Job: God will Deal with the Wicked

וַיַּ֥עַן

way·ya·‘an

אִיּ֗וֹב

’î·yō·wḇ,

､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

way·yō·mar.

and said ､

שִׁמְע֣וּ

šim·‘ū

שָׁ֭מוֹעַ

mō·w·a‘

､ מִלָּתִ֑י

mil·lā·ṯî;

to my speech ､

וּתְהִי־

ū·ṯə·hî-

and let be

זֹ֝֗את

zōṯ,

. תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃

tan·ḥū·mō·ṯê·ḵem.

your consolation .

שָׂ֭אוּנִי

’ū·nî

Bear with me

וְאָנֹכִ֣י

wə·’ā·nō·ḵî

– אֲדַבֵּ֑ר

’ă·ḏab·bêr;

וְאַחַ֖ר

wə·’a·ḥar

､ דַּבְּרִ֣י

dab·bə·rî

I have spoken ､

. תַלְעִֽיג׃

ṯal·‘îḡ.

､ הֶ֭אָנֹכִי

he·’ā·nō·ḵî

[is] as for me ､

؟ לְאָדָ֣ם

lə·’ā·ḏām

שִׂיחִ֑י

śî·ḥî;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if [it were]

מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘,

לֹא־

lō-

not

תִקְצַ֥ר

ṯiq·ṣar

should be impatient

؟ רוּחִֽי׃

rū·ḥî.

I ؟

פְּנוּ־

pə·nū-

אֵלַ֥י

’ê·lay

Look at me

､ וְהָשַׁ֑מּוּ

wə·hā·šam·mū;

and be astonished ､

וְשִׂ֖ימוּ

wə·śî·mū

and Put

יָ֣ד

yāḏ

עַל־

‘al-

. פֶּֽה׃

peh.

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

זָכַ֥רְתִּי

zā·ḵar·tî

､ וְנִבְהָ֑לְתִּי

wə·niḇ·hā·lə·tî;

and I am terrified ､

וְאָחַ֥ז

wə·’ā·ḥaz

בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י

bə·śā·rî,

of my flesh

. פַּלָּצֽוּת׃

pal·lā·ṣūṯ.

מַדּ֣וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

､ יִחְי֑וּ

yiḥ·yū;

do live ､

､ עָ֝תְק֗וּ

‘ā·ṯə·qū,

[and] become old ､

､ גַּם־

gam-

Yes ､

גָּ֥בְרוּ

gā·ḇə·rū

؟ חָֽיִל׃

ḥā·yil.

in power ؟

זַרְעָ֤ם

zar·‘ām

their descendants

נָכ֣וֹן

nā·ḵō·wn

are established

לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם

lip̄·nê·hem

עִמָּ֑ם

‘im·mām;

with them

וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם

wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’ê·hem,

and their offspring

. לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

lə·‘ê·nê·hem.

before their eyes .

בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם

bāt·tê·hem

Their houses [are]

שָׁל֣וֹם

šā·lō·wm

､ מִפָּ֑חַד

mip·pā·ḥaḏ;

וְלֹ֤א

wə·lō

שֵׁ֖בֶט

šê·ḇeṭ

[is] the rod

אֱל֣וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

of God

. עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

‘ă·lê·hem.

שׁוֹר֣וֹ

šō·w·rōw

､ עִ֭בַּר

‘ib·bar

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and without –

יַגְעִ֑ל

yaḡ·‘il;

､ תְּפַלֵּ֥ט

tə·p̄al·lêṭ

פָּ֝רָת֗וֹ

pā·rā·ṯōw,

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

. תְשַׁכֵּֽל׃

ṯə·šak·kêl.

יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ

yə·šal·lə·ḥū

They send forth

､ כַ֭צֹּאן

ḵaṣ·ṣōn

like a flock ､

עֲוִילֵיהֶ֑ם

‘ă·wî·lê·hem;

their little ones

וְ֝יַלְדֵיהֶ֗ם

wə·yal·ḏê·hem,

and their children

. יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃

yə·raq·qê·ḏūn.

יִ֭שְׂאוּ

yiś·’ū

כְּתֹ֣ף

kə·ṯōp̄

to the tambourine

､ וְכִנּ֑וֹר

wə·ḵin·nō·wr;

and harp ､

וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ

wə·yiś·mə·ḥū,

לְק֣וֹל

lə·qō·wl

to the sound

. עוּגָֽב׃

‘ū·ḡāḇ.

of the flute .

