Job Appeals from Men to God

רוּחִ֣י

rū·ḥî

､ חֻ֭בָּלָה

ḥub·bā·lāh

is broken ､

יָמַ֥י

yā·may

､ נִזְעָ֗כוּ

niz·‘ā·ḵū,

are extinguished ､

קְבָרִ֥ים

qə·ḇā·rîm

the grave [is ready]

. לִֽי׃

lî.

for me .

אִם־

’im-

לֹ֣א

lō

not

הֲ֭תֻלִים

hă·ṯu·lîm

עִמָּדִ֑י

‘im·mā·ḏî;

with me

؟ וּ֝בְהַמְּרוֹתָ֗ם

ū·ḇə·ham·mə·rō·w·ṯām,

and on their provocation ؟

תָּלַ֥ן

tā·lan

. עֵינִֽי׃

‘ê·nî.

my eye .

שִֽׂימָה־

śî·māh-

､ נָּ֭א

nā

now ､

עָרְבֵ֣נִי

‘ā·rə·ḇê·nî

a pledge for me

עִמָּ֑ךְ

‘im·māḵ;

מִֽי

mî

who [is]

ה֝֗וּא

hū,

he

לְיָדִ֥י

lə·yā·ḏî

hands with me

. יִתָּקֵֽעַ׃

yit·tā·qê·a‘.

[who] will shake .

כִּֽי־

kî-

לִ֭בָּם

lib·bām

צָפַ֣נְתָּ

ṣā·p̄an·tā

You have hidden

､ מִּשָּׂ֑כֶל

miś·śā·ḵel;

from understanding ､

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֝֗ן

kên,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תְרֹמֵֽם׃

ṯə·rō·mêm.

You will exalt [them] .

לְ֭חֵלֶק

lə·ḥê·leq

יַגִּ֣יד

yag·gîḏ

He who speaks to

､ רֵעִ֑ים

rê·‘îm;

[his] friends ､

וְעֵינֵ֖י

wə·‘ê·nê

and Even the eyes

בָנָ֣יו

ḇā·nāw

of his children

. תִּכְלֶֽנָה׃

tiḵ·le·nāh.

will fail .

וְֽ֭הִצִּגַנִי

wə·hiṣ·ṣi·ḡa·nî

But He has made me

לִמְשֹׁ֣ל

lim·šōl

– עַמִּ֑ים

‘am·mîm;

of the people –

וְתֹ֖פֶת

wə·ṯō·p̄eṯ

and [men] spit

לְפָנִ֣ים

lə·p̄ā·nîm

one in whose face

. אֶֽהְיֶֽה׃

’eh·yeh.

I have become .

וַתֵּ֣כַהּ

wat·tê·ḵah

And has grown dim

､ מִכַּ֣עַשׂ

mik·ka·‘aś

because of sorrow ､

עֵינִ֑י

‘ê·nî;

My eye

וִֽיצֻרַ֖י

wî·ṣu·ray

and my members [are]

כַּצֵּ֣ל

kaṣ·ṣêl

. כֻּלָּֽם׃

kul·lām.

יָשֹׁ֣מּוּ

yā·šōm·mū

יְשָׁרִ֣ים

yə·šā·rîm

עַל־

‘al-

at

､ זֹ֑את

zōṯ;

this ､

וְ֝נָקִ֗י

wə·nā·qî,

and the innocent

עַל־

‘al-

חָנֵ֥ף

ḥā·nêp̄

. יִתְעֹרָֽר׃

yiṯ·‘ō·rār.

stirs up himself .

וְיֹאחֵ֣ז

wə·yō·ḥêz

And yet will hold

צַדִּ֣יק

ṣad·dîq

､ דַּרְכּ֑וֹ

dar·kōw;

to his way ､

וּֽטֳהָר־

ū·ṭo·hār-

and he who has clean

יָ֝דַ֗יִם

yā·ḏa·yim,

יֹסִ֥יף

yō·sîp̄

will increase in

. אֹֽמֶץ׃

’ō·meṣ.

וְֽאוּלָ֗ם

wə·’ū·lām,

But

､ כֻּלָּ֣ם

kul·lām

all of you ､

､ תָּ֭שֻׁבוּ

tā·šu·ḇū

come back again ､

וּבֹ֣אוּ

ū·ḇō·’ū

and

､ נָ֑א

nā;

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

for not

אֶמְצָ֖א

’em·ṣā

בָכֶ֣ם

ḇā·ḵem

. חָכָֽם׃

ḥā·ḵām.

[one] wise [man] .

יָמַ֣י

yā·may

､ עָ֭בְרוּ

‘ā·ḇə·rū

זִמֹּתַ֣י

zim·mō·ṯay

､ נִתְּק֑וּ

nit·tə·qū;

are broken off ､

מ֖וֹרָשֵׁ֣י

mō·w·rā·šê

[Even] the thoughts

. לְבָבִֽי׃

lə·ḇā·ḇî.

of my heart .

לַ֭יְלָה

lay·lāh

､ לְי֣וֹם

lə·yō·wm

יָשִׂ֑ימוּ

yā·śî·mū;

א֝֗וֹר

’ō·wr,

the light [is]

קָר֥וֹב

qā·rō·wḇ

near [they say]

מִפְּנֵי־

mip·pə·nê-

in the face

. חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

ḥō·šeḵ.

אִם־

’im-

If

､ אֲ֭קַוֶּה

’ă·qaw·weh

I wait [for] ､

שְׁא֣וֹל

šə·’ō·wl

､ בֵּיתִ֑י

bê·ṯî;

[as] my house ､

בַּ֝חֹ֗שֶׁךְ

ba·ḥō·šeḵ,

in the darkness

רִפַּ֥דְתִּי

rip·paḏ·tî

if I make

. יְצוּעָֽי׃

yə·ṣū·‘āy.

my bed .

､ לַשַּׁ֣חַת

laš·ša·ḥaṯ

To corruption ､

קָ֭רָאתִי

qā·rā·ṯî

if I say

– אָ֣בִי

’ā·ḇî

my father –

אָ֑תָּה

’āt·tāh;

､ אִמִּ֥י

’im·mî

You [are] my mother ､

. וַ֝אֲחֹתִ֗י

wa·’ă·ḥō·ṯî,

and my sister .

､ לָֽרִמָּֽה׃

lā·rim·māh.

And to the worm ､

וְ֭אַיֵּה

wə·’ay·yêh

and where [is]

אֵפ֣וֹ

’ê·p̄ōw

؟ תִקְוָתִ֑י

ṯiq·wā·ṯî;

my hope ؟

､ וְ֝תִקְוָתִ֗י

wə·ṯiq·wā·ṯî,

and as for my hope ､

מִ֣י

mî

. יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה׃

yə·šū·ren·nāh.

can see it .

בַּדֵּ֣י

bad·dê

To the gates

､ שְׁאֹ֣ל

šə·’ōl

of Sheol ､

תֵּרַ֑דְנָה

tê·raḏ·nāh;

[Will] they go down

אִם־

’im-

יַ֖חַד

ya·ḥaḏ

עַל־

‘al-

in

עָפָ֣ר

‘ā·p̄ār

the dust

. נָֽחַת׃

nā·ḥaṯ.

shall [we have] rest .
