the men

יְהוּדָה֙

､ וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם

wə·lî·rū·šā·lim,

and Jerusalem ､

נִ֥ירוּ

nî·rū

לָכֶ֖ם

lā·ḵem

､ נִ֑יר

nîr;

fallow ground ､

וְאַֽל־

wə·’al-

and not

תִּזְרְע֖וּ

tiz·rə·‘ū

do sow

אֶל־

’el-

. קוֹצִֽים׃

qō·w·ṣîm.

הִמֹּ֣לוּ

him·mō·lū

Circumcise yourselves

､ לַיהֹוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

to Yahweh ､

וְהָסִ֙רוּ֙

wə·hā·si·rū

עָרְל֣וֹת

‘ā·rə·lō·wṯ

､ לְבַבְכֶ֔ם

lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem,

of your hearts ､

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

וְיֹשְׁבֵ֣י

wə·yō·šə·ḇê

and inhabitants

､ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

yə·rū·šā·lim;

of Jerusalem ､

פֶּן־

pen-

תֵּצֵ֨א

tê·ṣê

､ כָאֵ֜שׁ

ḵā·’êš

חֲמָתִ֗י

ḥă·mā·ṯî,

וּבָעֲרָה֙

ū·ḇā·‘ă·rāh

and burn

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

so that no one

מְכַבֶּ֔ה

mə·ḵab·beh,

can quench [it]

מִפְּנֵ֖י

mip·pə·nê

רֹ֥עַ

rō·a‘

of the evil

. מַעַלְלֵיכֶֽם׃

ma·‘al·lê·ḵem.

of your doings .

Disaster from the North

הַגִּ֣ידוּ

hag·gî·ḏū

､ בִֽיהוּדָ֗ה

ḇî·hū·ḏāh,

in Judah ､

– וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙

ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim

and in Jerusalem –

הַשְׁמִ֔יעוּ

haš·mî·‘ū,

､ וְאִמְר֕וּ

wə·’im·rū

and say ､

[ותקעו]

w·tiq·‘ū

-

(תִּקְע֥וּ)

tiq·‘ū

שׁוֹפָ֖ר

šō·w·p̄ār

– בָּאָ֑רֶץ

bā·’ā·reṣ;

in the land –

､ קִרְא֤וּ

qir·’ū

Cry ､

､ מַלְאוּ֙

mal·’ū

Gather together ､

､ וְאִמְר֔וּ

wə·’im·rū,

and say ､

､ הֵאָסְפ֥וּ

hê·’ā·sə·p̄ū

Assemble yourselves ､

וְנָב֖וֹאָה

wə·nā·ḇō·w·’āh

and let us go

אֶל־

’el-

עָרֵ֥י

‘ā·rê

. הַמִּבְצָֽר׃

ham·miḇ·ṣār.

the fortified .

שְׂאוּ־

śə·’ū-

Set up

נֵ֣ס

nês

! צִיּ֔וֹנָה

ṣî·yō·w·nāh,

､ הָעִ֖יזוּ

hā·‘î·zū

take refuge ､

– אַֽל־

’al-

not –

תַּעֲמֹ֑דוּ

ta·‘ă·mō·ḏū;

כִּ֣י

kî

רָעָ֗ה

rā·‘āh,

אָנֹכִ֛י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

מֵבִ֥יא

mê·ḇî

will bring

､ מִצָּפ֖וֹן

miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn

from the north ､

וְשֶׁ֥בֶר

wə·še·ḇer

and destruction

. גָּדֽוֹל׃

gā·ḏō·wl.

עָלָ֤ה

‘ā·lāh

אַרְיֵה֙

’ar·yêh

the lion

､ מִֽסֻּבְּכ֔וֹ

mis·sub·bə·ḵōw,

from his thicket ､

וּמַשְׁחִ֣ית

ū·maš·ḥîṯ

and the destroyer

גּוֹיִ֔ם

gō·w·yim,

– נָסַ֖ע

nā·sa‘

is on his way –

יָצָ֣א

yā·ṣā

He has gone forth

מִמְּקֹמ֑וֹ

mim·mə·qō·mōw;

לָשׂ֤וּם

lā·śūm

אַרְצֵךְ֙

’ar·ṣêḵ

– לְשַׁמָּ֔ה

lə·šam·māh,

עָרַ֥יִךְ

‘ā·ra·yiḵ

､ תִּצֶּ֖ינָה

tiṣ·ṣe·nāh

will be laid waste ､

מֵאֵ֥ין

mê·’ên

. יוֹשֵֽׁב׃

yō·wō·šêḇ.