[יבלו]

yə·ḇal·lū

-

(יְכַלּ֣וּ)

yə·ḵal·lū

､ בַטּ֣וֹב

ḇaṭ·ṭō·wḇ

in wealth ､

יְמֵיהֶ֑ם

yə·mê·hem;

וּ֝בְרֶ֗גַע

ū·ḇə·re·ḡa‘,

and in a moment

שְׁא֣וֹל

šə·’ō·wl

to the grave

. יֵחָֽתּוּ׃

yê·ḥāt·tū.

go down .

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

And yet they say

､ לָ֭אֵל

lā·’êl

to God ､

ס֣וּר

sūr

מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

mim·men·nū;

וְדַ֥עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ

for the knowledge

דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ

də·rā·ḵe·ḵā,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. חָפָֽצְנוּ׃

ḥā·p̄ā·ṣə·nū.

we do desire .

מַה־

mah-

What [is]

､ שַׁדַּ֥י

šad·day

the Almighty ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

נַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ

na·‘aḇ·ḏen·nū;

we should serve Him

וּמַה־

ū·mah-

and what

נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל

nō·w·‘îl,

profit do we have

כִּ֣י

kî

if

נִפְגַּע־

nip̄·ga‘-

. בּֽוֹ׃

bōw.

to Him .

､ הֵ֤ן

hên

לֹ֣א

lō

not

– בְיָדָ֣ם

ḇə·yā·ḏām

in their hand –

טוּבָ֑ם

ṭū·ḇām;

their prosperity [is]

עֲצַ֥ת

‘ă·ṣaṯ

רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים

rə·šā·‘îm,

of the wicked

רָ֣חֲקָה

rā·ḥă·qāh

is far

. מֶֽנִּי׃

men·nî.

from me .

כַּמָּ֤ה ׀

kam·māh

נֵר־

nêr-

is the lamp

רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

! יִדְעָ֗ךְ

yiḏ·‘āḵ,

וְיָבֹ֣א

wə·yā·ḇō

and [How often] does come

עָלֵ֣ימוֹ

‘ā·lê·mōw

אֵידָ֑ם

’ê·ḏām;

their destruction

חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים

ḥă·ḇā·lîm,

יְחַלֵּ֥ק

yə·ḥal·lêq

[God] distributes

. בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃

bə·’ap·pōw.

יִהְי֗וּ

yih·yū,

כְּתֶ֥בֶן

kə·ṯe·ḇen

לִפְנֵי־

lip̄·nê-

､ ר֑וּחַ

rū·aḥ;

the wind ､

וּ֝כְמֹ֗ץ

ū·ḵə·mōṣ,

גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ

gə·nā·ḇat·tū

that carries away

. סוּפָֽה׃

sū·p̄āh.

אֱל֗וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah,

יִצְפֹּן־

yiṣ·pōn-

– לְבָנָ֥יו

lə·ḇā·nāw

for his children –

אוֹנ֑וֹ

’ō·w·nōw;

יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם

yə·šal·lêm

let Him recompense

אֵלָ֣יו

’ê·lāw

. וְיֵדָֽע׃

wə·yê·ḏā‘.

that he may know [it] .

יִרְא֣וּ

yir·’ū

[עינו]

‘ê·nōw

-

(עֵינָ֣יו)

‘ê·nāw

､ כִּיד֑וֹ

kî·ḏōw;

his destruction ､

וּמֵחֲמַ֖ת

ū·mê·ḥă·maṯ

and of the wrath

שַׁדַּ֣י

šad·day

of the Almighty

. יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃

yiš·teh.

let him drink .

כִּ֤י

kî

מַה־

mah-

חֶפְצ֣וֹ

ḥep̄·ṣōw

בְּבֵית֣וֹ

bə·ḇê·ṯōw

about his household

אַחֲרָ֑יו

’a·ḥă·rāw;

וּמִסְפַּ֖ר

ū·mis·par

and when the number

חֳדָשָׁ֣יו

ḥo·ḏā·šāw

؟ חֻצָּֽצוּ׃

ḥuṣ·ṣā·ṣū.

is cut in half ؟

הַלְאֵ֥ל

יְלַמֶּד־

yə·lam·meḏ-

؟ דָּ֑עַת

dā·‘aṯ;

וְ֝ה֗וּא

wə·hū,

רָמִ֥ים

rā·mîm

. יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃

yiš·pō·wṭ.

זֶ֗ה

zeh,

This [on]

יָ֭מוּת

yā·mūṯ

､ בְּעֶ֣צֶם

bə·‘e·ṣem

in strength ､

תֻּמּ֑וֹ

tum·mōw;

כֻּ֝לּ֗וֹ

kul·lōw,

שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן

šal·’ă·nan

. וְשָׁלֵֽיו׃

wə·šā·lêw.

and secure .

