Job Acknowledges the Finality of Death

יְל֣וּד

אִשָּׁ֑ה

’iš·šāh;

קְצַ֥ר

qə·ṣar

is of few

､ יָ֝מִ֗ים

yā·mîm,

days ､

וּֽשְׂבַֽע־

ū·śə·ḇa‘-

and full

. רֹֽגֶז׃

rō·ḡez.

､ כְּצִ֣יץ

kə·ṣîṣ

Like a flower ､

יָ֭צָא

yā·ṣā

– וַיִּמָּ֑ל

way·yim·māl;

and fades away –

וַיִּבְרַ֥ח

way·yiḇ·raḥ

and He flees

､ כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל

kaṣ·ṣêl,

like a shadow ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

. יַעֲמֽוֹד׃

ya·‘ă·mō·wḏ.

does continue .

אַף־

’ap̄-

And

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ זֶ֭ה

zeh

this [one] ､

פָּקַ֣חְתָּ

pā·qaḥ·tā

and do You open

עֵינֶ֑ךָ

‘ê·ne·ḵā;

וְאֹ֘תִ֤י

wə·’ō·ṯî

and me

תָבִ֖יא

ṯā·ḇî

בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט

ḇə·miš·pāṭ

. עִמָּֽךְ׃

‘im·māḵ.

with Yourself .

מִֽי־

mî-

יִתֵּ֣ן

yit·tên

טָ֭הוֹר

ṭā·hō·wr

a clean [thing]

؟ מִטָּמֵ֗א

miṭ·ṭā·mê,

out of an unclean ؟

לֹ֣א

lō

. אֶחָֽד׃

’e·ḥāḏ.

אִ֥ם

’im

､ חֲרוּצִ֨ים ׀

ḥă·rū·ṣîm

[are] determined ､

יָמָ֗יו

yā·māw,

מִֽסְפַּר־

mis·par-

חֳדָשָׁ֥יו

ḥo·ḏā·šāw

אִתָּ֑ךְ

’it·tāḵ;

[is] with You

[חקו]

ḥuq·qōw

-

(חֻקָּ֥יו)

ḥuq·qāw

עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ

‘ā·śî·ṯā,

You have appointed

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

– יַעֲבֽוֹר׃

ya·‘ă·ḇō·wr.

he pass –

שְׁעֵ֣ה

šə·‘êh

מֵעָלָ֣יו

mê·‘ā·lāw

､ וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל

wə·yeḥ·dāl;

that he may rest ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

､ יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה

yir·ṣeh,

he finishes ､

､ כְּשָׂכִ֥יר

kə·śā·ḵîr

like a hired man ､

. יוֹמֽוֹ׃

yō·w·mōw.

כִּ֤י

kî

יֵ֥שׁ

yêš

､ לָעֵ֗ץ

lā·‘êṣ,

for a tree ､

תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה

tiq·wāh

אִֽם־

’im-

if

､ יִ֭כָּרֵת

yik·kā·rêṯ

it is cut down ､

､ וְע֣וֹד

wə·‘ō·wḏ

יַחֲלִ֑יף

ya·ḥă·lîp̄;

it will sprout

וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ

wə·yō·naq·tōw,

that its tender shoots

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תֶחְדָּֽל׃

ṯeḥ·dāl.

will cease .

אִם־

’im-

יַזְקִ֣ין

yaz·qîn

､ בָּאָ֣רֶץ

bā·’ā·reṣ

in the earth ､

שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ

šā·rə·šōw;

– וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר

ū·ḇe·‘ā·p̄ār,

and in the ground –

יָמ֥וּת

yā·mūṯ

. גִּזְעֽוֹ׃

giz·‘ōw.

מֵרֵ֣יחַ

mê·rê·aḥ

[Yet] at the scent

מַ֣יִם

ma·yim

､ יַפְרִ֑חַ

yap̄·ri·aḥ;

it will bud ､

וְעָשָׂ֖ה

wə·‘ā·śāh

and bring forth

קָצִ֣יר

qā·ṣîr

כְּמוֹ־

kə·mōw-

. נָֽטַע׃

nā·ṭa‘.

וְגֶ֣בֶר

wə·ḡe·ḇer

But man

､ יָ֭מוּת

yā·mūṯ

dies ､

– וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ

way·ye·ḥĕ·lāš;

and is laid away –

､ וַיִּגְוַ֖ע

way·yiḡ·wa‘

and indeed he breathes his last ､

אָדָ֣ם

’ā·ḏām

. וְאַיּֽוֹ׃

wə·’ay·yōw.

and where [is] he .

אָֽזְלוּ־

’ā·zə·lū-

מַ֭יִם

ma·yim

[As] water

מִנִּי־

min·nî-

､ יָ֑ם

yām;

the sea ､

וְ֝נָהָ֗ר

wə·nā·hār,

and a river

יֶחֱרַ֥ב

ye·ḥĕ·raḇ

becomes parched

– וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃

wə·yā·ḇêš.

and dries up –

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

so man

､ שָׁכַ֗ב

šā·ḵaḇ,

– וְֽלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not –

יָ֫ק֥וּם

yā·qūm

עַד־

‘aḏ-

､ בִּלְתִּ֣י

bil·tî

no more ､

שָׁ֭מַיִם

ma·yim

the heavens [are]

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ יָקִ֑יצוּ

yā·qî·ṣū;

they will awake ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ

yê·‘ō·rū,

. מִשְּׁנָתָֽם׃

miš·šə·nā·ṯām.

from their sleep .