עַל־

‘al-

זֹ֛את

zōṯ

חִגְר֥וּ

ḥiḡ·rū

clothe yourself

､ שַׂקִּ֖ים

śaq·qîm

with sackcloth ､

סִפְד֣וּ

sip̄·ḏū

– וְהֵילִ֑ילוּ

wə·hê·lî·lū;

and wail –

כִּ֥י

kî

לֹא־

lō-

not

שָׁ֛ב

šāḇ

Has turned back

חֲר֥וֹן

ḥă·rō·wn

אַף־

’ap̄-

יְהֹוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

mim·men·nū.

from us .

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall come to pass

､ בַיּוֹם־

ḇay·yō·wm-

in day ､

הַהוּא֙

ha·hū

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

､ יֹאבַ֥ד

yō·ḇaḏ

[That] shall perish ､

לֵב־

lêḇ-

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

of the king

וְלֵ֣ב

wə·lêḇ

and the heart

– הַשָּׂרִ֑ים

haś·śā·rîm;

of the princes –

､ וְנָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙

wə·nā·šam·mū

and shall be astonished ､

הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים

hak·kō·hă·nîm,

וְהַנְּבִיאִ֖ים

wə·han·nə·ḇî·’îm

and the prophets

. יִתְמָֽהוּ׃

yiṯ·mā·hū.

וָאֹמַ֞ר

wā·’ō·mar

And I said

､ אֲהָ֣הּ ׀

’ă·hāh

Ah ､

אֲדֹנָ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

! יְהוִ֗ה

Yah·weh

אָכֵן֩

’ā·ḵên

הַשֵּׁ֨א

haš·šê

הִשֵּׁ֜אתָ

hiš·šê·ṯā

You have deceived

לָעָ֤ם

lā·‘ām

הַזֶּה֙

haz·zeh

､ וְלִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם

wə·lî·rū·šā·lim

and Jerusalem ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

– שָׁל֖וֹם

šā·lō·wm

יִהְיֶ֣ה

yih·yeh

לָכֶ֑ם

lā·ḵem;

וְנָגְעָ֥ה

wə·nā·ḡə·‘āh

and Whereas reaches

חֶ֖רֶב

ḥe·reḇ

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

. הַנָּֽפֶשׁ׃

han·nā·p̄eš.

the heart .

בָּעֵ֣ת

bā·‘êṯ

הַהִ֗יא

ha·hî,

יֵאָמֵ֤ר

yê·’ā·mêr

it will be said

לָֽעָם־

lā·‘ām-

הַזֶּה֙

haz·zeh

､ וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם

wə·lî·rū·šā·lim,

and to Jerusalem ､

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

צַ֤ח

ṣaḥ

of dry

שְׁפָיִים֙

šə·p̄ā·yîm

the desolate heights

בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר

bam·miḏ·bār,

[blows] in the wilderness

דֶּ֖רֶךְ

de·reḵ

בַּת־

baṯ-

Toward the daughter

､ עַמִּ֑י

‘am·mî;

of My people ､

ל֥וֹא

lō·w

Not

､ לִזְר֖וֹת

liz·rō·wṯ

to fan ､

וְל֥וֹא

wə·lō·w

or

､ לְהָבַֽר׃

lə·hā·ḇar.

to cleanse ､

ר֧וּחַ

rū·aḥ

מָלֵ֛א

mā·lê

מֵאֵ֖לֶּה

mê·’êl·leh

יָ֣בוֹא

will come

לִ֑י

lî;

for Me

עַתָּ֕ה

‘at·tāh

גַּם־

gam-

אֲנִ֛י

’ă·nî

I

אֲדַבֵּ֥ר

’ă·ḏab·bêr

will speak

מִשְׁפָּטִ֖ים

miš·pā·ṭîm

. אוֹתָֽם׃

’ō·w·ṯām.

､ הִנֵּ֣ה ׀

hin·nêh

､ כַּעֲנָנִ֣ים

ka·‘ă·nā·nîm

like clouds ､

יַעֲלֶ֗ה

ya·‘ă·leh,

he shall come up

– וְכַסּוּפָה֙

wə·ḵas·sū·p̄āh

and like a whirlwind –

מַרְכְּבוֹתָ֔יו

mar·kə·ḇō·w·ṯāw,

קַלּ֥וּ

qal·lū

. מִנְּשָׁרִ֖ים

min·nə·šā·rîm

סוּסָ֑יו

sū·sāw;

א֥וֹי

’ō·w

לָ֖נוּ

lā·nū

to us

כִּ֥י

kî

. שֻׁדָּֽדְנוּ׃

šud·dā·ḏə·nū.

we are plundered .

כַּבְּסִ֨י

kab·bə·sî

､ מֵרָעָ֤ה

mê·rā·‘āh

from wickedness ､

לִבֵּךְ֙

lib·bêḵ

､ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם

yə·rū·šā·lim,

לְמַ֖עַן

lə·ma·‘an

. תִּוָּשֵׁ֑עִי

tiw·wā·šê·‘î;

you may be saved .

