Bildad: God Punishes the Wicked

וַ֭יַּעַן
way·ya·‘an
בִּלְדַּ֥ד
bil·daḏ
､ הַשֻּׁחִ֗י
haš·šu·ḥî,
the Shuhite ､
､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃
way·yō·mar.
and said ､
2
עַד־
‘aḏ-
אָ֤נָה ׀
’ā·nāh
תְּשִׂימ֣וּן
tə·śî·mūn
קִנְצֵ֣י
qin·ṣê
an end
؟ לְמִלִּ֑ין
lə·mil·lîn;
to words ؟
､ תָּ֝בִ֗ינוּ
tā·ḇî·nū,
וְאַחַ֥ר
wə·’a·ḥar
. נְדַבֵּֽר׃
nə·ḏab·bêr.
we will speak .

מַ֭דּוּעַ
mad·dū·a‘
נֶחְשַׁ֣בְנוּ
neḥ·šaḇ·nū
､ כַבְּהֵמָ֑ה
ḵab·bə·hê·māh;
as beasts ､
נִ֝טְמִ֗ינוּ
niṭ·mî·nū,
[And] regarded as stupid
؟ בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃
bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem.
in your sight ؟

טֹֽרֵ֥ף
ṭō·rêp̄
נַפְשׁ֗וֹ
nap̄·šōw,
– בְּאַ֫פּ֥וֹ
bə·’ap·pōw
in anger –
הַ֭לְמַעַנְךָ
hal·ma·‘an·ḵā
תֵּעָ֣זַב
tê·‘ā·zaḇ
אָ֑רֶץ
’ā·reṣ;
the earth
וְיֶעְתַּק־
wə·ye‘·taq-
צ֝֗וּר
ṣūr,
the rock
؟ מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃
mim·mə·qō·mōw.

､ גַּ֤ם
gam
indeed ､
א֣וֹר
’ō·wr
the light
רְשָׁעִ֣ים
rə·šā·‘îm
of the wicked
､ יִדְעָ֑ךְ
yiḏ·‘āḵ;
goes out ､
וְלֹֽא־
wə·lō-
and not
יִ֝גַּ֗הּ
yig·gah,
שְׁבִ֣יב
šə·ḇîḇ
the flame
. אִשּֽׁוֹ׃
’iš·šōw.
of his fire .

א֭וֹר
’ō·wr
The light
חָשַׁ֣ךְ
ḥā·šaḵ
is dark
､ בְּאָהֳל֑וֹ
bə·’ā·ho·lōw;
in his tent ､
וְ֝נֵר֗וֹ
wə·nê·rōw,
and his lamp
עָלָ֥יו
‘ā·lāw
. יִדְעָֽךְ׃
yiḏ·‘āḵ.
is put out .

､ יֵֽ֭צְרוּ
yê·ṣə·rū
צַעֲדֵ֣י
ṣa·‘ă·ḏê
the steps of
אוֹנ֑וֹ
’ō·w·nōw;
וְֽתַשְׁלִיכֵ֥הוּ
wə·ṯaš·lî·ḵê·hū
. עֲצָתֽוֹ׃
‘ă·ṣā·ṯōw.

כִּֽי־
kî-
שֻׁלַּ֣ח
šul·laḥ
he is cast
בְּרֶ֣שֶׁת
bə·re·šeṯ
､ בְּרַגְלָ֑יו
bə·raḡ·lāw;
by his own feet ､
וְעַל־
wə·‘a·lś-
and into
שְׂ֝בָכָ֗ה
ḇā·ḵāh,
. יִתְהַלָּֽךְ׃
yiṯ·hal·lāḵ.
he walks .

יֹאחֵ֣ז
yō·ḥêz
､ בְּעָקֵ֣ב
bə·‘ā·qêḇ
by the heel ､
פָּ֑ח
pāḥ;
the net
יַחֲזֵ֖ק
ya·ḥă·zêq
[And] lays hold
עָלָ֣יו
‘ā·lāw
of him
. צַמִּֽים׃
ṣam·mîm.
a snare .

טָמ֣וּן
ṭā·mūn
､ בָּאָ֣רֶץ
bā·’ā·reṣ
on the ground ､
חַבְל֑וֹ
ḥaḇ·lōw;
וּ֝מַלְכֻּדְתּ֗וֹ
ū·mal·kuḏ·tōw,
and a trap for him
עֲלֵ֣י
‘ă·lê
in
. נָתִֽיב׃
nā·ṯîḇ.
the road .