עֲ֭טִינָיו

‘ă·ṭî·nāw

מָלְא֣וּ

mā·lə·’ū

､ חָלָ֑ב

ḥā·lāḇ;

of milk ､

וּמֹ֖חַ

ū·mō·aḥ

and the marrow

עַצְמוֹתָ֣יו

‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāw

. יְשֻׁקֶּֽה׃

yə·šuq·qeh.

is moist .

וְזֶ֗ה

wə·zeh,

And this [one]

יָ֭מוּת

yā·mūṯ

､ בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ

bə·ne·p̄eš

of his soul ､

מָרָ֑ה

mā·rāh;

in the bitterness

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

אָ֝כַ֗ל

’ā·ḵal,

. בַּטּוֹבָֽה׃

baṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh.

with pleasure .

יַ֭חַד

ya·ḥaḏ

עַל־

‘al-

in

､ עָפָ֣ר

‘ā·p̄ār

the dust ､

יִשְׁכָּ֑בוּ

yiš·kā·ḇū;

וְ֝רִמָּ֗ה

wə·rim·māh,

תְּכַסֶּ֥ה

tə·ḵas·seh

. עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

‘ă·lê·hem.

､ הֵ֣ן

hên

Look ､

יָ֭דַעְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî

､ מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם

maḥ·šə·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem;

your thoughts ､

וּ֝מְזִמּ֗וֹת

ū·mə·zim·mō·wṯ,

and the schemes [with which]

עָלַ֥י

‘ā·lay

me

. תַּחְמֹֽסוּ׃

taḥ·mō·sū.

you would wrong .

כִּ֤י

kî

､ תֹֽאמְר֗וּ

ṯō·mə·rū,

אַיֵּ֥ה

’ay·yêh

where [is]

בֵית־

ḇêṯ-

the house of

؟ נָדִ֑יב

nā·ḏîḇ;

the prince ؟

וְ֝אַיֵּ֗ה

wə·’ay·yêh,

and where [is]

אֹ֤הֶל ׀

’ō·hel

the tent

מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת

miš·kə·nō·wṯ

the dwelling place of

؟ רְשָׁעִֽים׃

rə·šā·‘îm.

the wicked ؟

הֲלֹ֣א

hă·lō

have not

שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם

’el·tem

ע֣וֹבְרֵי

‘ō·wḇ·rê

those who travel

؟ דָ֑רֶךְ

ḏā·reḵ;

the road ؟

､ וְ֝אֹתֹתָ֗ם

wə·’ō·ṯō·ṯām,

and their signs ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תְנַכֵּֽרוּ׃

ṯə·nak·kê·rū.

כִּ֤י

kî

לְי֣וֹם

lə·yō·wm

the day

؟ אֵ֭יד

’êḏ

of doom ؟

יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ

yê·ḥā·śeḵ

are reserved for

רָ֑ע

rā‘;

לְי֖וֹם

lə·yō·wm

on the day

עֲבָר֣וֹת

‘ă·ḇā·rō·wṯ

. יוּבָֽלוּ׃

yū·ḇā·lū.

they shall be brought out .

מִֽי־

יַגִּ֣יד

to

؟ פָּנָ֣יו

דַּרְכּ֑וֹ

and he

[for what] has done ؟

And yet he

､ לִקְבָר֣וֹת

liq·ḇā·rō·wṯ

to the grave ､

יוּבָ֑ל

shall be brought

וְֽעַל־

wə·‘al-

and over

גָּדִ֥ישׁ

gā·ḏîš

the tomb

. יִשְׁקֽוֹד׃

yiš·qō·wḏ.

מָֽתְקוּ־

mā·ṯə·qū-

ל֗וֹ

lōw,

to him

רִגְבֵ֫י

riḡ·ḇê

נָ֥חַל

nā·ḥal

of the valley

וְ֭אַחֲרָיו

wə·’a·ḥă·rāw

and him

כָּל־

kāl-

אָדָ֣ם

’ā·ḏām

יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ

yim·šō·wḵ;

וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו

ū·lə·p̄ā·nāw,

and as before him

אֵ֣ין

’ên

. מִסְפָּֽר׃

mis·pār.

countless [have gone] .

וְ֭אֵיךְ

wə·’êḵ

תְּנַחֲמ֣וּנִי

tə·na·ḥă·mū·nî

can you comfort me

､ הָ֑בֶל

hā·ḇel;

with empty words ､

וּ֝תְשֽׁוּבֹתֵיכֶ֗ם

ū·ṯə·šū·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem,

since in your answers