עַד־

תָּלִ֥ין

בְּקִרְבֵּ֖ךְ

bə·qir·bêḵ

מַחְשְׁב֥וֹת

maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ

. אוֹנֵֽךְ׃

מַגִּ֖יד

mag·gîḏ

מִדָּ֑ן

mid·dān;

וּמַשְׁמִ֥יעַ

. אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

הַזְכִּ֣ירוּ

haz·kî·rū

– לַגּוֹיִ֗ם

to the nations –

､ הִנֵּה֙

Yes ､

הַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ

haš·mî·‘ū

עַל־

‘al-

､ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם

yə·rū·šā·lim,

נֹצְרִ֥ים

nō·ṣə·rîm

[That] watchers

בָּאִ֖ים

bā·’îm

､ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

from a country ､

הַמֶּרְחָ֑ק

ham·mer·ḥāq;

וַֽיִּתְּנ֛וּ

way·yit·tə·nū

עַל־

‘al-

עָרֵ֥י

‘ā·rê

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

. קוֹלָֽם׃

qō·w·lām.

כְּשֹׁמְרֵ֣י

kə·šō·mə·rê

､ שָׂדַ֔י

of a field ､

הָי֥וּ

hā·yū

עָלֶ֖יהָ

‘ā·le·hā

– מִסָּבִ֑יב

mis·sā·ḇîḇ;

כִּי־

kî-

אֹתִ֥י

’ō·ṯî

מָרָ֖תָה

mā·rā·ṯāh

she has been rebellious

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

דַּרְכֵּךְ֙

dar·kêḵ

וּמַ֣עֲלָלַ֔יִךְ

ū·ma·‘ă·lā·la·yiḵ,

and your doings

עָשׂ֥וֹ

‘ā·śōw

אֵ֖לֶּה

לָ֑ךְ

this [is]

､ רָעָתֵךְ֙

your wickedness ､

is plundered –

הָאָ֑רֶץ

the land

פִּתְאֹם֙

piṯ·’ōm

､ שֻׁדְּד֣וּ

are plundered ､

אֹהָלַ֔י

’ō·hā·lay,

רֶ֖גַע

re·ḡa‘

. יְרִיעֹתָֽי׃

yə·rî·‘ō·ṯāy.

[And] my curtains .

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מָתַ֖י

mā·ṯay

אֶרְאֶה־

’er·’eh-

will I see

､ נֵּ֑ס

nês;

the standard ､

אֶשְׁמְעָ֖ה

’eš·mə·‘āh

[And] hear

ק֥וֹל

qō·wl

؟ שׁוֹפָֽר׃

šō·w·p̄ār.

of the trumpet ؟

[are] foolish ､

עַמִּ֗י

Me

they have known

､ בָּנִ֤ים

סְכָלִים֙

sə·ḵā·lîm

הֵ֔מָּה

וְלֹ֥א

and no

– נְבוֹנִ֖ים

nə·ḇō·w·nîm

have understanding –

הֵ֑מָּה

hêm·māh;

חֲכָמִ֥ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

הֵ֙מָּה֙

､ לְהָרַ֔ע

lə·hā·ra‘,

to do evil ､

וּלְהֵיטִ֖יב

ū·lə·hê·ṭîḇ

but to do good

לֹ֥א

no

. יָדָֽעוּ׃

yā·ḏā·‘ū.

they have knowledge .

רָאִ֙יתִי֙

rā·’î·ṯî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the earth ､

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

and indeed ､

､ תֹ֖הוּ

ṯō·hū

[it was] without form ､

– וָבֹ֑הוּ

wā·ḇō·hū;

and void –

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

､ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

the heavens ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and no

. אוֹרָֽם׃

’ō·w·rām.

they had] light .

רָאִ֙יתִי֙

rā·’î·ṯî

､ הֶֽהָרִ֔ים

he·hā·rîm,

the mountains ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֖ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

､ רֹעֲשִׁ֑ים

rō·‘ă·šîm;

they trembled ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

הַגְּבָע֖וֹת

hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ

. הִתְקַלְקָֽלוּ׃

hiṯ·qal·qā·lū.

moved back and forth .

､ רָאִ֕יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

I beheld ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֖ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

אֵ֣ין

’ên

､ הָאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

man ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

ע֥וֹף

‘ō·wp̄

הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

of the heavens

. נָדָֽדוּ׃

nā·ḏā·ḏū.

､ רָאִ֕יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

I beheld ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

הַכַּרְמֶ֖ל

hak·kar·mel

the fruitful land [was]

､ הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר

ham·miḏ·bār;

a wilderness ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

עָרָ֗יו

‘ā·rāw,

נִתְּצוּ֙

nit·tə·ṣū

were broken down

מִפְּנֵ֣י

mip·pə·nê

at the presence

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

of Yahweh ､

מִפְּנֵ֖י

mip·pə·nê

by

חֲר֥וֹן

ḥă·rō·wn

. אַפּֽוֹ׃

’ap·pōw.