､ סָ֭בִיב
sā·ḇîḇ
On every side ､
בִּֽעֲתֻ֣הוּ
bi·‘ă·ṯu·hū
בַלָּה֑וֹת
ḇal·lā·hō·wṯ;
וֶהֱפִיצֻ֥הוּ
we·hĕ·p̄î·ṣu·hū
. לְרַגְלָֽיו׃
lə·raḡ·lāw.
to his feet .

יְהִי־
yə·hî-
､ רָעֵ֥ב
rā·‘êḇ
אֹנ֑וֹ
’ō·nōw;
וְ֝אֵ֗יד
wə·’êḏ,
נָכ֥וֹן
nā·ḵō·wn
[is] ready
. לְצַלְעֽוֹ׃
lə·ṣal·‘ōw.
at his side .

יֹ֭אכַל
yō·ḵal
בַּדֵּ֣י
bad·dê
– עוֹר֑וֹ
‘ō·w·rōw;
of his skin –
יֹאכַ֥ל
yō·ḵal
בַּ֝דָּ֗יו
bad·dāw,
בְּכ֣וֹר
bə·ḵō·wr
. מָֽוֶת׃
mā·weṯ.
of death .

יִנָּתֵ֣ק
yin·nā·ṯêq
He is uprooted
､ מֵ֭אָהֳלוֹ
mê·’ā·ho·lōw
מִבְטַח֑וֹ
miḇ·ṭa·ḥōw;
וְ֝תַצְעִדֵ֗הוּ
wə·ṯaṣ·‘i·ḏê·hū,
לְמֶ֣לֶךְ
lə·me·leḵ
. בַּלָּהֽוֹת׃
bal·lā·hō·wṯ.
of terrors .

תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן
tiš·kō·wn
､ בְּ֭אָהֳלוֹ
bə·’ā·ho·lōw
in his tent ､
מִבְּלִי־
mib·bə·lî-
ל֑וֹ
lōw;
of his
יְזֹרֶ֖ה
yə·zō·reh
עַל־
‘al-
on
נָוֵ֣הוּ
nā·wê·hū
. גָפְרִֽית׃
ḡā·p̄ə·rîṯ.

､ מִ֭תַּחַת
mit·ta·ḥaṯ
Below ､
שָֽׁרָשָׁ֣יו
šā·rā·šāw
יִבָ֑שׁוּ
yi·ḇā·šū;
וּ֝מִמַּ֗עַל
ū·mim·ma·‘al,
and above
יִמַּ֥ל
yim·mal
. קְצִירֽוֹ׃
qə·ṣî·rōw.

זִֽכְרוֹ־
ziḵ·rōw-
The memory of him
אָ֭בַד
’ā·ḇaḏ
מִנִּי־
min·nî-
､ אָ֑רֶץ
’ā·reṣ;
the earth ､
וְלֹא־
wə·lō-
and no
שֵׁ֥ם
šêm
ל֝֗וֹ
lōw,
he has
עַל־
‘al-
in
פְּנֵי־
pə·nê-
. חֽוּץ׃
ḥūṣ.
the renowned .

יֶ֭הְדְּפֻהוּ
yeh·də·p̄u·hū
He is driven
מֵא֣וֹר
mê·’ō·wr
אֶל־
’el-
､ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ
ḥō·šeḵ;
וּֽמִתֵּבֵ֥ל
ū·mit·tê·ḇêl
and out of the world
. יְנִדֻּֽהוּ׃
yə·nid·du·hū.

. בִּמְגוּרָֽיו׃

אַחֲרֹנִ֑ים

Those in the west
וְ֝קַדְמֹנִ֗ים
wə·qaḏ·mō·nîm,
and as those in the east
אָ֣חֲזוּ
’ā·ḥă·zū
. שָֽׂעַר׃
śā·‘ar.

אַךְ־
’aḵ-
אֵ֭לֶּה
’êl·leh
מִשְׁכְּנ֣וֹת
miš·kə·nō·wṯ
､ עַוָּ֑ל
‘aw·wāl;
of the wicked ､
וְ֝זֶ֗ה
wə·zeh,
and this [is]
מְק֣וֹם
mə·qō·wm
the place [of]
לֹא־
lō-
not
יָדַֽע־
yā·ḏa‘-
. אֵֽל׃
’êl.