מִ֤י

mî

יִתֵּ֨ן ׀

yit·tên

-

､ בִּשְׁא֬וֹל

biš·’ō·wl

in the grave ､

תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי

taṣ·pi·nê·nî,

You would hide me

､ תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי

tas·tî·rê·nî

that You would conceal me ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

､ שׁ֣וּב

šūḇ

is past ､

אַפֶּ֑ךָ

’ap·pe·ḵā;

תָּ֤שִׁ֥ית

tā·šîṯ

that You would appoint

לִ֖י

lî

me

､ חֹ֣ק

ḥōq

a set time ､

. וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי׃

wə·ṯiz·kə·rê·nî.

and remember me .

אִם־

’im-

If

､ יָמ֥וּת

yā·mūṯ

dies ､

גֶּ֗בֶר

ge·ḇer,

הֲיִ֫חְיֶ֥ה

hă·yiḥ·yeh

shall he live [again]

כָּל־

kāl-

יְמֵ֣י

yə·mê

the days

צְבָאִ֣י

ṣə·ḇā·’î

of my hard service

､ אֲיַחֵ֑ל

’ă·ya·ḥêl;

I will wait ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

בּ֝֗וֹא

bō·w,

. חֲלִיפָתִֽי׃

ḥă·lî·p̄ā·ṯî.

､ תִּ֭קְרָא

tiq·rā

You shall call ､

וְאָנֹכִ֣י

wə·’ā·nō·ḵî

and I

אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ

’e·‘ĕ·ne·kā;

will answer You

לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה

lə·ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

יָדֶ֣יךָ

yā·ḏe·ḵā

. תִכְסֹֽף׃

ṯiḵ·sōp̄.

You shall desire .

כִּֽי־

kî-

עַ֭תָּה

‘at·tāh

､ צְעָדַ֣י

ṣə·‘ā·ḏay

my steps ､

תִּסְפּ֑וֹר

tis·pō·wr;

לֹֽא־

lō-

but not

תִ֝שְׁמ֗וֹר

ṯiš·mō·wr,

עַל־

‘al-

؟ חַטָּאתִֽי׃

ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯî.

my sin ؟

חָתֻ֣ם

ḥā·ṯum

[is] sealed up

､ בִּצְר֣וֹר

biṣ·rō·wr

in a bag ､

פִּשְׁעִ֑י

piš·‘î;

My transgression

וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל

wat·tiṭ·pōl,

עַל־

‘al-

on

. עֲוֺנִֽי׃

‘ă·wō·nî.

וְ֭אוּלָם

wə·’ū·lām

But [as]

הַר־

har-

נוֹפֵ֣ל

nō·w·p̄êl

､ יִבּ֑וֹל

yib·bō·wl;

[and] crumbles away ､

וְ֝צ֗וּר

wə·ṣūr,

and [as] a rock

יֶעְתַּ֥ק

ye‘·taq

. מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃

mim·mə·qō·mōw.

from its place .

､ אֲבָנִ֤ים ׀

’ă·ḇā·nîm

שָׁ֥חֲקוּ

šā·ḥă·qū

מַ֗יִם

ma·yim,

[As] water

תִּשְׁטֹֽף־

tiš·ṭōp̄-

סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ

sə·p̄î·ḥe·hā

[And as] torrents

עֲפַר־

‘ă·p̄ar-

the soil

– אָ֑רֶץ

’ā·reṣ;

of the earth –

וְתִקְוַ֖ת

wə·ṯiq·waṯ

so the hope

אֱנ֣וֹשׁ

’ĕ·nō·wōš

of man

. הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ׃

he·’ĕ·ḇaḏ·tā.

תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ

tiṯ·qə·p̄ê·hū

You prevail against him

לָ֭נֶצַח

lā·ne·ṣaḥ

– וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ

way·ya·hă·lōḵ;

and he passes on –

מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה

mə·šan·neh

､ פָ֝נָ֗יו

p̄ā·nāw,

his countenance ､

. וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃

wat·tə·šal·lə·ḥê·hū.

and send him away .

､ יִכְבְּד֣וּ

yiḵ·bə·ḏū

Come to honor ､

בָ֭נָיו

ḇā·nāw

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not –

יֵדָ֑ע

yê·ḏā‘;

he does know [it]

､ וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ

wə·yiṣ·‘ă·rū,

and they are brought low ､

וְֽלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not

יָבִ֥ין

yā·ḇîn

he does perceive [it]

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

to .

אַךְ־

’aḵ-

But

בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ

bə·śā·rōw

עָלָ֣יו

‘ā·lāw

､ יִכְאָ֑ב

yiḵ·’āḇ;

will be in pain ､

וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ

wə·nap̄·šōw,

עָלָ֥יו

‘ā·lāw

. תֶּאֱבָֽל׃

te·’ĕ·ḇāl.

will mourn .