､ אָמַ֣ר

says ､

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

– שְׁמָמָ֥ה

תִהְיֶ֖ה

כָּל־

kāl-

הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

the land

וְכָלָ֖ה

wə·ḵā·lāh

and yet a full end

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. אֶעֱשֶֽׂה׃

’e·‘ĕ·śeh.

I will make .

עַל־

‘al-

זֹאת֙

zōṯ

､ תֶּאֱבַ֣ל

te·’ĕ·ḇal

shall mourn ､

הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

､ וְקָדְר֥וּ

wə·qā·ḏə·rū

and be black ､

הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

מִמָּ֑עַל

mim·mā·‘al;

עַ֤ל

‘al

כִּי־

kî-

דִבַּ֙רְתִּי֙

ḏib·bar·tî

זַמֹּ֔תִי

zam·mō·ṯî,

I have purposed

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

､ נִחַ֖מְתִּי

ni·ḥam·tî

will relent ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

אָשׁ֥וּב

’ā·šūḇ

will I turn back

. מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

mim·men·nāh.

from it .

מִקּ֨וֹל

miq·qō·wl

פָּרָ֜שׁ

pā·rāš

of the horsemen

וְרֹ֣מֵה

wə·rō·mêh

and

– קֶ֗שֶׁת

qe·šeṯ,

בֹּרַ֙חַת֙

bō·ra·ḥaṯ

כָּל־

kāl-

הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city

בָּ֚אוּ

bā·’ū

､ בֶּעָבִ֔ים

be·‘ā·ḇîm,

into thickets ､

– וּבַכֵּפִ֖ים

ū·ḇak·kê·p̄îm

and on the rocks –

עָל֑וּ

‘ā·lū;

כָּל־

kāl-

הָעִ֣יר

hā·‘îr

､ עֲזוּבָ֔ה

‘ă·zū·ḇāh,

[shall be] forsaken ､

וְאֵין־

wə·’ên-

and not

יוֹשֵׁ֥ב

yō·wō·šêḇ

בָּהֵ֖ן

bā·hên

in it

. אִֽישׁ׃

’îš.

a man .

[ואתי]

wə·’at·tî

And you

(וְאַ֨תְּ)

wə·’at

and [when] you

､ שָׁד֜וּד

šā·ḏūḏ

[are] plundered ､

מַֽה־

mah-

؟ תַּעֲשִׂ֗י

ta·‘ă·śî,

will you do ؟

כִּֽי־

kî-

תִלְבְּשִׁ֨י

ṯil·bə·šî

you clothe yourself

､ שָׁנִ֜י

šā·nî

with crimson ､

כִּי־

kî-

תַעְדִּ֣י

ṯa‘·dî

you adorn [yourself]

עֲדִי־

‘ă·ḏî-

､ זָהָ֗ב

zā·hāḇ,

of gold ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

תִקְרְעִ֤י

ṯiq·rə·‘î

､ בַפּוּךְ֙

ḇap·pūḵ

with paint ､

עֵינַ֔יִךְ

‘ê·na·yiḵ,

לַשָּׁ֖וְא

laš·šāw

– תִּתְיַפִּ֑י

tiṯ·yap·pî;

you will make yourself fair –

מָאֲסוּ־

mā·’ă·sū-

בָ֥ךְ

ḇāḵ

עֹגְבִ֖ים

נַפְשֵׁ֥ךְ

nap̄·šêḵ

. יְבַקֵּֽשׁוּ׃

yə·ḇaq·qê·šū.

they will seek .

כִּי֩

ק֨וֹל

qō·wl

､ כְּחוֹלָ֜ה

kə·ḥō·w·lāh

as of a woman in labor ､

שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי

šā·ma‘·tî,

צָרָה֙

ṣā·rāh

､ כְּמַבְכִּירָ֔ה

kə·maḇ·kî·rāh,

as of her who brings forth her first child ､

ק֧וֹל

qō·wl

בַּת־

baṯ-

of the daughter

､ צִיּ֛וֹן

ṣî·yō·wn

of Zion ､

､ תִּתְיַפֵּ֖חַ

tiṯ·yap·pê·aḥ

bewailing herself ､

תְּפָרֵ֣שׂ

tə·p̄ā·rêś

､ כַּפֶּ֑יהָ

kap·pe·hā;

אֽוֹי־

’ō·w-

[saying] Woe [is]

! נָ֣א

nā

לִ֔י

lî,

me

כִּֽי־

kî-

עָיְפָ֥ה

‘ā·yə·p̄āh

נַפְשִׁ֖י

nap̄·šî

. לְהֹרְגִֽים׃

lə·hō·rə·ḡîm.

because of murderers .
